- We're going to open up all the categories at the same time.
- Points are actually tied between option 1 and 2 (each 7 votes), even though there are 2 people that voted for option 2 with exclusion of single entries. I'm going to give the nod to option 2 then, because I know leelue would vote for that even though he didn't vote in the actual poll.
What are the benefits of adding 20 points to every card? It seems like it just exaggerates the difference between your twentieth pick and your twenty-first pick.
Well, there is no 21th pick so it's all in the context of the Top 20.
What is does is that it basically makes the difference between the cards smaller while still appointing a sizeable value to the bottom half of the rank. In practice, this gives a lessened probability that a single voter's pet card on rank 1 will not outrank a card a card that has been voted on by multiple people, but put lower on the list. It's an attempt at reducing anomalies.
Look at it as a way that has a multiplier built in so cards that are voted on more often get an edge.
So the number of voters matters a lot more than the ranking. A card ranked #20 by 4 people will do better than a card ranked #15 by 3 people.
Still, if you have 19 cards down and you are stuck between two very close options to pick which one makes the top 20 list and which one is an unnamed 21st, this really ups the stakes.
Not a lot more. A card ranked 20 by four people (21x4=84) will tie to a card ranked 13 by three people (28x3=84) and lose to anything better than that. It's an interesting puzzle to figure out what should mean more. under the old system a card could be ranked as card 20 by 10 people but that card would lose out to a card ranked at 14 by 3 people. The idea that card number 20 should get 6 times fewer points than the card just a few spaces higher always rubbed me the wrong way. But hey, maybe 20 points extra is too many. I don't know.
I am actually very amazed thst the traditional option w/excluding single entries didn't get picked. I would have assumed that this would have been by far the most immediately appealing option. I have no aversion to option 4 for that matter and would probably like it.
The actual points will be assigned at the end anyway, so we have ~2 weeks to decide if 20 is too much and if we want to go a little lower.
Going for N*1.5 for 1st seems fine, maybe better. Although a part of me would rather assign whole values, and N*1.5 gives 7.5 points to #1 in a Top 5 :p.
Not sure if we need a new poll. Maybe I can start a poll if people want another poll?

We don't have to come to a conclusion yet (10 days left), but so far I think going with N*1.5 is the right middle ground for scoring this year.
