Question to the Peasant community: should there be a separate Peasant+ discussion thread? For anyone who happens to not know the term, Peasant+ just means the silver-bordered restriction is broken and rares have been added at the cube owner's discretion. In my playgroup, it started with a cycle of fetchlands and became a slippery slope that we tumbled straight down... one of our worst offenses was Swans of Bryn Argoll, which I've had to draw a hard line at. Despite my experience, I don't feel like anyone's Peasant+ cube is so far above the power level of a normal peasant cube that they can't participate in the threads. Honest opinions welcome, no offense will be taken.
A pet peeve of mine is definitely when rares come up in the main peasant thread. I don't believe in the practice of adding rares (Am I alone in this?) but it's surely a fascinating subject that deserves a thread. I do believe some relevant threads have already been created though.
As a wiley old-fashioned cube veteran, please to all you damn kids with your fidget spinners and rares and mythics, don't forget to label your cube as Peasant+! 😜
If you can see a gold symbol, then it doesn't go in my cube. But it's also gotta be uncommon somewhere. Bonus if it also has a promo printing.
So I find fun workarounds, like my Prophetic Bolt that I got altered. I guess I could do the same with Pianna, Nomad Captain, but he got bumped outta my radar about a year later with Soltari Champion, which conveniently has a black symbol already.
So far I see no reason to split this small community. Most of the rares that get played are about on par with peasant and it's not like the peasant+ stuff is drowning out the peasant topics.
If you play with people who play Magic for fun you'll say "I've got this cube, it's cool because it's only got commons and uncommons in it" and the then they'll complain about the rares in your cube and say they are too powerful, but they're going to be totally fine with Mum because she has a silver symbol. True story.
It's not about people being mean, it's about people orchestrating a prolonged harassment campaign on top of the usual sexist bull***** that's going on anyway. Let's not pretend this is someone throwing their toys out of the pram.
It doesn't even matter if you cared about her cosplay either, that's just about the worst reason for a content creator to leave a community.
The Prof has a good video on the whole thing which also shows some of the vile stuff that's been going on. I'd recommend watching that before being sarcastic.
While I don't really care about cosplaying, I do care about treating people with respect (which I sometimes fail at, but actively work at making a priority in my life) and the guy in question seems to be looking for stuff to complain about under the guise of it being a problem, as if her actions are predatory or something because she's hot and dresses up as characters and sometimes her breasts and skin are exposed. Give me a break!
Even if she is actively taking advantage of the fact that she's attractive, who cares, or rather *why* should we care? I see no problem with recognizing strengths and qualities that make cosplaying for her more popular, go and take advantage of those genes if you got them. No one ever said 'That piece of ***** Yao Ming, taking advantage of the fact that NBA teams want to pay freakishly-tall-and-athletic once-in-a-lifetime players, who does he think he is?' because that would be insane, and the only difference here is that the issue people are having involve sexuality in the most basic way i.e. she is attractive.
No one is forced to give her money, and if people didn't want the service then she wouldn't get support. If she's actually crying about needing support, then let her look bad on her own without inserting commentary about her intentions, and if people still choose to support her then that's on them and not her unless she is lying or deceiving or cheating them, which does not seem to be the case. And unless she's doing anything explicitly sexually inappropriate in front of minors and non-consenting adults--which I'm pretty sure isn't the case, unless we are are going to argue about cleavage and skin, which isn't worth it ever because we're arguing ethics and not the law--there's nothing wrong with what she's doing.
I don't get the issues people have with her. People are choosing to give her money, so people get mad about it? She is asking for money, so, boo her? She's attractive, so she shouldn't be cosplaying in magic? Huh?!
I completely understand the anger because of the hate and vitrol involved by the content creator in question, but it does us no good here in this small community. The best things to do in these scenarios is to: 1) lead by example, and 2) not shut the door on other individuals changing when they are given a chance to. The content creator and people like him/that support him want that anger, maybe not consciously but it allows them to go, 'See? The same happens to us!' in terms of anger or hate or etc received.
Not that I think n00b agrees with the mindset--I'm sure it's due to a misunderstanding of all the facts involved, in which case that 20 minute video by the professor is worth the watch/listen--but in the same way people helped me change certain point of views I had about a different subject when I was ready to listen, I'm willing to work with people to change theirs if they're ready to listen and be open minded too. Believe me, it's awesome that we agree on this and I have infinite respect for anyone who isn't a disgusting pig and doesn't consciously support it even after knowing all facts, but we should explain our own thoughts before we extinguish others'.
It's important to note how much of a hypocrite the content creator is. He calls out sprankle for essentially manipulating (paraphrasing) her supporters into paying her due to her being attractive, pointing out that average and less-attractive individuals would not have so much success for their patreons. He uses this platform to convince his followers that: 1) for some reason, sprankle is bad/morally-and-ethically abject for doing this, and 2) they're not the 'loser, beta cucks' (his words) that he calls out for supporting her because they're better than that. And he seemingly thinks it's OK because people agree with him, when in reality it's either flies to ***** or the type of people he manipulated into feeling that way.
