Hello all. I am very interested in getting into Vintage. I am in this awkward position where I have picked up some power and other "power level" cards, and am looking to figure out what I should be playing so I can work on picking up the appropriate cards. Here is what I have to work with:
Pearl
Emerald
Jet
Ruby
Timetwister
2 Bazaar
Workshop
3 Mana Drain
I am not looking for a "budget deck" and would be able to borrow/trade for any other cards I need. The problem is that nobody in the area plays vintage, so I am practically on an island. Here are the decks that I prefer to play (to give you an idea of what I am used to)
Modern- Storm, Jund
Legacy- Sneak and Show, Lands
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated, since I would love to get involved in Vintage.
The deck that looks the most like Lands is MUD since they're both prison decks but MUD also has a clock and disrupt way faster.
There is two builds of storm in vintage The Perfect Storm that has a Control Shell and the new Burning Long that has a Oath of Druids/Burning Wish shell. There is also Gush combo deck and Tezzeret combo decks with Time Vault, Voltaic Key. Even control decks can play combo in vintage.
Oath combo or Oath control decks are similar to Sneak and Show.
I don't know what deck could be similar to Jund.
Other important vintage decks: Planeswalker Control, Snapcaster Control, Standstill Control, various Hatebears deck.
You can look for lists either on themanadrain or morphling.de
I would suggest building Dredge and another one so you can loan a deck to someone to play against.
The first question I'd ask even before deck selection is, after you "get into Vintage", when and how often do you expect to be able to play it? Are you hoping to introduce others in your playgroup for casual games? Waiting for Vintage on MODO? Proxy tournament once a month in the next state over?
If no one in your area already plays Vintage, I would suggest NOT building Dredge if you ever want your friends to actually agree to play with you. There's no better way to scare someone away from a format than to confirm all of the reasons they haven't yet given it a chance.
Otherwise, follow varal's metagame deck breakdown. One Workshop deck (Espresso Stax or MUD), one combo deck (TPS or Oath), and one blue-based control deck (just to get some use out of those Drains) seems like a good start.
I agree with not starting out with Dredge. Most casual players will have no idea whats going on, and just have a glazed look on their faces.
I would think if your a fan of sneak and show, you would love GG Oath. The great thing with that deck, is you can make a transformational side board and go right into an Oath storm deck. Huge fun!

Otherwise, every other decks play Black Lotus and some more Power pieces.
With 3 more Mishra's Workshop and a Mox Sapphire you could build MUD but I'm sure you can play without the Sapphire.
With Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, Mox Sapphire and maybe Time Vault it opens all the control decks, combo decks, aggro-control decks.
