Yeah I think it's better than Plunderer for sure (unless you go out of your way to make Proliferate work), but I'd make a cut elsewhere. Blue aggro/tempo is creature-light compared to like... Boros, but still needs a few options as 1-2 cmc creatures
That less than 50% chances on a given turn to be anything but a 1/3 wall do not look good enough. No one has been particularly excited to play Fa'adiyah Seer.
I am not sure where Pitt's stats on Militia Bugler are coming, though. I will admit I am a bit uncertain on whether I feel confident enough on it (even if white wants more CA or board-affecting ETBs). However, based on the stats I saw someone post, 50% is definitely wrong, unless you count adding, say, an Elite Vanguard to still be a terrible scenario. However, in my CU/be, for instance, around 2/3 of all creatures are viable and many of them are (to some extent) build-arounds for which you would want to dig (e.g. Wonder, Young Pyromancer, Kwende, Pride of Femeref, Whisper, Blood Liturgist).
I was initially interested in Greenseeker, until someone pointed out that it compares poorly with Borderland Ranger and Sylvan Ranger, since both of those draw you the land immediately and can also let you fix your mana and/or help you splash.
But then I started to think about it as a Sigiled Starfish. It is definitely an oversimplification to see seeker as a starfish that scries lands into your hand rather than to the bottom of your library, but I’m still more interested now.
It will really help you draw gas in the late game while still letting you hit land drops for mana sinks.
Militia Bugler needs your deck to support its ability as well. Yeah, 2/3s of your creatures may fit its ability, but your deck is going to be only 35-45% creatures, not all of which will fit Bugler's ability. Even if you play 18 creatures, if 2/3 fit Bugler, you're already down to just 12 possible hits (11 if we assume Bugler is part of that 2/3). Given that a 2/3 for 3 with vigilance is not exactly a great prospect, the worst case is not appealing, and it's not unlikely to happen.
Bugler will be good in some decks, but it seems to me that it's going to be a fairly narrow card given the deckbuilding restrictions.
Personally, I'm looking at Departed Deckhand instead of Phantasmal Bear and Siege Rhino Sovereign instead of Indulgent Tormentor. Maybe Double Cast and Mirror Image. Not great, but not terrible for a core set.
Looking at white creature decks from my cube the number of hits range from 10-13 (71%-82%), so you don't need to build around it to get 70% (at least in my cube). I think it's good at 75%, since there are so many impactful creatures it can hit (all 3 Blood artists, Mulldrifters, Man-o'-wars, Elite Scaleguard, Kongming, Soltari Champion, Pianna, etc.).
Finally got a chance to sit down and do my traditional way too early top 20. It was not particularly easy to find 20 cards in a set with so many reprints, and I am only adding 5 of these cards in total. I always rank these based on my excitement level to CUbe, so you may see more speculative cards higher on this list.
20) Aven Wind Mage- Similar, but weaker than similar 3-mana Izzet cards. May have been a higher consideration from a set without so many other good blue 3-drops.
19) Heroic Reinforcements- Much weaker than most of the other good mass pump options in Boros, but does help go wide a little bit better.
18) Plague Mare- Only a 2/2 and double black at 3 mana, but could maybe kill multiple creatures sometimes.
17) Skyscanner- Would probably rather have search for a basic over draw a card from this, but your preferences may vary.
16) Lightning Mare- Powerful for a two drop, but double red makes casting it too much of a hassle.
15) Poison-Tip Archer- Body is a bit below rate, but the death trigger could make it interesting for those token/sacrifice decks.
14) Volley Veteran- Would be much more excited if I felt like this constantly did 2 damage. Not impossible if more good Goblins are printed.
13) Cavalry Drillmaster and 12) Viashino Pyromancer- Both add some damage when they ETB. Pyromancer is a consistent 2 damage on ETB while Drillmaster is inconsistent but could sometimes punch through more than 2 damage. However, two mana 2/1s with no combat abilities better do something good to impact the board if they want to be cubed.
11) Skyrider Patrol- Body is certainly below rate, but could do a great job piling on extra damage while it is on the board.
10) Siegebreaker Giant- A bit frail for five mana, but it hits hard alone and its ability could lead to some very good attacks.
