Hey all, I'm thinking of adding a rare expansion to my peasant cube. This would be 180 cards of a similar power level to my current average power level that would be used as an optional expansion in case I need to draft with more people, or just if my normal peasant cube is getting stale.
What are some cards that you guys have thought would make good downgrades, or be interesting additions to your own peasant cubes? My only limitation is that I'm sticking to 2 or fewer colors.
Assuming you've already got support for specific archetypes or themes in your cube, that is something to consider. You could either find rares that continue to support those archetypes, so even if you draft with more people, those will still be strong, or if you don't draft the whole cube you still have good density.
An alternative is to use the expansion to add more potential archetypes that you couldn't fit into your current cube, and there might be some interesting rares that enable stuff that your peasant only cards can't currently do. But that could start diluting the strength of your archetypes overall if you aren't drafting the whole cube.
There was a previous thread on the topic, but I couldn't find it. I did however, dig up the Peasant with Rares-thread I started a while back. Perhaps you find something there.
Cross-posting my rare expansion list from the thread JovianHomarid linked to. I wouldn't recommend using Surrakar Spellblade (not good enough) or Rakka Mar, Hornet Queen, Awakening Zone, or Wolfbriar Elemental (too good), but the rest were fine. Pianna is even uncommon already if you include Vintage Masters cards.
We've only drafted with it once, so not a ton of experience, but I seem to remember it being underwhelming. It's possible that's it's better in a more dedicated spells deck.
Galepowder Mage looks like it might be a little too easy to abuse, but Hell's Caretaker seems like perfect power level while giving us a toy we don't currently have. And Goblin Diplomats is the perfect card for the mythical punisher / forced attack deck I really want to exist for some reason.
I run Hell's Caretaker and it is indeed a fun card. It has huge potential, but the fact that it takes a turn to come online, costs four mana, and dies to everything, makes it fine.

I did lose horribly to it when I had a deck with a shortage of removal and my opponent assembled Eternal Witness+Nekrataal+Hell's Caretaker.
