Am I undervaluing eye gouge? Seems like such a small value for a card. So I wouldn't sweat running brute because gouge is in the pack, hell I'd be happy that my opponent was running such a mediocre card in hopes that stars align and he gets my cyclops.

Despite that brutal cyclops, I was first drawn to returned, that turn 4 bestow can turn the game in your favor quick.

I think the blue promo is deceptively worse than it looks, you have to attack with it, have it survive, then next turn it will probably generate card advantage, but there is a chance of a miss there. But it is only 6 mana and the 5 toughness is really good.

The white promo is very likely to give you card advantage, as there will be stuff in your yard by turn 7+ but the 1 more mana cost is a big deal.

The red looks the best to me, but it is very killable at 4 toughness, right in range of several common Theros kill spells. I also want Mogis and Xenagos more than the other gods.

Black has the best art and green is really buff Frown I might be undecided until game time, but I'm leaning red I think for now.

As far as sets go, I'm definitely pretty disappointed.
And no, I *don't* need to wait on that.

See this is an opinion I can read without getting frustrated, it's clearly an opinion, doesn't make sweeping generalizations about the playablility of cards compared to other formats.

How can you say that this set is bad in standard, when before long it will be roughly 1/4 of that format? Then after that, standard will be dramatically different.

It is a weird set, I can see why people are disappointed. It will take me time to get used to a lot of my rares being mediocre, which is how most of them look to me. But, a lot of the uncommons are crazy cool, the mythics look good and I love the artistic styling of this set, it is epic.

Alright, BUG limited deck here I come. Grin unstoppable.

I agree that such an awesome name maybe shouldn't have been printed on a limited card. But really any removal that's not Heros downfall quality is basically limited fodder anyway, and they have to call them something.

Theros is the Aura matters block anyway, limited removal has to be jank or the limited games will suck.

Also, Please quit complaining about limited cards like they were made for anything else. I mean seriously, if they made a 4/4 for 5 vanilla, it would so clearly be a role player for limited that anyone who complained about it would look like an idiot. Slap on tribute for gain 4 or +3/+3, sheesh what a bad card right? To me you still look silly.

I'm digging tribute, because it's a skill tester, both in game and in deckbuilding. Some tribute cards are better than others, if you disregard them all, your deck will suffer. Yeah, your opponent can always choose the worst option for you, but in a limited game sometime it's not always clear what that is. People make mistakes and that is what separates good players. Are you a good player? Then don't sweat the mechanic, it will work out well for you on either side of the field. For new players it can create tense moments where they have to decide the way the game will play out and it will be fun. You guys remember the fun side of this game right? ( You chose poorly, muhahahaha)

I wish I could sustain myself on nerd tears as well as some other people can, to me all this complaining is kind of irritating. It just seems like a lot of self centered nerds not seeing the set, and a lot of the cards in it, for what they are. It's very limited and flavor focused, it also Wizards taking a step back from power creep, because that is important for game design longevity. They are making up for lower power, by increasing the awesome factor of the cards, because the power decrease is important, but so are sales.

The set is fairly low powered, but that is relative to the cards in the pool. I remember when hellrider got spoiled, many standard focused players saying "meh" because hero of oxid ridge was clearly better. Yes it was, but once Mirridon 2.0 rotated out, guess who was the top dog in red aggro? The point being, that these cards seem "lame" now, but given time they might prove to be hidden gems, especially if standard slows down, like its looking to, after RtR rotates out.

I will also be dissappointed if there are no regular global enchants, but I won't be surprised if we don't see any until Nyx. That set should have the strongest enchant theme, hopefully a bit less of the all critters all the time subtheme they have been doing.

Are you guys in denial about auras being enchantments or something? There is an undeniably strong aura theme going on in this block, including synergistic aura support from heroic cards, do these not count because they were not the enchantment style you were hoping for? Theros even had 10 incredible global enchantment cards in the gods and their weapons, and they are well represented in the tournament scene.

I keep seeing this argument that some cards could easily be printed as non enchant and be the same card. Would you really be okay with an normal artifact giving an anthem effect or lifelink to all your creatures? Or these new global enchant creatures, can you not see what wizard is doing there? Would Fate Unraveler be better to you if it's flavor text was "This card is the creature version of underworld dreams " because its clear to me why it's an enchantment.

