I like Scout. It doesn't dominate any games the way that other reasonable CC-costed spells like Strangleroot Geist, Knight of Meadowgrain or even Blood Knight can, but 3/1s for 2 get damage in, and when its mana is awkward, there are worse things than coming down turn 2 as a cantripping lava spike and later as a Blade of the Sixth Pride.
i feel like the delay on lat-nam's legacy, even at instant speed, makes it worse than see beyond in some ways. and you shuffle a card away after drawing for see beyond.
Angler and reanimation not working great together is actually good in that it makes graveyard enablers less narrow since reanimator and delve decks will both want them. Plus Angler is a decent enough reanimation target itself if it gets binned early somehow.
So I wanted to make some changes to my blue and look at cards that were under-performing and potential replacements.
Cards that have been under-performing: Hour of Need (If this card was any color but blue it would have been awesome) Curiosity (Often a can-trip like Ponder/Preordain is just better)
Hello there. I'm making a cube for the first time and I'm currently having a hard time picking my cards for red. Are Mogg Flunkies, Hardened Berserker, or Qal Sisma Behemoth considered to be any good?
There are two 3 power 2 drops without a real drawback (borderland marauder, gore-house chainwaler) and like a half dozen other cards that are good enough to not need the flunkies.
Behemoth didn't play well in my first and only test.
Qal Sisma Behemoth saw play at my last draft (first time he was included in the cube). I haven't gotten to ask how he went but I did see him making the other player groan having to deal with it. I'm going to continue testing him with some optimism.
@Arbor: Phantasmal Bear is a guy I'm testing at the moment. No word on weather he's good or not but I expect he should be for the deck that wants him. Should I be including Cloudfin Raptor before him though?
Well the difference between 4 and 5 toughness is important. Also, Angler fits it's color better, I don't think green want or needs a delve guy, but I might be wrong.
I can only speak for paupercube environment, but angler is the only big guy in black for a reasonable cost, except Golgari Longlegs
I also ran Phantasmal Bear for quite a while, but its drawback that it cant be targeted by your own effects makes it really bad. (no equip, no pump, no selfbouce )
And I dont like Stab wound, most of them time its just a real bad sorcery speed CC3 removal, or when enchanted on a big guy it still a threat that races you. And the few times it hits a good target like a 2/4 you cant attack because they block or just bounce or sac their dude.
I didn't like Mandrills without a lot of dedicated archetype support, but that's mostly due to Green having few non-permanents worth playing. Angler works more along black's gameplan.
It's been 10 months since the 2014 Peasant Power Rankings. I just got my PhD, so I'm going to be traveling the world in celebration in a month, and won't be home until December. Before I leave, I would like (if possible) to do the power rankings of 2015. Too ambitious?
Congrats on the phd, bud! I got my terminal masters a couple years back which nearly broke me, I can't imagine a phd. I doubt people will have objections with you spearheading the power rankings. I personally question just how beneficial the rankings are anymore, but regardless will participate.
The only reason I'm hesitant is because of the time constraint. Although I'm not leaving home (Thailand, here we come!) until June 18th, I'm going to be partially busy during the time leading up to then, which gives about 3 weeks of actual available time to commit to the project. Maybe I'll just wait until December and do it then. It could be my Christmas present to all the lovely folks here at MTGSalvation. It might not be super helpful for "veterans" or whatever we're calling ourselves, but for new folks to the site or new people to cubing might find it helpful!
I certainly found the old power rankings valuable when I was creating my cube, but with the Evaluate Everything project starting up (even if it's in its infancy) I feel like it's less useful than it was previously. In addition, I don't think there's been much in the way of "meta advancement" to require an annual update.
EDH Decks:
- Reya Dawnbringer // - Mistform Ultimus // - Balthor the Defiled // - Urabrask the Hidden // - Mirri, Cat Warrior

Cards that have been under-performing:
Hour of Need (If this card was any color but blue it would have been awesome)
Curiosity (Often a can-trip like Ponder/Preordain is just better)
potential replacements:
Phantasmal Bear/Gossamer Phantasm (Frost Walker has been doing very well)
Extra counterspell? (which would you recommend?)
Wash out
So thoughts on any of these cards?

Hardened Berserker is a subpar creature, enough below the acceptable level to not make me care about its mana-ramp upside.
Behemoth is the opposite: huge, with a manageable drawback. I haven't sleeved him up since DTK came out, but definitely see the appeal.

I would like to know how Hooting Mandrils has performed. Also, for those of you running the angler but not the mandrills, why not?
