Boggart Brute has been subtly a fairly strong card for its year-plus in my cube, so I'll probably try a black version. This one might be worse since it's not in the same color as other 'can't block' effects, making Menace a little less useful.
I like angler drake, especially since i've been making a conscious effort to try and push the curve up in a cube just a tad. i'm also gonna probably try the black boggart brute unless there's a better 3/black aggro card printed since i've been trying to add a little more support for that as well.
Trueheart Duelist1W
Creature - Human Warrior
Trueheart Duelist can block an additional creature each combat.
Embalm 2W(2W, exile this card from your graveyard: Create a token that is a copy of this creature, except it is a zombie in addition to its other creature types, and it is white instead of any other colours.)
Angler Drake looks pretty sweet. I've been wanting something else in the top end of my blue section that passes the Terminate test. I'm not sure what to cut for it, but I do plan to give it a try.
I like Sun Ce, Young Conqueror a reasonable amount, but think I prefer his cheaper cost over the bigger Angler Drake.
Heh, cost is the only reason I'm not trying Sun Ce first. Good to know you've been liking it, I may try getting a hold of a copy.
Sixth Sense is strictly worse than Keen Sense, and I think I'd rather have this effect in blue.
Something else worth noting is that Archfiend of Ifnir makes -1/-1 counters, which means we probably won't be getting anything involving +1/+1 counters in this set. On the plus side, cycling's back!

i'm a little excited about embalm as a mechanic. while trueheart duelist is just a bear with minor upside twice, hopefully there's one with a relevant etb or large stats. a bear with minor upside twice might even be worth a test.
A bear with minor upside twice is absolutely worth a test. It might not be good enough, but cards that are cheaply costed and function as multiple cards always carry a ton of weight.
Angler Drake is 100% fine, but I think I prefer my top end to have more unique effects like Jetting Glasskite or Jodah's Avenger than a Man-o'-War which we already have like 4 playable variants of.
I'll play Cursed Minotaur if I ever decide to remove Shadow from my Cube, right now I don't have room for it alongside Dauthi Marauder. Trueheart Duelist is cool. A bear with a little upside, not sure how much better being able to replay it makes it. Right now I have very little room at 2 in White from supporting skies, so I don't know if this one will make it in.
Now just settle in for the next week of spoilers being all rares and mythics before we have anything else to talk about, hah.
Also the new art on Gravedigger is sweet, almost makes me wish I played it.
Trueheart Duelist and Angler Drake both seem testable. Drake is probably better than Riverwheel Aerialists, but worse than Jetting Glasskite. I'm not exactly excited for the Duelist, but it seems like a respectable defensive option to shore up a relatively weak cube slot. Might just be overall worse than something like Loyal Cathar, though.
The fact that Trueheart Duelist is an uncommon means I'm not excited about Embalm. If this was Embalm at common, I could see some serious upside, but if a bear with slight upside is typical of Embalm at uncommon? Eh... It's a shame, the full art promo is sweet.
I also wish Angler Drake had a more unique effect.
Technically speaking sixth sense isn't strictly worse. While doubt it will come up all that often changing opponent to player is technically a slight improvement
Obviously it could just be an outlier, but these are the cards to showcase and hype the mechanics.
I mean, it's a 2 for 1 with the front side appropriately costed and the backside only costing one more. That's pretty good, and probably being underrated here.
Yeah, having pondered it a bit I'm with the no-crowd on the Duelist. It will probably never be terrible; a card that is at worst a bear can usually be fine. But the really good bears are the bears with upside that has late-game relevance. This doesn't really.
But it seems like a proper road block against (ground based) aggro. Block two things and trade with one of them and then come back next turn and do it again? Now you are 2 for 1 in terms of cards and have kept them from pressuring your life total in any real way before turn 4? Sounds good. But yeah, this still top-decks as a Balduvian Bears too often in the late game to matter. I think. I could underestimate the free and easy value here.
Miasma Mummy 1B
Creature - Zombie Jackal (C)
When Miasma Mummy enters the battlefield, each player discards a card.
2/2
Interesting discard-outlet for reanimator that also (hopefully) disrupts your opponent? I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention Sibsig Icebreakers, but perhaps coming out a turn earlier and having an acceptable body for its cost could make this relevant?
There was some very minor discussion on Sibsig Icebreakers when DTK was released. For example (but this was not the only instance), I was wondering how to increase (symmetrical) discard outlets in black. In the end, Stronghold Rats was what I went with, though, and it has retained its spot.
Miasma Mummy is interesting but definitely not an auto-include. Its body is definitely more relevant for the cost which is particularly relevant compared to Rotting Rats. I would say it has potential to be considered but would still likely be about a 1.5 by the card evaluation scale used for the Evaluate Everything project (yes, I know it does not have halves).
perhaps my cube lends itself better to grindy games than most of yours, but a significant portion of games comes down to one or two small to mid sized threats getting there so even a 2/2 that can come back is pretty good, especially for a more aggressive deck that has equipment or auras. i'm gonna test the 2/2 and will also definitely tests a 3/3 for 3, a 5/5 for 6, and probably any evasive threat or relevant etb.

Sure there will be games where you have no 3 drop, and they attack into it and you now have a bad turn 3 play, but... eh?

not quite a 3/3 for 3 like i said before, and the back end is kinda expensive.