Maybe those people supporting her appreciate the craft and the art of it? Maybe those people go to a lot of GPs and love seeing the cosplays in person?
Maybe those people are supporting her because it's about her gender, sexually-inclined or not? Unless she's literally stealing from them, individuals are allowed to donate $5 because 'she's hot' and I can't--or rather, shouldn't--say ***** because it would be as ridiculous for calling people out when they order pizza because I think fatness is despicable. (Which I don't, at all, just a (prob bad) analogy.)
And yes, it might be fair to say, How could he manipulate them strictly through youtube? How is that on him? But we all know some of the type of people who seek magic. They're awkward, they may not have a lot of social interaction, they may have never had a gf or a kiss, I don't want to be unfair but I don't think it's a stretch to say they make up a real percent of magic players. When someone as well-spoken as the content creator who is like a lot of them physically in some way says this ***** with force and conviction and (all things considered) intelligently (sounding), they see a public figure confirming some thoughts that may be still in their infancy and, because his channel is a single podium and not a debate, they don't have anyone playing devil's advocate.
This is not to say those individuals who are awkward are bad or wrong or whatever--not at all they're human beings, to hate the awkward is to hate myself--but that they are vulnerable to opinion of their idols/heros/etc and his isn't a new one to them, at least in some form. It's how a lot of people get manipulated online, due to irrational people feeling strongly about something and saying it can only be one way without having any capability to play devil's advocate to their own prejudices. First the content creator confirms that only super attractive women have success with cosplaying professionally...then it's calling out other content creators for their issues that he doesn't agree with...then what's next? Is it political agenda? Violence? Hatred? It's scary, and it's been happening in the united states for probably longer than most people are aware for due to the fairly-recent of mainstream internet-embracing.
I'm appreciative of this community for a lot of reasons, and while I know brevity isn't my strong suit, I hope these rants aren't too off-the-cuff/way-too-much. The bar for being a decent human being is low, and I feel like it's easy to be manipulated into thinking it's much lower or it doesn't exist but it's also possible to talk about why that bar is higher than perceived, and that it's also easy to think it's your own idea and you aren't being manipulated by man-with-mic.
No worries. This is a case where a lot of people seem to have an agenda to spread wrong information or deny what's going on, it's easy to skim a thread or two and get the wrong impression. That's why I linked the professor's video.

Totally, and also for me length=/=aggression, I just hate what has been going on in America and this is an extension of it.
I'll never understand why people care so much about what other people do when those things aren't affecting them in the least little bit and they aren't hurting anyone. Case in point, a cosplayer has success in that trade and opens a Patreon where fans can donate to support such a thing. While I, personally, really enjoy content (pics, posts, articles, interviews) by that cosplayer, I actively choose not to support that Patreon. That is my choice. Others also have the same choice to support and that choice can be made for whatever reason they want. Maybe it's because they find the cosplayer attractive. Maybe it's because they're just generous. It could be 100 different things. The point is, they have every right to be able to support whatever Patreon they wish. I will never understand why someone would care so much that this cosplayer is able to make a living "playing dress-up" that they need to make YouTube videos complaining about it. And not just complaining about it, but blowing it completely out of proportion and saying some really hurtful and messed up things about the person in question. I just don't get that short of aggression at all.
And, for me at least, I apply this to most things in society. Let people do what makes them happy as long as that thing doesn't hurt anyone else. This is the question I tend to ask people when they start ranting about how <insert any controversial topic> is bad or wrong. Why do you care? How does that affect you and your day to day life? For a lot of us, it's hard enough to just be happy in this life without someone taking a dump all over you and the things you love. Why would anyone want to make someone that unhappy? Rule number one in life: Don't be a dick. It's really not that difficult.
I reserve the right to hate on anyone for liking suicide squad though.
In all seriousness, I don't have a problem with people disliking certain things and saying so. I have a problem when that dislike turns into something malicious.
I've been waiting on my order of cards for my cube to get to my place and it's driving me mad not being able to update and play with my cube right yet!
So my new project
After doing this cube, a combo cube, a custom cards cube, and a cube of bad cards
Is to try a cube with only two colors: Black and white.
I'm going to see if it works, at all, and I'm going to go all in on protection, wraths, and edicts.
I should be able to do both a lifegain theme and an auras theme with these two colors as well. On top of any obvious choices like tokens or reanimator. Both of those strategies could be kept in check by just the rampant use of wraths.
Lastly, so combat can actually exist, I would have to include a bunch of artifacts. So this could double as an artifact-centric cube but with no blue.
How did the bad cards cube go? Did you manage to balance it to where it was fun beyond the first few "haha Karplusan Giant is SO bad haha"-moments? Was it worth the effort? Do you have a link?
I'm kinda interested in making a bad cards cube, but I worry about balance and gameplay. Thought maybe I could select a few floor/ceiling cards as a yardstick. I.e. no card should be first pickable over [card A] and every card should be first pickable over [card B]. Would that work?

Shut the hell up if you seriously think hate speech, stalking, harassment, misogyny and transphobia are just 'being mean' and not worth caring about.
