We Winchester drafted my cube with three people this weekend. And boy, Ambuscade is amazing, even outside of HoD limited. Aerial guide was also good. not outstanding, but good enough to be a threat.
Nice to hear some feedback on ambuscade, I wouldn't know if I'd put it in at 360, same goes for Aerial guide... would you?
I'm not sure because this set is weird for commons: you get a bunch of pendants (great word Al_Z) that are likely better than any of their pre-existing counterparts -- but their counterparts were never staples and its not clear how much the new cards raise the bar.
Oketra's Avenger over non Daring Skyjek 3/1s
Dauntless Aven over Eagle of the Watch (debatable Misthoff Kirin)
Ambuscade over fight spells and Rabid Bite
Aerial Guide over Trained Condor
Bitter Sharpshooters over Sentinel Spider
Just chiming in with a couple notes to update the discussion.
Countervailing Winds' stock could go up for me if we get just a couple decent Surveil cards from Guilds of Ravnica. Anyone already running this? (and/or Circular Logic?)
I overlooked Oasis Ritualist initially but this card seems very good as a pseudo-Explosive Vegetation at common. Obviously there are some differences, but I'm looking mostly at the mana cost - it's rare that 4+ cost ramp sees play in powered cubes, I have little experience with peasant cubes, and none good enough in pauper. Until now? Thoughts?
When it comes to Ritualist, what about the tempo gain of playing two spells on turn 5? The ideal situation would be a 4-cost spell and a 3-cost spell. Or what about tapping out for a 5-drop and leaving the Ritualist as open mana to represent an instant spell? Pauper might not have too many 6 or 7 drops, but this can help you outpace the opponent with midgame spells.
Consider also its use with mana sinks. In green you have Darkthicket Wolf with an admittedly clunky pump cost, or Rootwallas if you like those. Black has its Crypt Rats and Pestilence. But I would look to pair it with red X spells like Rolling Thunder to put a player over the top - those X spells are scaling less and less well as creatures get more efficiently-statted bodies.
Wind is defintely outclassed by Spell Shrivel. Its really rare that +4 doesnt counter the stuff you want, unless its really lategame and then Winds wouldnt need extra support to become maybe better.
Havent played Oasis Ritualist in the end, although i wanted to, I went with Ondu Giant and Wild Wanderer instead. The problem with Ritalist is, that it cant attack or block when you want to ramp with it, which kinda obsoletes the mana advantage it gives you.

This. I tried the Oasis ritualist, but the fact that you cannot use it as a creature when you use it to generate mana, makes it way worse in action than in paper.
