How the hell is there another full set of cards about to come out in four days?!?
It's off to a slow start for us, at least -- the Thrashing Brontodon discussion started up in the general Peasant thread, but the handful of other low-rarity cards are pretty much useless for our context.
The Bronty is an interesting card, but it's definitely not better than Wickerbough Elder or Acidic Slime. I also prefer Reclamation Sage... but could see using this in place of Conclave Naturalists. The 1GG cost is annoying, though. Why couldn't it be a white card?!
I think I might cut Wolfir Avenger for this, since that one usually feels slightly awkward. Most aggressive decks don't really want it, and midrange decks would prefer the Brontosaur.
Bronto is a big boy for this mana cost... but relatively unexciting since we have numerous artifact/enchantment destruction on creatures in green. Not worth a slot imo.
That red enrage dino seems sweet. He's a 3/2 not a 2/2...
I like that 2 damage ability. Would be kind of sweet to aim 1 damage from your Arc Lightning to it just to dome your opponent for 2. haha.
I like how he can just chump/trade to deal 2 to your opponent as well. Probably good enough to include.
I'm not really feeling the red enrage dino, to be honest. Just seems worse than Boggart Brute, since it interacts less favorably with equipment, being a non-evasive beatstick. What do you guys see in this dino that I don't?
EDIT: More I think about it, he actually works a lot better with most equipment. Except Heirloom Blade I guess, but Loxodon Warhammer or Grafted Wargear or something is just brutal.
Merfolk as a tribe? We don't even get elves to work properly...
Nobody at least somewhat interested in Secrets of the Golden City? Ten permanents is probably too much, admittedly, but I do think it's worth talking about until we get something actually exciting.
we have now two lords with several playables. Elves is missing the 2nd lord to make it viaable imo again merfolk is still most likely off a few cards for a draftable archetype but it has a chance.
It may not be better than Nekrataal due to lack of first strike but just murdering something is strong
At 360, I won't want Ravenous Chupacabra, Skinrender, AND Nekrataal, but I'm not quite sure which two I like best yet. They each have their pros and cons.
Skinrender has the most relevant body and -3/-3 is usually enough to get the job done.
Chupacabra has the least-conditional 187 effect but leaves behind a vanilla 2/2.
Nekrataal's ETB really only feels bad vs other Bx decks and first-strike makes it a formidable blocker and a decent threat, but its a bit weaker to cards like Cunning Sparkmage and Darkblast.
What exactly is the creature base for Merfolk? You get two lords in two colors now, yes, but after that
Branchwalker
Bad Simic Kird Ape
... uh, the Frost Lynx reprint
... uh...
Like, if Daru Warchief and Undead Warchief aren't cutting it as mono-color lords with vastly more on-type creatures to use, there's no chance for Merfolk.
Seems horrendous. It's pretty much unplayable t1, unplayable on a lot of t2 boards, and I don't get why I would really want this ability much later than that. Would you play 'target creature gets +1+1 counter, scry 1' or 'scry 1'? Because those are real, and really bad, outcomes for this.
Enter the Unknown won't be making my list.
The Chupacabra is a matter of finding space, I don't play Skinrender as I purposefully wanted to trim those types of effects, so I'd be forced to cut Nekrataal, Keening Banshee, Bone Shredder, or Shriekmaw - none of which I'm really that keen to do.

Absolutely. Compared to the merfolk lord, Legion Lieutenant is more likely to see play in a tribe-like shell. At least there are a couple of good vampires.
Chupacabra is miles better than everything that was in Ixalan, so probably.
Remember when people were losing their minds over Charging Monstrosaur? Took me about two drafts to realize it's very hard for an attacking 5-drop to be anything higher than like a ninth pick most of the nights that we cube.

He seems kinda nice.

Trading it for a random 2/2 or 2/1 and... OK? You spent three mana on that?

Merfolk Mistbinder
Seems interesting to say the least at it gives us a second lord for merfolk so it may be enough to create an archetype for us?

Ravenous Chupacabra seems fun IMO

Watery Ambush
Enchantment
When Watery Ambush enters the battlefield, create two 1/1 Merfolk creature tokens with Hexproof.
3U: Target Merfolk can't be blocked this turn.
Not great but could be viable if you wanted to signal to Merfolk as a simic archetype

Nekrataal is the easy cut if you don't want to just +1 your number of ETB creatures, but I'll likely leave in 'Taal and find a different cut.
G - Sorcery - target creature gains exlore, you may play an additional land this turn
Seems decent

Much better upside than at least a couple of the 2/1s for W that already see play.
