I have found that the version of Tezz that runs Bob's {for new players that means Dark Confidant} is far more brutal with it's speed. I could post my comments on the deck that was posted up on this thread here with the {wastelands}, but I feel it may not be for the best.
This deck I'm bringing to you now is the one and probably only strong version of Mana Drain Tezz. The funny part is the player that created this deck must have known about the B/R list and thirst of knowledge while testing. What I'm saying is he made the cut -3 and faced others that didn't ofcourse and he's the one that still won.
I feel this guy gets no real credit due to the fact he's using the I.T. Engine, but this again shows just how powerful that engine is!!!
Bob and force's together are proven, and what does Dark Confidant say?
"Greatness, at any cost"
I don't know if you're a new player to vintage, but Bob is the broken and that 5 life usually never has a drawback on the state base effect of the overall outcome on the game.
If WIZARDS would ever restrict a creature again {why back in the old days they did}........he would be the fastest choice ever made!!!
Bobs do seem pretty good, especially with Top... However I try to avoid lifelose wherever I can. I can just imagine having a bob out and having the vault-key combo in process and losing. You have no idea how many times that has happpened with Mana Crypt. For sure you do not run 4 for this reason but still it makes your matchup against creature and aggro decks worse.
One thing I don't like about the Oath package is it takes up a lot of sideboard slots. My meta is looking to be Tez, Grow and Dredge.... So i need the Seals, Goyfs and Threads of disloyalty and GY hate. My SB is looking like this ATM:
And that is probably not enough hate, so I really don't have any room....
This upcoming sunday there is a ancestral tournament at my local store. Christopher Rush is going to be there and its going to be very awesome.... So i need to get my decklist finallized for then.... Heres my main deck
1.) Anyone who thinks cancel is viable should be shot. in the face. with a hammer.
2.) You misunderstand, what I was suggesting was the total exclusion of Spellstutter Sprite, because it just isnt that good anymore.
3.) Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.
I would say so for the obvious reasons:,
Pitch to a FoW
Shroud
Islandwalk
Very hard to handle.
Thoughcast is a reasonable card, and has made several decks like the U/B painter win a couple first place slots. We've lost about everything else so in that view point it's a very good card now considering your stated points:,
Drain range
we have the artifacts
and yeah it's a sorcery, but 2 cards are 2 cards;)
In decks like Grow, where you already have efficant beaters, Darksteel is better, because it is just another wincon that they NEED to deal with.
However in Tez, its an alternate wincon. Your banking on it to ride you to victory.. so you want it stick around.
So anyway there was that ancestral tournament. I didn't do so well. Round one mono red with 4 null rod and 4 wasteland. Round 2 mono block with 4 null rod and 4 wasteland. Round 3 it was 5 color with 4 nullrod and 4 wasteland.
I decided my current list is to fragile. It is just so susceptable to hate. So heres my new idea:
Not to be rude bud but this is looking kinda casual. Did you take in consideration that maybe your sideboard just wasn't that tuned for the event {Hurkyl's Recall, Rebuild, Repeal, Energy Flux ect}? You should have never lost to a black deck or the red deck, but you might have battled the 5c deck anyways.
Try that Bob version I posted if you're looking for a bit more of a aggro stomper.

Yeah... I did some testing and drew the same conclusion.
A new idea though i am testing out is a more fishy version of tez... With disruption out the wazoo (Tsieze, Duress, Sculler) with a more combo finish (Enligtened Tutor, Trinket Mage). Needs testing for sure.
I have a version with Trinket mage that I think you might enjoy, and as far as the disruption goes I would use nomore then 5 slots in the maindeck.
Example 1:, Most common way to rip an opp's heart out;)
4x Duress
1x Thoughtseize
Example 2:, My Person Fav if your env has Fish,Welders, Bobs ect:thumbsup:...
3x Thoughtseize
2x Duress
But nomore then 5 is needed for the full effect.
I was on the ladder for anyone trying to break use with Enlightened Tutor, but I come to my own conclusion that white just isn't worth the time and effort {even for these tutors} to be a worth anything considering the mana fix'in that's needed. I might be wrong on this one so that's just one members opinion on the topic.
Here's a version after the B/R list {Just a rough temp}

well this past weekend i played the huge 2 day event in chicago for 18 pieces of power.
i don't play vintage on a regular basis, so i just built a pretty standard list with AK's and the oath board plan. though there was tons of agro, i wasn't paired against it day one. work shop decks really rolled me.

i'm not sure what place i got, i was just there to have fun... a learning experiance as this was my first competitive vintage tourny. day one i think i went 4-2-1. and day two was 3-2-2 i believe.
the main problem i ran into (all my 1-0 loses and 1-1 ties) were from me taking to long to think things through, and especialy taking too long to sideboard. again, i wasn't familure with the deck or vintage in general (i'm usualy playing standard).
it's easy to know what i want to come IN. but how in the hell do you figure out what to take out??? more often than not i was taking out precious draw cards.
ps.. skeletal scrying was INSANE! i didn't even know the card existed until i saw the tezz player in the top 8 play it. so day two i played it and it found it's way into my hand more often than not. very nice to dump drain mana into. i drew 4, 6 and 9 cards that i remember. ALL AT INSTANT SPEED! just sick in this format.

It depends on what you are playing against. Learning to side is difficult, you make decisions based on what you think they are thinking about. For example, last night i played in a 17 person tournament and won with Grim Long. My sideboard was a full tezz/painter adaption. To better illustrate this, let me post my deck, my SB and my change between matches.

