With half the top 8 being workshop, the bolts must have helped a lot against those annoying golems...
Lightning Bolt honestly seems like a necessity with Bob and Lodestone Golem being the majority of the format. Not to mention Trygon Predator, Noble Hierarch, Qasali Pridemage, Phyrexian Revoker, Gaddock Teeg, Thalia....just about everything.

Your question is a bit of a necro but I am going to give you some examples. Please be advised that your question is also a bit like tell me the history of the U.S. - there is a lot to be explained.
But the three main (as I see them) win conditions of the first deck are things like:
Time Vault and Voltaic Key - generating infinite turns
Tinker into Blightsteel Colussus, then if you have a Time Walk you can attack and win through most defenses.
Simply ultimating Jace's Planeswalker abilities.
These are probably the 3 main "ways to win" that are 1-3 card interactions.
But there are plenty of other neat interactions such as Sense's Divining Top helping to constrain the life lost to Dark Confidant; Brainstorm and Fetchlands to turn Brainstorm into a draw 3 cards; Snapcaster to recast Lightning Bolt; Voltaic Key on Mana Crypt to generate 3 mana; Tolarian Academy with multiple artifacts in play to generate insane amounts of mana; Voltaic Key and Sensei's Divining Top to draw 2 cards and Vampiric Tutor to find Yawgmoth's Will to replay everything in your graveyard again setting up insane card advantage.
I could go on and on. It can also win by doing things like beating down with Snapcaster's or Bob, or something ridiculous like Decking them with Ancestral Recall if they only have a few cards left.
