Of the two, I probably like Holdout Settlement more. (It's worth pointing out that you can tap a creature you just played to activate the ability.) It's a land that can make any color that doesn't come into play tapped.
I want to like Crumbling Vestige. It seems like a bad Tendo Ice Bridge. The EtB trigger is good. I'm just not sure the land is good enough unless <> matters a lot. I'll probably pick up a foil and stash it in case it gets good.
Any colourless land makes C now so it's not much of a "thing".
Honestly if we get any playable C costing creatures, I'll just sleeve some wastes for people to put in their decks like the other basics.
I actually like Crumbling Vestige more because it's a possible color-fixer for aggresive decks as opposed to mid-range or control decks. It just makes it a little easier to play a 1cc or 2cc creature in your off color for those aggro decks. For example, if you're a Boros deck with a Jackal Pup and Soltari Trooper in your opener, you can cast them both on curve with Crumbling Vestige and either a Plains or Mountain. There's not really another non-basic that does that in Peasant.
Gemstone mine and shakily-legal city of brass do.
Crumbling vestige is the land you play when you need to play it. It could work, on second look.
Unfortunately, malone, that scenario doesn't work if you have pup and borderland marauder or elite vanguard and soltari trooper. Still... it could be a thing.
Also, major meh at the tap lands. Meh, Wizards, MEH.

Vestige is actually decent, I'd probably use it in most 2-color aggressive decks. Settlement feels worse than Shimmering Grotto, which nobody ever uses or should use.
Vestige seems like it could also be interesting in combination with the karoo lands, but it's still worse than tendo ice bridge. I suppose it's at least an option as an extra type of that effect.
Quite a few new eligible spoilers today from the Mothership. Comments on a few interesting cards below:
Spatial Contortion doesn't seem like enough upside for needing to have <> mana. Shoulder to Shoulder seems overcosted, but I wouldn't be surprised if this plays better than it looks. Reckless Bushwhacker has a lot of upside to me. It's pretty bland normally, but that Surge ability feels almost as good as Goblin Heelcutter.
EDIT: Upon review, does not compare greatly with Goblin Bushwhacker, which is not a great card either. Scion Summoner looks like another pretty good option, especially since we are so devoid (ahem) of green 3s.
Adding Wastes to "splash" a Cspell seems so awful since there's so few playable incidental ways to get C from other sources... there would REALLY need to be some super-pushed colorless card for me to consider it.
I think people might be undervaluing Shoulder to Shoulder. Lashknife Barrier was a sleeper for a long time, but is now played in a lot of lists. White-based aggro decks lack the reach of red burn, so spells that improve your board state while replacing themselves seem pretty good to me.
EDIT: I also like having more incidental ways to support "counters matter" without having cards that are completely worthless outside the archetype.
The Bushwhacker seems worse than Lightning Mauler by a good margin. I'd say it's probably also worse than Crimson Mage.
I like bushwhacker, works pretty good in a token deck or a deck where you are going wide and need a little pump and another body.. just my opinion, never been extremely disappointed with it.
Not really interested in any of the cards spoiled so far. Hoping for something a little different. Looking forward to what other surge cards are printed.
well we have some spoilers so i'm back from the blind eternities for the time being.
i think the new bushwhacker is better than the old one tbh. a consistently better body, since a 2/1 haste for 3 is so much better than a 1/1 for 1. the surge cost isn't RR which makes life easier as well. it definitely has a home for me.
Shoulder to Shoulder is probably the best card of the lot so far. It's either going to be quite good or pretty awful. Cantrips in white are a rare thing and it plays well with the slow march of "+1/+1 counters matter" cards seeping into a lot of cubes around here.
That's not to say I'm going to jump on it, but I'll keep it in mind going forward.
Lashknife barrier is always just sort of "fair and balanced" until it starts being broken and nullifying cards like flames of the firebrand killing your tokens or making it impossible for your opponent's tokens to contribute in trades. +1/+1 counters don't do that. It also works before creatures are down. And on all of them. And "forever".
I do see what you mean in spirit but I don't think you can hollow out the breadth of applications lashknife barrier has and think that it's still going to be good.
You still want to hope that when you have an opening to play shoulder to shoulder matches up with when it's advantageous to play it. It just has such a poor set of lower-case scenarios and its middle case scenario is not much more appealing than cards like sandcrafter mage.
To be fair, there is no white card in the game that gives +1+1 counters and draws cards.
It's kind an obvious difference, but Shoulder to Shoulder pumps up power while Lashknife Barrier doesn't. I don't know if that makes it a better offensive card than Lashknife Barrier, but it makes it better at sheer damage output, which could potentially be awesome.
Holdout Settlement seems like the kind of card that could find a home. It's not ramp but it is solid 5 colour fixing that doesn't cost mana.

I wonder how far they'll go with this colorless requirement for cards. I feel like there's a lot of design space for these.

Shoulder to Shoulder is cutesy for people forcing cards like Abzan Falconer but bad otherwise
Reckless Bushwhacker seems worse than the old Bushwhacker, which nobody ever considers
Walker of the Wastes is not a Cube card
Scion Summoner is decent, but worse than both other colors' 2-body 3-drops as well as the older green Eldrazi-makers at 2 and 4 mana.

I think this is a good evaluation.
I don't think it's worse than Crimson Mage, considering it's a pretty awful card.
