B&J Chunky Monkey is definitely in my top 5 favorites, and it's probably my favorite among commercially available flavors. When it comes to local stuff, Toscanini's makes a Mexican Chocolate (basically chocolate with cinnamon and cayenne pepper added) that I'm wild about.
I love chocolate shakes. I don't care what brand as long as they are real ice cream, not the fake crap you get at places like McDonnalds. Sadly though I'm lactose intolerant and they tare up my stomach so I only have about 2 or 3 a year. It makes me sad all day
@sirpsychosexy: breyer's and other companies make lactaid ice-cream you know. And lactaid milk is everywhere as wl (unlike taking the lactaid pill, which is often a bit chancy... the lactaid milk & ice cream are about completely lactose free).
Make your own milk shake. Drink TEN of them on me.
You probably won't recognise the local and international (by which I mean ones not available in the United States of America) brands.
I don't really know Haagen-Dazs well but I don't like it.
Ben & Jerry's wasn't a big thing here and it's damn dear; my main gripes about it is that it's overrated and under-accessible.
I prefer ice cream textually thick (heat-resistant or able to maintain its integrity under temperature) and not like yoghurt. I also abhor too-too-sweet ice creams. I've developed a sort of elitist connoisseurship for fine ice creams and I don't eat it unless it's any good.
Do you use a generic scooper or something sleek and stylish?
A stainless steel spoon.
The only thing sleek and stylish is, if I'm feeling s****, I sleekly and stylishly eat it from the tub, which often leads to a tubby tummy and rear.
Honestly, nothing beats a good Mc'D's ice cream cone. I'll hit them up before Dairy Queen or Ben and Jerry's every time.
I have an affection for soft serve too. AKA semi-frozen whipped sugar milk product.
Dad used to give me a $10 for a haircut and I would always walk over to the local walk up beach place for a cone with the change.
I like them chocolate dipped too, so in a pinch Kondikes.
Regarding scoop ice cream I like a nice thick Double Chocolate, or even Dark Chocolate if I can get it usually with Nuts. Ice Cream with almonds is really good, but I'm not really into ice cream that is posing as other food (aka cake flavored Ice Cream).

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

I usually can't stand soft serve, but damn a Dairy Queen dipped cone is like a little slice of heaven.
Just be happy you don't live in MN... Many of our non-Braizer DQs are closed for winter. ;_;
Or just closed permanently.
On the plus side, if you live in MN come January you can just get an old automatic mixer and set it up outside with some snow and cream and make your own ice cream, mixing as it freezes. Government regulations be damned, if you want to add half Milky Way/ half Bacon you can!
The best common store-bought ice cream I have had is Haagen-Dazs sweet chai latte ice cream, but the flavor has been removed from shelves since (it was limited edition). My "normal" pick is Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch. Coldstone Creamery had a cinnamon that was good too.
At this point I don't eat nearly as much ice cream as I used to and I stick to premium stuff that you can only get in select stores or online. There's also a local dairy brand I think is amazing: Oscar's Creamery. Around Detroit the best is Calder's dairy, and around Flint there was Uncle Ray's Dairyland. Locally there is also Gravitas, which has a whiskey ice cream that's amazing but only made sometimes.
Hagen-daaz is the only kind of ice cream I would deliberately buy at my local grocery store. Their "five" line is so much better than any of the alternatives it doesn't make sense. So of course, they stopped carrying that in my area.
When I'm in a city with a whole foods, the ice cream is one of many sections I peruse. Some of the more memorable ones included creme fraiche, dutch chocolate made with goats milk, and green tea made with coconut milk.
Making your own is fun, but I haven't had resounding success at it (yet).

Full agreement here, great flavour and texture. There are a couple other local brands that can work, but Haagen-Dazs is good stuff. And I very much dislike Ben & Jerry's for having "things" in my ice cream. Why would I want that? On maybe, but in?

Making your own is excellent times! Just made some lychee black tea ice cream, and goat cheese a couple weeks before. Super tasty.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
For soft serve I'm a sucker for DQ triple chocolate blizzards.
And for stuff in the convenience store, I'll usually seek out Ben & Jerrys, usually Peanut Butter Tracks, If I Had A Million Flavours and New York Super Chunk Fudge.
I also like gelato a lot, frozen custards, sorbets, granita, and I do like Hawaiian (or Thai) shaved ice/ice cream as long as it's not overloaded with junk.

Ha! That's exactly what my wife says about ice cream.
I buy Schwann ice cream from the local delivery truck. Most of the time I get vanilla (it's customizable ;)), but as far as favorite varieties go I really like Cookies and Cream as well as Rocky Road. When it's time to dish up the frozen confection I use a special scooper made of space age metal that slightly melts the ice cream as it digs.
When I'm on the go, I prefer milkshakes over cones or sundaes. I've found that Chick-Fil-A has the tastiest shakes; they're hand-spun and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. They even have a Cookies and Cream variety of the shake :).
I only eat it once a year when I go all out making food around Christmas time. I actually made my own type of Ice Cream called "Springbok Ice Cream" Which is named after our national rugby team.
It is ice cream flavoured with Amarula and pepermint liqueur. That gives it the green and gold effect just like our national colours.

What are/is your favorite brands and flavors. Do you use a generic scooper or something sleek and stylish?
I realize that this will vary by location as some brands are "local".
I enjoy the Blue Bunny brand, current favorites are Bordeaux Cherry Chocolate, Red Carpet Red Velvet Cake, and Peanut Butter Panic.
Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey, because it's literally the only banana flavored Ice Cream I can find.
As for a Ice Cream Scoop, I found one years ago at Target that is a solid 1-piece that is shaped like a Whale, it's sturdy and takes some serious abuse. Found a link. http://www.target.com/p/Animal-House-Whale-Ice-Cream-Spade/-/A-10668992

I have a cheapo little ice cream scoop, but usually I just end up using a regular spoon which I then use to eat the ice cream. Fewer dishes to do.

Everyone seems to buy single serve ice cream and just use a spoon (or so it seems like)