I believe that it is very important to know the intricacies of what you are playing against and what your meta looks like. If you opponent has not artifacts, H. Recall isn't as useful. Or if they are creature heavy, using Duress is not as valuable. Be aware of what your playing. Another hint, when your playing against a newer player wielding something like Tezz, if they win game one with time vault combo, make sure to ask them how they are going to win. If they say, im going to grindstone you, or kill you with leviathan/DSC, you know what to side in. A good Tezz player will tell you that they are making all their artifacts into 5/5/ creatures. That way you have no idea how to side.
I like some of your points {you seem kinda wild with your side boarding but that's my opinion} they're valid:).
Oh and a good player might give you a answer to a question like that, but a GREAT would not even take the time to answer such questions or give hints....... so why would you give a opp a chance?....you wouldn't bud.
NEVER EVER EVER.............Ever ever ever start to get friendly at a tourney with a opp if your hopes are winning the top seat, and what I mean is give nothing!!! but take everything!!! sounds brutel doesn't it? well that's the big boy scene and it can be:mad: . To note I do always try to enjoy each encounter I meet though. Facing new players is always a blast. It helps me take in the decks they pilot, and understand different styles of game play that inwhich helps towards side boarding as well.
Heck I might ask a opp a Q, but I wouldn't ever give him a answer if he tried to get info from me! I have played against pro's that if I had the game locked early {turns 1,2, and they're dead on 3} they would do nothing but lay a land and say go in hopes I remained clueless................the whole time I'm thinking what the hell is this guy playing........but I do it too I guess on that topic.
Side boarding is very easy if you don't over work your brain, and with more games comes the ability to have that keen sense of what needs to be done games 2/3 against your meta, and if not the're enough guys like me on this site that would take the time to help you if you have a heads up on your meta {I've helped out my share here} so you can become a better mage.
S.M.
EDIT:
I did face a player in my group that pulled the same sideboard trick! Shuffled in full maskNought..........was pretty damn sneaky and he did win game 2!

However, when I do this, I shuffle my entire SB into my deck and simply remove the cards so my opponent does not know how many cards, if any that I sided in.
that is ungodly smart! i'm doing this from now on in every format. thank you.

yes, thats easy. but thats only 1 -3 cards. i was always wanting add more. when you're not using a transformational board, say i was playing against grim long with the deck i posted above, how would you side?

yes that was me, i showed inkwell day one and colossus day two (to speed things up since i was taking so long). now i know better, thank you for that one as well.
you know it's weird... i'm no pro, but i'm pretty damn good. i top 8ed the amature champs a few years ago, come a hair away from ptq top 8 several times, always dominate fnm, and when i have time for legacy always do great there too. this from a guy who quit magic after fallen empires and just started again with timespirle. then i play one vintage tourny and i feel like a complete idiot. i mean, i seriously felt like a slow witted moron amongst a room full of genius's. having two people pissed they lost and very rude probably didn't help the way i felt either.
so with that being said, any and all tips you can offer are much appreciated. i plan on playing in their monthly mox tourny from now on as it's the only place i know of that plays vintage.

Here's a version of TezzCast, and I know it's a first place winning deck but I'm not sure on the tourney details yet.
I'm play testing {having a good time} tonight.
I just want to get this out right now. If you're a player that faces Null Rod alot you need to know this deck as the power to over come that challenge.
If you're facing alot of Wasteland effects then join the club because outside just a few decks {most Tier 1 decks have 1-2 basic lands in them} they still seem to win the top spots taking home the Lotus;)
i would say -2 thoughtcast/trinket mage (not sure he's so good with few relivant targets), +1 skeletal scrying +1 imperial seal. also i'm not sure repeal is better than echoing truth.
but i've got a question...
i see you have a Trinisphere in your board and it's not the first time i've seen this. why? i don't understand why you'd ever want to play it in this deck. what am i missing?

Running a trinisphere is a nice way to slow down combo. However, I would never run this as it would make everything you cast cost 3, which is very consuming.
It KILLS storm based combo decks, and the deck that's boarding the Sphere in is more then able to play through the slow crawl to win the outcome is probably answer to the "why" I believe;).
I like how you said consuming, but I think the overall feeling with Trinishpere is the victory that's in mind while paying that little extra.

But as a person who has run Tezz both in a competitive environment and in playtesting, I have had too many matches where I was able to barely squeek out a voltaic key/time vault combo, especially against fish, I would be hard pressed to use Trini. However, I occassionally splash white in aggro heavy metas for SotP/PoE and Orim's Chant

1 Echoing Truth
1 Rebuild
1 Oxidize
Total: 13 Cards
However, when I do this, I shuffle my entire SB into my deck and simply remove the cards so my opponent does not know how many cards, if any that I sided in.

EDIT:
I did face a player in my group that pulled the same sideboard trick! Shuffled in full maskNought..........was pretty damn sneaky and he did win game 2!
that is ungodly smart! i'm doing this from now on in every format. thank you.
yes, thats easy. but thats only 1 -3 cards. i was always wanting add more. when you're not using a transformational board, say i was playing against grim long with the deck i posted above, how would you side?
yes that was me, i showed inkwell day one and colossus day two (to speed things up since i was taking so long). now i know better, thank you for that one as well.
you know it's weird... i'm no pro, but i'm pretty damn good. i top 8ed the amature champs a few years ago, come a hair away from ptq top 8 several times, always dominate fnm, and when i have time for legacy always do great there too. this from a guy who quit magic after fallen empires and just started again with timespirle. then i play one vintage tourny and i feel like a complete idiot. i mean, i seriously felt like a slow witted moron amongst a room full of genius's. having two people pissed they lost and very rude probably didn't help the way i felt either.
so with that being said, any and all tips you can offer are much appreciated. i plan on playing in their monthly mox tourny from now on as it's the only place i know of that plays vintage.

I like how you said consuming, but I think the overall feeling with Trinishpere is the victory that's in mind while paying that little extra.
