I like Civilized Scholar more, since an 0/2 defender is kinda useless and Scholar being both a threat and a looter is nice. Scholar is pretty much a 2/1 looter that turns into a 5/1 when you want it to, which is pretty nice. Probably not necessary since you only need so many looters, but I feel like that's a bit more valuable than the 0/2 defender even if you get to immediately loot.

It's an 0/1 but it's interesting. I think I need to play with it, seems like it could do some work. I am imagining games were I just use him as a regular looter but they are forced to keep something back not to suddenly take 5.
Probably, if you don't mind silver border. Not sure if I'm keen on checking the artists names on every card in play every time I play something. I guess for OCD-people with all the same basics it pretty much reads "landfall-untap".
And Jovian Homarid was probably referring to the claim that the scholar is a 2/1 (which it is not).
Jeskai Elder is also a thing, I suppose but that is probably comparable to the new 1/3 one which requires non-returnable to have been cast. Their conditionality keeps them below Fetch and I think I agree that for black-bordered alternatives, Civilised Scholar is probably better.
I think it's close to a staple in the forum here, but my experience has been pretty close to Bdog's. It's... fine. I don't play Abzan Falconer type dudes, so it's just coming in at face value, or with some haphazard Gore-House Chainwalker synergy.
At 5cmc it's not a high priority for aggro decks, and it's a pretty mediocre defensive presence for midrange or control. Yes, it works... sometimes... but it's definitely been feeling cuttable (even at 600 cards!)

Any board presence you have is greatly improved (bolstered, if you may) when you drop this guy, and he's not awful as a 4/5 on an empty board, either. Also, he's really fun.
Now, for another really fun card that might not always cut it on power level, but is owed a look for its uniqueness:
Bonus Q: Have you ever visited a haunted house?

I imagine it's tough to consistently win if you are required to only have 1 creature to make this anything but a dead card. It was great in its limited format, but its limited format was not great overall (read: one of the worst ever) so it's tough to translate that.
I live near Salem, MA, so Halloween gets crazy here and every house seems haunted. It's pretty fun to go there on actual halloween and see all the crazy costumes, as long as you're not expecting to get into a bar/restaurant and you don't have to drive through downtown salem since the roads are crazy.
I really like it. There's a breed of creature light decks that really like having their individual small value creatures stabilize them/require answers/make actual trades.
I'm under the impression that innistrad was lauded as a good limited format. One of the worst ever is a tall order when we had coldsnap once upon a time
Yeah, AVR was one of the worst. Black was pretty much unplayable, there were only two good color combinations, and you literally couldn't take anything over 2 drops if you wanted to win. There weren't any cool/build-around decks, the removal was awful which made the bombs that much more egregious, and feel-bad mechanics like Homicidal Seclusion which were either you win or they deal with your creature were no fun. It was awful, and like you say Innistrad was one of the best which really magnified how awful AVR was. I didn't play a lot of coldsnap, but from what I understand at least there were interesting things going on in coldsnap, or at least more interesting than 'play something on t2 or die'.
I had it in for a while and it was just too narrow. Even control decks need speed-bump creatures like Omenspeaker, "non-creatures" like looters, and multi-creature spells like Eldrazi Skyspawner and Talrand's Invocation.
It definitely CAN work, but didn't happen enough to justify an ongoing cube slot.
Undoubtedly one of black's best one-for-one kill spells, I get the sense that it isn't as popular as it once was. I've cut it for two main reasons: a) I wanted to reduce the quantity of good removal available, and b) I wanted to purge it for the "nonblack" clause as I feel like that's something they've trended away from in recent years, and I agree with that decision. I got rid of all of those effects recently as I didn't like how their effectiveness could vary so much based on which deck you got paired up against.
Bonus Q: How many effects in your cube work better or worse against a specific color ("nonblack" clause, fear, intimidate, etc.)?
There are a million kill spells available for black, and while Doom Blade is good it's one of a million doom blade variants (lol) and probably (maybe?) the worst. The doom blade creatures are generally better since they aren't ever completely dead, and there are other better/interestingly different kills spells to run.
That being said, Doom Blade never feels out of place in a peasant cube since it's cheap efficient removal. I could see not running it, but would never bat an eye when its passed in packs.
I think cards that check the color of opponent's cards are extremely terrible for limited, so I avoid them is at all possible. I have zero fear/intimidate, and no "nonblack" removal or sunlance.

Before I forget, I should mention that part of my impression of homicidal seclusion comes from a game where it was alongside genju of the spires.

How many of the Tarkir +1+1 counter theme cards do people run?

I may re-add it at some point, considering I am thinking about giving CGR the axe for power reasons... but I digress.

Having this is play with your only creature being Darksteel Sentinel was pretty bonkers... or Pelakka Wurm... or Jetting Glasskite...
It just wasn't drafted consistently enough.... it has poor average case scenarios...
Not a bad card, not a great card, and I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for running it.

I forgot to mention that the card has fairly narrow appeal. When it's good it's wild, but it is an awful way to spend 5 mana to do nothing at times.
