That's what im talkin' about.

I cube a good deal, but often infrequently. I'll have a month and a half of 3 short cubes a week, then the next 2-3 months there will be almost no cubing. As much as I like to cube, there are plenty of other games I like to play as well, and often the people I play with can't commit the 2+ hours needed to make cubing worth it.

I'm very similar. When I cube 8 man, we cube nonstop for a month or so but as we all play competitive Modern and some of us Legacy, our nights with magic vary from tournament prep to jamming cube or EDH. thankfully I do cube with my siblings as I have 3 siblings who play so I 4 man cube once a week every week after family dinner.

This is a pretty typical issue with cube communities--most people don't have an online group to play with, and people are people, so they want to participate but their opinions are based off one match or just ideas or things other people said. It may sound accusatory or derogatory towards some but cube has been around for a long time and so have those people. It's just a fact of life.

This is also where the monthly 'join our xmage cube discord' post comes into play. Not a huge fan of advertising on these forums, but we regularly draft and there are people who draft their own cubes every night if not most nights. The thread with an invite link is in the main part of the cube forums, if you want to increase the amount you draft this is a *great* way. Purplemuraski drafts with us along with other forum members, it's a good time.

I've probably draft 40-60 times over the course of the past year from the comfort of my own home with a low-demand software, and that number in comparison to others is on the lower end. If you want to cube consistently with your own cube or homemade/non-MODO cubes, this is currently the best way by far. The *only* reason I haven't cubed more is because, like purple, I just love games in general and never stick with one thing, but it's really that easy to get only to casually draft 40-60 times by this point in the year.

I must also admit to be under-cubing. Although I try to be clear about when I am theorycrafting ("This card sounds good because..") and when I am talking about actual experience ("This card has over-performed for me lately").

Did anyone try Grim Strider? Could it be a choice over Gurmag Angler?

I understand the Fish is better and goes in more decks, but for precicely that reason? If I want a payoff for a low-curve black deck, then the Angler works well there as a 1-2 mana 5/5, but Strider will be a 4 mana 3/3 or worse in so many of the slower decks that it will more often drift to the deck that "deserves" it.

I've been lucky to cube with my friends once a month for the last two years now. We all started back in Ravnica but life eventually got in the way so it's nice to meet up every month to catch up and have some fun. None of us attend any other Magic related events, I'm an avid board gamer now and cube has been a great way to play Magic casually.

1) Cubing is also not the only source of information about a card. All cubes play out a little differently, so it's kind of hard to draw universal conclusions anyway. Someone who drafts a lot and has a good idea how their cube works doesn't need to be cubing all the time to have a fairly good idea of which new cards work for their cube.

2) I'm not convinced that a four mana 6/6 is the kind of pay off you want in the deck that "deserves" it. If you reliably be down to one card in hand by turn four, you're probably filling the yard fast enough for Angler anyway.

I can't count how many times a card has vastly under or overperformed over the years. Especially weird ones, like vehicles or good auras.

So, theory only gets you so far.

Definitely. It's close to impossible to get a real sample size that could be considered accurate with a card while playing in person or just playing regularly in general.

I play a ton of 1v1 c/ube (so, grid) with a couple of my friends, but actually getting them all in the same room is quite rare. Never mind a full 8.

Hey guys, I'm looking rejuvenate my cube, and give it the option to expand into 360 (running 180 at the moment). I was curious to what were your ratios/percentages of each color's creature and non creature spells. Example would be: Green 60-70% creatures and Blue 40% creatures. I find that at Peasant, a lot of the better spells are tacked on to creatures, such as Flickerwisp over Cloudshift.

Creature percentages:
W: 58%
U: 35%
B: 44%
R: 47%
G: 62%

note: this excludes token making spells

W: 67%
U: 41% (and I tried to put more)
B: 51%
R: 54%
G: 64%

I would have to say I am happy with the degree to which I have managed to balance variation between colours. Though, I could probably afford to remove a token producer or two in white.

Question that came up when discussing Meteor Golem in the M19 thread:

"Given how expensive they are to cast, what does a card have to do to be worth CUbing if it costs 6+ mana? Does it have to impact the board some AND have great stats? Can it just impact the board a bunch? Can it just be a stats monster?"

Really interested to try and find the line here, because I am always interested in finding respectable cards that are worth their weight for any potential ramp/reanimation decks.

If your opponent can play effectively ignoring your 6+ drop, it's not worth playing imo. Pelakka Wurm, Trostani's Summoner, and Sentinel of the Eternal Watch are all very hard to ignore on effectively every board state. There are a good number of board states where your opponent doesn't really care about Meteor Golem, so it gets a pass from me. Additionally, if it trades 1 for 1 with removal, it should be relevant enough that it must be answered with removal.