9) Satyr Enchanter- My CUbe is not really anywhere close to making this work, but I cannot help but be interested in such a powerful build-around.
8) Vine Mare- 3 toughness is a bummer, but a 5-power hexproof creature for 2GG certainly has lots of potential power.
7) Meteor Golem- Not too far from what I look for in a ramp/reanimation target since it can have a very strong impact on ETB.
6) Militia Bugler- While I do not think this requires a ton of build around work, I am not convinced the power level is there. I would rather have Sunscourge Champoion and its guaranteed 4/4 after death than a 60-70% chance to draw a creature, which could be low impact. Champion has been good, but not great, so I will leave Bugler behind.
5) Goblin Motivator- I do not particularly love most of my red 1-drops, but Bloodlust Inciter has been okay enough that I want a second copy rather than some of my other current red 1-drops.
4) Vampire Sovereign- Between being a decent-sized flier, making an opponent lose 3 life and gaining you 3 life, Sovereign is going to matter in almost every match-up and be pretty powerful is most of those match-ups too.
3) Mirror Image- Less versatile than Clone, but probably will be just as powerful in most situations, so very happy for that 1-mana discount off Clone.
2) Departed Deckhand- Even with the drawback, the sheer power of a 2/2 unblockable for 2-mana is impossible to ignore. Feels like a blue Soltari Trooper, all the way down to being awful against Flame Jab and Arc Lightning.
1) Exclusion Mage- This effect is historically very strong and fits in all types of blue decks. I can understand there being lots of similar effects at 3-mana in blue, but this is better than all but Man-o-War.
I am not complaining about my own restraints. It is actually interesting going so deep into a set, because it does make you think about what actually makes a good CUbe card. It is also kind of funny that for 4 of the last 5 sets (all but Rivals of Ixalan), I eventually added cards to my CUbe that I did not even have in my initial top 20. Maybe that means I should do top 30?
Yeah I think it's better than Plunderer for sure (unless you go out of your way to make Proliferate work), but I'd make a cut elsewhere. Blue aggro/tempo is creature-light compared to like... Boros, but still needs a few options as 1-2 cmc creatures
This is exactly the swap I was considering making (Skyship Plunderer for Departed Deckhand). Don't think I've got enough things that play with counters in my 360 for the Plunderer to be worthwhile, and only have five cards that are Spirits (or produce Spirits).
I'm glad that I can replace the horrible computer generated art on Bloodlust Inciter with the slightly better looking Goblin Motivator.
Agreed. I have Goblin Tribal featured heavily too, so the fact that it has a more relevant creature type is gravy. The kids can trigger Quest for the Goblin Lord with it and then throw it overboard to Goblin Warrens when they get sick of it.
White
In: Militia Bugler Out: Abzan Falconer
In: Consul's Lieutenant Out:Ainok bond-kin
The +1/+1 counter theme in white had sort of disappeared, still strong in green and putting +1/+1 on the keyword creatures in white is still good. But these two +1/+1 lords were too specific and slow.
Sunscourge champion vs Bugler is a very real discussion though, I think I might have to play with the bugler before I make a final decision.. there being a sweet full art promo of Bugler makes me want to play it more and I find eternalize as a mechanic a bit finicky.
I have a million spirits but I have no +1/+1 counters in blue at all, they are in all the other colours (and artifacts) though. Also spirits would also block the plunderer as well.
I will miss the Nevermaker lock as a major control win con but Exclusion mage is kind of just a better card.
Frank Karsten has written an article on cards like militia bugler. The table is for 60 card decks, but it's not hard to multiply by 2/3 and use it for 40 card decks.
What do people think of Meteor Golem compared to other 7+ CMC colorless creatures?
I run 3 currently with Bane of Bala Ged, Breaker of Armies, and Artisan of Kozilek.
I think you can justify the 7 drops for late game Control decks, but these are mostly ramp/reanimation options. I think I would rather have Meteor Golem over Breaker of Armies and Bane of Bala Ged since Golem has an impact regardless just for entering the battlefield, although the others are much more devastating as early reanimation targets.
I think I am going to swap Golem in for Breaker, but would hear preferences towards either.