I can't justify enchantment critter tokens, but I like the art direction of them, I like that enchant destruction with heavily go up in value in limited and I'm confident that cards will be printed in this block that care about your enchantment count.
How many cards cared about enchantments in theros not counting prot. or destruction?
0? Now in BnG there is already 2 with only 1/3 of the set being relevealed. Seems like that number will go up in time, with enchantress effects being most likely in Jou.

I understand that there is less pure enchantment synergy than you would have liked, and while that is a valid complaint, trying to make the argument that this isn't an enchantment block, when you've seen less than half the block, seems shortsighted to me.

Theros is an aura focused set with extremely powerful enchantments that have dramatically shifted the metagame. BnG is looking to keep up that theme, but with even more enchantment cards and support. This is an enchantment block, just not what you were hoping for I guess.

There is such a wealth of awesome stories and worlds within mtg that there is a lot of cool movie opportunities here. I really want them to make this a good movie and to leave people wanting more.

The story I'm most interested is Urza vs The phyrexians, but I hope they do a prequel to address that story. The most important thing for this first movie, in my opinion, is that they bring Karn into the story, and make him a badass.

Yeah, I like her. I think she is mostly sideboard material against control decks, but that's great news for the midrange decks she fits into. Also, damn she is beautiful, I can't wait to show this card to my girlfriend.

But on the other hand, there has been no confirmation or suggestion by Wizards that Slivers would remain in all 5 colors,

Except... that indication from Aaron Forsythe, which you would have seen if you looked back 1-2 pages before posting.

As far as I know, there is room in the core set for a gold sliver,I am excited about seeing a sliver lord with the new design scheme, I find myself liking it more and more.

Hmm, kinda surprised to see negative feedback... oh wait, people always complain.

Me, I'm stoked about the set, it's like a 'best of' set for modern, and I want these cards. I'm glad that the demand is high enough that MM2 will happen. I don't want to pay higher than 8 a pack, hopefully my LGS can hook me up.

I can't help but feel like the target audience for this set. I used to collect magic when I was younger, I didn't have the strongest collection, but some. After a long break, I got into INN, loved it and RtR. I'm looking forward to Theros, so when Innistrad rotates, because I will hopefully have some decent amount of MM, I will be interested in building modern decks.

I voted for creature, then land, and red enchant. I wanted consuming contract the most out of top 8, but oh well. I'm not bitter at all, I just want the mana cost of this thing to be low enough to be playable. I think it might be useable at 2 mana, and at 1 it would be awesome.

It needs a new name really bad though, how is it revenge? Ha! I made you discard a creature, now I get a zombie, suffer my revenge!!! I also don't think of discard spells as a necromancer's thing.

I didn't like Revenge of Necromany as I'm primarily a limited and standard player. This card needs a lot of support to be good. I hope that in the set they put this card into, they make some common discard spells. It would also play with well with thoughseize. Smile

Anyway, I played EDH for the first time tonight with daily mtg writer Mike Cannon and a few guys.
I borrowed a monoblack EDH deck from one of the players i'd just met. I had asked him for a deck that played with the gy, he gave me Balthor the defiled, I didn't know the deck at all, but it was loaded with great cards. I sat back comfortably on a weenie and a gravepact, while my mana built up and i got some board presence. I cast a diabolic tutor and found a leyline of the void. Everyone was playing a black or red deck, there was also a Mimeoplasm, so I knew the disparity of the leyline would be good. The player to my right cast a game changing sepuchral primordial chained into another one from another players gy, he had a monsterous field. On my turn I cast the leyline, then a boardwipe, rocking the game into my favor. On my next turn I summoned my general with mana open to pop my gy into play. EDH is a nuts format. Many deaths and mass ressurections later I stood on the mound of my enemies corpses, I mean, it was gg.
Edit: also we tried the game with the new legend rule. I thought it was good, as the guy playing Mimeoplasm was able to clone Mike's Kiki Jiki
, it made for fun shenanigans.

Long story short, I had a great time, and won the game.
Revenge looks like it would be great in an EDH deck built with a discard focus. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Well I'm pretty excited about this. I wasn't all that excited about the black enchantment, but these cards have put me in the mood.

I chose the Consuming Contract. I like that we can zoom in on that last ability to adjust it's power level. If it's strong enough I think it would make for a fun card to build around. I like the idea of this costing BBB or BBBB, all in baby.

Second would probably be Eldritch Rites. Seems good, I like it at 3BB , but maybe I'm underestimating it.
