My name is Chris Eustice and I’m trying to raise attention for my cause to buy my friend, Larry’s, Comic Book Store. (Galaxy Comics Located in Wichita Falls, Texas). I plan to turn the existing store into the premier gaming, comics, and toy store of Wichita Falls and the surrounding area using great existing inventory and an unrivaled customer service. This is my dream job.
A few years ago my life got turned upside down as mounting health problems caused me to get fired from my job, but I could not sit and feel sorry for myself. I have wanted to own a Comic Book Store ever since I was 8 years old and I had to ride 2 different buses across town to get to this same shop that I am now looking at buying.
I have spent 25 years as a customer at this very store. I started as a collector of Marvel Comics trading cards then a player of Magic the gathering. I play miniatures as well now. My wife loves getting as many people as she can to play board games. It can be as simple as Candy Land, as long as she gets to play. I love running tournaments for all of the games. Especially Legacy tournaments, I have spent the last 4 years rigorously building the Legacy community here, with great results, might I say. Several I've helped produce a couple SCG top 16 players, and even a top 4 placing.
I have really gotten into the comics as well. My favorite is Batman comics. I read every series I can get ahold of, and I love it.
I have been working/ volunteering in the store for years now and I feel I have got the ins and outs of the business. I have a deep passion for the store, and I would really love to exemplify the great things about the store and improve what things need more attention. I read magazines, blogs, articles, taken some business management courses, etc. on running this kind of business. I spend my time laying in bed at night thinking about improvements I would make to the business. Below I've listed My Facebook page for my store start up, the current store. If you have it in you, stop by the page; LIKE, SHARE, COMMENT.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Every LIKE is important, every SHARE means potentially hundreds of new people seeing helping me achieve my dreams, and gets me excited about my next step in becoming a premier gaming store.
Which Legacy Staples can you just not have to much of?
For me I never turn down any chance to pick up anything but the ones I have large numbers of are
Fetches 122
FoW 24
Wasteland 36
I have sleeved with sideboards ready to go moving no cards around:
Maverick
New Combo Elves
Esper Blade
UWr Miracle Control with Helm
Jund
BUG Delver
RUG Delver
Death and Taxes
MUD
Merfolk
Sneak & Show
So I think I lean toward the un-banning of Goblin Recruiter it could make a tier 1.5 or tier 2 deck into a tier 1 combo deck with a tier 1.5 aggro plan seems interesting.
A second card I'm looking at is Mind Twist I honestly just don't care about it, and don't think it would have any impact at all on any main stream decks.
Third is Gush this card is insanely good and it could add some new spice to the format may be to much but worth seeing.
The fourth card came to mind a few months ago is Library of Alexandria I wasn't sure then if it would get played in any decks that already existed or if it would spawn new decks or would everyone just shove it into everything. My hopes where that it would help spawn some "real" control decks which would be cool, but in all honesty now aggro needs the biggest helping hand.
Im looking to get into competitive legacy and i'm very interested in playing high tide. Mainly due to the fact that I happen to have force of wills and am a fan of combo and control decks. The problem is im really not willing to drop 600+ dollars on candelabras. Would running cloud of faeries in their place hurt the deck that much?
Thanks,
There is a version of the deck called Spiral Tide which is nearly as good and does't run Candles look on TCdecks for this variation its been successful also.
I think it would be worth noting what a "Staple" is versus common cards.
Where something like Tarmogoyf is a staple, found in multiple decks, one of the most played cards, and has an established place.
Whereas things like Animate Dead. Is a good card, found in one deck. Albeit that deck is common, i wouldn't consider it a Staple as much as a playable. As that deck plays Brainstorm, Force of WIll etc, which are found in many other decks, staples.
If i were to look at a list of collectible "Staples" i would be looking for the Common cards found in many decks, such that owning those puts you in relatively short reach of completing a multitude of decks and opening up the format.
I think with lists like this, that too much information can be too hard to digest and would try to limit to things like goyf/FoW/Fetches/LED/Brainstorm/etc... For those that don't know the format or looking to get into it. A smaller list will be more useful, easier to read, and easier to use.
Just my opinion.
And thank you very much for your input. I actually understand where you are coming from with the shorter is better idea, but this is more a look at the pool from a distance list. I do have hopes to have a "*" grading system in soon and, I think that would like a lot because you will be able to tell at a glance how playable or heavily played the cards are.
Here is what I did which has no amassed me a very sizable legacy collection. First I did a of research on decks to find the "one". For me the one was D&T at the time I didn't know anything about legacy nor had I even played a single game. I just started ordering the singles from online retailers. Note the "one" does't have to be the best deck, the most expensive deck, just something you will enjoying playing, because player skill can make the BIGGEST difference in this format.
Second you have to keep grinding those boring FNMs because the give you fuel to trade or sell. I went through my massive collection of what I considered "garbage" on sever occasions and sold stuff for store credit. Sell all your rares you don't, and can't trade to and online retailer for store credit. This part was a lot of work I printed off a copy of the buy list for every single common and un-common that they buy for 10 cents or more, collect more store credit and buy more cards. Don't sell your cards though before an big event like a Open in your area you will be surprised what some people will want and what they will give you. Exp. Vengvines for Tarmogoyfs.
Agreed some of the cards on the lower or lowest echelon of playable cards. Harpy being played in Aluren Combo, and Terravore in Aggro Loam list on occasion.
So I've been looking around online and all the lists of staples I've found are out of date. So I've been working on a more up to date list. I'm thinking about doing a star system to rate the cards: one * being niche to five *'s being heavily played/ playable. If you can think of anything I've missed please let me know.
