Looking at SCG deck list cause it peaked my interest, but no Modern Decks showed up that actually ran this card. But it would be nice to have a new one foiled.
I'm actually not a fan of the new City of Brass art. The CG is like something out of the Star Wars prequels. It doesn't have the same fantasy feel the old ones did.
... no Modern Decks showed up that actually ran this card.
Get ready to hear/say this a lot. I've got a feel that we'll see Modern Masters: Our motto is, "Try not to print anything useful, and if you do print something useful, try not to print too much of it."
Also, the art...yeah...uh, can we go back to doing hand drawn art instead of this computer crap? Empty like the new Stars Wars indeed. Le sigh.
I' was also surprised it's inclusion, you can pick them up for $4. They're not exactly a hard card to get a hold of.
On the other hand, if you expect almost every card in Modern Masters to be cards that go for $10+, prepare to be massively disappointed. They won't fill an entire set as such and many will have unrealistic expectations of Wizards in regards to this product. I wouldn't be surprised if we see them take this as an opportunity to include sought-after EDH cards in new card frames, as well, which could be where City of Brass makes more sense.

Not every card, but it would be nice for the rares and mythics to actually be desirable rares and mythics. The last thing we need is filler cards in a limited print run set.
That art is pretty and pretty art is always a wonderful thing but I am disappointed to see City of Brass. It was always a terrible card to me because I hate taking damage for any reason. I want my lands to help my deck not hurt me and betray me to my enemies. I guess I will have to wait to see more cards before deciding whether Modern Masters is really worth it to buy for me.

I have to say I find this funny considering the dominance of fetchlands (ie. Misty Rain Forest, Scalding Tarn, Marsh Flats, Arid Mesa, Verdant Catacombs) and shocklands (ie. Blood Crypt, Sacred Foundry et al). Modern mana bases are dominated by both types of cards, using one to fetch the other. The amount of life lost due to running fetchlands just for the sake of thinning a deck out so you don't draw into lands can be very high.
As for City of Brass not being used in Modern, let's be realistic here: This set, despite being a limited print run, is meant to at least somewhat lower the bar for entry into the format. They might reprint the Zendikar fetchlands in this set, or even the Onslaught fetchlands. But what are new Modern players supposed to use who can't get four copies of two or three different fetchlands, while they get their shocklands as well? City of Brass is an excellent answer to a deck that needs mana fixing for those players. Yes, for paying $6-7 a pack I would rather pull a fetchland every time, or something worth more than the City of Brass... but that's unrealistic.
No fetchlands in Modern Masters. The Onslaught fetchlands aren't legal in Modern, and printing them here wouldn't make them legal. And they've said that the reprints go up only through Alara Reborn.
And yeah, this artwork has been on the "product information" page for months. Not really a shocker.

I do not play fetchlands that cost life. Mirage has some lovely alternatives. And I have never played an untapped shockland. That is what dual lands are for, after all.

Hmm, I seem to have missed where they said the reprints only go up through Alara Reborn. Did they also state that all the cards in the set have to be Modern legal? Because frankly, I'm skeptical that they would make an entire set of nothing but modern legal cards from Mirrodin up and through Shards of Alara without basically building people's decks for them through booster packs. The onslaught fetchlands wouldn't be made legal through being reprinted in Modern Masters, but I can see Wizards using the product as an opportunity to reprint some other increasingly difficult-to-acquire cards. If it truly is only from Mirrodin/8th ED through Shards, we're looking at a pretty narrow scope of useful cards without making the packs have a lot of filler no one cares about, and with it being a limited print run at an increased price, I can't see Wizards designing this set with limited in mind.
At the very least, it'll offer some mana-fixing for limited. It was originally a rare, but I could see them making it an uncommon rarity for Modern Masters. And if it is a rare, a little more meh, but ya take what ya can get. Beats some garbage we get of late.
You badly need to read the product announcement. 8th Ed to Alara Reborn, designed specifically for Modern. They're not going to put non-Modern cards in there.
I read it when it was first announced, and haven't really paid attention to it since then because there hasn't actually been any news to discuss. So, forgive me for being a bit forgetful on the specifics of the announcement and being a bit speculative. Generally I don't come to the Rumor Mill to keep upping my post count through baseless speculation like the still-open original announcement thread is that I just saw below. Oops.

All fetchlands cost life. If you're playing Mirage lands and dual lands, then this set may irrelvant to you, as the format it's designed for is irrelevant to you. It is called Modern Masters, after all. We know Tarmogoyf is going to be reprinted which is a staple in all eternal formats, but anything else such as Dark Confidant or cards that are staples in both Modern and Legacy/Vintage both that could be printed here will be hard to come by.
I love the new artwork, very happy to get a nice modern foil treatment of it in physical form. Its a playable card, not terrible, probably put in there to smooth out the limited mana bases (since I doubt there will be too many dual lands in there, shocks are in RTR/GCR/DGM already). There are typically 50 rares in a set, so there's plenty of room for something like this in there.
Its also not a "limited print run" in regards to being super limited, they've said somewhere else that it will be almost an expert expansion level print run. They've learned from Commander's Arsenal and this set is meant to be supported for drafting for awhile.

City of Brass is actually a great card, and doesn't come in black border in the new card face, unless you go for a foil 8th edition. I know I'm excited to get a Modern Masters City of Brass to fit into my modern bordered, bb, non-foil cube.
Not to mention, City of Brass is a cube and EDH staple too, I don't see why people are complaining about it. I don't think that Modern Masters is just going to be cards that are good in competitive Modern decks. I think it's just going to have some nice cards from the last 10 years that are playable in lots of formats: Legacy/Modern, Cube, EDH etc.
I guess we knew they were going to include low value cards that see virtually zero play in modern.
But still, this is a low value card that sees virtually zero play in modern.
You would think such cards would at least be there to appeal to the EDH crowd.
I guess this counts, but just *barely*.
I hope it is Uncommon, as was suggested earlier.
