Reveal the top card of your library and put that card into your hand. You lose life equal to its converted mana cost. You may repeat this process any number of times.
This card will draw less cards than Necropotence and take more life from you at the same time. Unless you draw only lands/Moxes. Plus, it cost 5 mana and only a one time "investment" while Necro can get you cards each turn. May not be too much relevant as most of the time if you resolve Necro you either win within the following turn or two, or lose very quickly after.

It is an instant though, and in a deck built around it could be very potent.
As for shards Im more excited about mindlock orb in shop decks
Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
Spoiled in the Magic show this week, Ad nauseum seems like a pretty sick card for vintage. Playing 4 of them maindeck along with nothing else but free mana and you can tear through your entire deck. Add in dark confidant for additional synergy and it looks like a pretty powerful combination.
Pretty much you can ad nauseum for your entire deck if its all land/free mana + ad nauseum + win con (tendrils? yawgwin?)
What do you guys think about this type of deck?

Reveal the top card of your library. You lose life = to its cmc. Repeat this any number of times

The card itself seems plausible to me. If you take a typical long based deck with duress based disruption, even with 4 of these and a bargain, the average cc is less than 2, which means you can fairly often rely on this to draw about 10 cards, and it is both castable with rituals and end of turn, which should make the subsequent turn be an easy win. That being said, it does cost 5 mana, and requires some deck restructuring, and drawing 10 or so cards may not be worth the constraints it forces on game play.
Found this deck off of SCG's themanadrain.com forum
I DID NOT BUILD THIS DECK, THE BUILDER OF THIS DECKLIST IS marske
he also had a very detailed design plan and if you are interested in looking at it go to: www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=36729.0

Playable as a one of? a third Necropotence effect
I don't play too much vintage but I'd like to hear some thoughts on it.

Also, it's from Shards, not Eventide.

Powerful card regardless, I wouldn't ignore it.
