I can finally say something! I've had to sit on this for some time as I was unable to share this news with everyone until today. The public relations firm that Wizards of the Coast works with sent me a beautiful, hi-res picture of Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker as a tease for the new Conflux set coming out in January 2009.
When I saw the name of the attachment, a few thoughts shot through my mind: I had already seen the rumor thread that listed Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker as being a card in Conflux. That was old news. However, for a few happy seconds, I thought that I had been sent the actual card. (Lack of sleep and my daughter being sick and up a lot at night helped me to believe this fantasy.)
I opened the image and was really impressed. The art is cool. I really enjoy the style of art, the composition, coloring and it's so much more mature than the Legends card. But then reality set in and I realized that I had been sent just the art and not the actual card. So we don't know what the card will do, but it is a Planeswalker. Very cool.
The art is amazing and is befitting of someone like Nicol Bolas. I agree that this is much better looking than the legends art, which didn't look that threatening. This art though says "Bow down, or your ****ed!" Just like how it should be with one of the most powerful Planeswalkers ever.
Now hopefully the card will be really powerful, like the most powerful Planeswalker, I mean Tarmogoyf level power. He just needs to be that good.
Looks really cool, you get the feeling its more regal and intelligent than, say, some native Jund dragons. It's still kinda hard to determine what color/s he'll be based on just the art, though. Also looks a tad malnourished

He's not malnourished he is fit. And yeah you can definitely see some draconian intelligence in him.
As for what colors he will be, probably UBR, given that is what colors his non-Planeswalker card was and the fact that he is supposedly the Planeswalker that occupies Grixis.
Oh my Effing god. That art really is beautifull. It really fits Nicol Bolas, and it indeed has a very high *get out of my way or you're toasted* aura surounding it.
Plus... It confirms the list 100%. Hooray new rumour season
WOAH. Amazing art right there! very fitting for him imo. (I wonder who did it...) What's that between his "horns"? The mask of Myojin of Night's Reach?

So it is clear that the image on the Conflux booster was indeed Bolas, as well as the dragon the 'walkers are fightning at the Fat Pack boxes.
They pretty much paved the way to new Bolas image with the FTV: D version. It is great to see him back, and I can think of only one thing that, feeling-wise, rivals his re-emergence - the card for Jaya Ballard in TS.
Thanks a lot for reporting, Mohan!

His art is just about as stunning and majestic as you could ask for for such a beloved and powerful character. Doesn't matter what he decides to do for you (i.e. how crappy his abilities may turn out to be), at least they hit it right for his depiction. And good God I didn't realize those were other dragons, I thought they were birds o.O. His scale is sublime in terms of Magic art.
Some nit-picks, however. I don't know what it is about his jaw, but the foreshortening kinda distracts me, almost like they tried to make his face more human than a long dragon snout. Probably just the angle, though. And I agree about the scarf. The chest armor is cool and all, and some form of cape/tabard/cloth like the scarf gives him a more intellectual presence, but what happens if it falls off? Can you imagine seeing Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, powerful god-like being...bending over to pick up his scarf? lol.
All that aside, I am very pleased.

Actually, I can't say I'm all that impressed. The Legends art is far superior IMO. This thing looks like an emaciated cow standing on a cliff about to commit suicide. There's just a complete lack of detail when it comes to his characterization. Ho-hum.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
He looks like he's voiced by Norio Wakamoto. A good fit for him, actually.
And why does he wear a scarf?
As I see it, the artist was given a task to depict Bolas in such way that he would have the feel of majestic, intriguing, somewhat civilized and highly intelligent mastermind and evil overlord, not some random, brutal and primeval dragon (like the creatures of Jund). The scarf gives him sort of civilized look, and the humanlike stance and facial expression captures the evil intelligence spirit in an extremely satisfying way.
This art is just kickass....fully fitting to such a character. Excellent piece, Wizards.

Did it mention who drew it? I'm honestly going to buy a print of this as soon as it's released. It's just amazing.

Pretty picture looks pretty in planeswalker frame! He is also frickin' huge when compared to the other dragons "swarming" across the picture! o_O

Because the original art was crap, so they're following a different artistic path?
