This seems like a terrible idea. I absolutely loved reading about Worlds and was extremely excited for 16 + rounds of improved coverage for next year. How on earth are they going to execute their goal of conclusive world champion if every one of the 16 chosen don't battle the other 15?
Bad, bad, bad. It started with removing player rewards, then the terrible system that is planeswalker points, and now this garbage?

Well, with only 16 participants, you can actually do full round-robin pairings and ensure every participant plays every other participant for a full match, then provide full coverage of 100% of those matches online.
Okay? And do it in multiple formats? Rounds of 5 games each and then...? Unless they have each player play each other player in Legacy, draft, sealed and Standard they won't be conclusive. And it won't be as exciting as the current system.
Really interested to see what the format for Worlds will be. Hard to imagine a structure that would make sense with 16 players while not being horribly variance-dependent.
this completely defeats the purpose of a full championship that nationals can feed into.
Its like they eliminated the Invitational to create an invitational without the prize of designing a card, while eliminating one of the championships i, an aspiring player, can try to get to.
Now all i have in Canada is Nationals. And as a Saskatchewan player i can't even play in PTQ's without having to travel for days, as I'm a student.
They are really trying to turn Magic into a privatized "pay more, play more" game, and I'm not liking that i can't prove my skill without dropping my current life to do so.
They need to start looking at other borders and seeing how they are turning this into an American centric game, and other countries are losing out because of it.
Its time for a Canadian to step up and say "we want more tournaments and here is how we will do it in Western Canada" as its tough for me to prove my worth, other than Provincials and NQ's.

Hold on, are you REALLY saying "I dont want to make time to be a professional player, but they should make it for me."
This change, alters the professional game, not the semi-pro game, not the play to have fun at the occasional PTQ.
Additionally, the winner of a pro tour isn't necessarily in the top 16 players in the world. How many pro tours has Owen Turtenwald won? Most people would agree though, that he is on his game right now and easily one of the best current players.

The PROS, the ones travelling week on week.
And as the people who are the primary support for such events, we should be able to voice distaste for such decisions. We may just be lowly spectators and amateurs, but we still have some sort of investment here.
This stinks of another budget cut to Wizards of the Coast from Hasbro. By running Worlds at Gen Con, the costs of running and organizing that tournament are drastically reduced, even if they do offer a $100,000 purse. So essentially another Pro Tour got cut, so only 3 of them now exist, and the season is done by August because Worlds is at Gen Con now. So either there is a dearth of any pro level events from August to January or we now have NBA scheduling where there is now a 2011-2012 season.
Worlds went from being a spectacle to a glorified FNM.

No. I'm saying it should be a little easier than it is, to actually PLAY in larger tournaments. Not necessarily become a pro, but i would like to play in a larger tournament than ****ing provincials.
You don't live in Saskatchewan so i wouldn't expect you to understand but its difficult to actually play in better tournaments than...small tournaments.
Thanks for degrading me, but they don't actually make much money from the pros. They give them free money to play more.

No, i live in Rural BC, again, hours away from "Larger tournaments" I myself travelled a little more than 2 hours to get to provincials.
These changes are for Professionals. If you arent travelling to these large tournaments NOW, then this announcement is meaningless.
i can't prove my skill without dropping my current life to do so.
This has been the case for a long, long time, my friend. At least, once you're old enough to have a job and spouse and kids. I suppose it's not a coincidence that many of the top players are single and "unfettered," or were that way when they made their mark (for those who have settled down since).
Make no mistake: Unless you have Searching-For-Bobby-Fischer freak skill, the way to the pro tour was by grinding, every-single-week. Travel on three weeks out of four (more if you don't live in California, Illinois, Ohio, or the Atlantic coast), play testing and monitoring the top tech daily. If you can do that and not drop your current life, you need to go into the organizational planning business -- you'll make millions. And then you can play all the MTG you want.
Such change in the structure of games is just damaging the whole community...
We are somehow being "forced" to play much more games,
no matter FNM / NQ/ Nationals/ PTQ etc in order to earn those "virtually meaningless" planeswalker points for the top level matches like Worlds and PT
Planeswalker points is the thing that matters everything
What we want is actually things which "encourages" us to play more, not "forcing" us to play more
Once the players reward was wonderful for encouraging players to play more , right ?
I'd just return back to magic in recent days (started ~ onslaught block, left @ ravnica block), PLEASE
Generate some better policies that encourages me to play more games and enjoy playing them, but not for only "points"
My opinion? A new system for top level games in 2012? Fine. But bring back the Player's Reward System. That's thing keeping players in the game, in the community, and also in the wallet of WOTC.
Got a certain level of planeswalker points > send you some free cards
"Encouraging" players to play more and also attracting them to fight for "points" in the system. Simple.
Well i don't understand why WotC hypes this game to be the game that anyone can be a champion in. Im rather disappointed. I hate doing stuff without purpose and my purpose with Magic has been to step up a notch to the next level, do well and get recognized by someone important that "Hey, we should get this guy on board"
I now see this is a fools dream, as i refuse to give up my schooling to do so. Maybe if i move to the states or europe with my degree i can do both but as a Canadian i feel...like I'm not important. ESPECIALLY with the "North American" clause, as lets face it 99% of grinders are american, leaving us with nothing.

I hate it to when companies who sole purpose is to make money force their customers to buy their product rather than encourage them too. Damn them and their good business sense. /sarcasm
This change has absolutely no impact on me personally. But I'm very concerned this is going to drive established "professional" players away from the game.
I think that is the opposite of their goal, but if they think having one fewer PT per year is the way to keep the pros in the game, they're going about it wrong.
I am not a fan of the change... It makes it much less entertaining. I really don't think Estratti should be in this invitational when guys like LSV and PV may be left out. I hate this.
Wizards why cant you just go back to your old selves before Hasbro bought you out.
Discuss.
Feels like they are rushing to get things around and haven't thought everything through.

Weirdly, standard has been BAD since JTMS was banned, it hasn't been fun, nor healthy since.

Now that they've got this whole infrastructure, some kind of rewards structure would be a good use of lifetime PWPs, I agree.