As a sidenote I didn't realise departed deckhand wasn't actually an illusion, its only spells, you can equip it!.
It also won me many games over the weekend.
I hit every-time I cast militia bugler over the weekend... but that probabilistic hit rate is a bit low and he does have a point about 2 power creatures on turn 4 but.... peasant cubes have plenty of Champion of wits and Angel of inventions, In this situation peasant has stronger 2 powered creatures (to be played on turn 4/5) than standard.
Vampire Sovereign also felt like siege rhino, although perhaps the nature of core set draft caused plenty of very close race situations where a lightning helix and a large flyer was what I wanted every time.
"Fell Specter <- Falkenrath Noble (Both similar, but I have a bit of discard in the 360, and this guy will enable it all)"
These cards arent really similar. I dont know what kind of discard synergy you're working with, but cutting one of the cards that are likely to be in the better half of your creatures for it seems ill advised.
/
Meteor golem is "guaranteed" to have an impact, but it also is never worth 7 mana.
A 3/3 for 3 isn't great, but it's still an ok body and it means you only have to hit something for 4 mana to roughly break even and if you absolutely have to remove something cheaper you're probably happy to overpay a little. Add to that the ability's flexibility and the fact that you really want that kind of ability in some colors, because those colors just don't get that kind of effect. It's not that hard to roughly break even, even if golem is rarely going to be fantastic mana-wise.

Similar in the sense that they're both 3B for a flier that can bleed people. But yes, definitely different archetypes.
On Fell Specter, I had one in my pre-release deck, and it annoyed the everloving crap out of people. I dropped it on an opponent with a single card in hand multiple times, and even managed to recur it at one point to do it again in the same game. Falkenrath Noble is obviously one more power / one less toughness, and will bleed opponents in its own way... I've already got Blood Artist and a couple of other things that do that.
But I've also got a suite of discard spells in black that are currently really under-appreciated, and I was kind of thinking that the Specter might help people appreciate them more while the bleeder archetype stays somewhat intact.
I was definitely worried that the Specter might be a step down from the Noble, but after the pre-release experience, I have a feeling it might be closer than we were giving the Specter credit for.
Has anyone got any reps in with Skyrider Patrol yet? Didn't see one the entire weekend, and I'm interested to hear exactly where that one sits.
A 3/3 for 3 isn't great, but it's still an ok body and it means you only have to hit something for 4 mana to roughly break even.
The reason why it's never worth 7 mana is because 7 mana for mediocrity or just breaking even is a poor expenditure of seven mana. We don't spend seven mana on anything else that doesn't have the potential to win the game nearly on its own. And while a 3/3 for 3 is decent, a 3/3 on turn 7 is much worse. Just barely big enough to matter.
I don't buy that argument. One, the ceiling here is obviously higher than mere mediocrity. Two, I also don't see how getting something like a Sifter Wurm doombladed, which leaves you with a bit of lifegain and a scry 3, is less mediocre than destroying a nonland permanent for four even while your opponent is able to deal with a 3/3 without spending a card (which isn't a given at all). By that logic something like [/card]Trostani's Summoner[/card] is also pretty bad. Two bodies that don't matter, one body that "barely matters" and a 4/4.
A 7/7 wins the game if they don't have that doom blade. A 3/3 gets blocked.
Trostani's summoner perhaps one gets blocked but you still have 3 others that get through or trade with something. Metor Golem is a 2 for 1 Summoner is a 4 for 1.
If the general point is that "answers" or cards that primarily answer other cards should never be 7 mana, that's an interesting discussion topic. I think that having a 7 drop whose worst case scenario is trading with the opponent's best permanent and then trading for at least half of a card (which becomes harder for the opponent to do now that they lost their best permanent) is fine.
Given that none of our 7+ mana drops literally win the game the turn thy are played (compared to cards like Craterhoof or Tooth and Nail), they all end up being a balance between impacting the board even if removed and being great attackers and Golem falls clearly towards impacting the board with its ETB.
I am not going to claim Golem is an all-star stable, but it is playable at larger CUbe sizes.
I am not sure where Pitt's stats on Militia Bugler are coming, though.
