so nobody interested in discussing the fringe stuff? everyone exhausted from the previous posts or is everybody on timeout lol?
building the T3 I (re)discovered a bunch of interesting stuff. nothing Tier1 worthy ofc, but maybe still interesting for downpowered cubes.
First the mentioned Kor interaction. It even works in-color with cards like Wall of Resistance. Too bad there are only 2 Kor at common right now.
Cards I think are reasonably interesting:
Drelnoch unless it gets removed directly it seems quite good. With some sort of pump it can get quite scary. Dreamspoiler Witches with a bunch of cheap spells it can be devastating in cubes with some amount of x/1s. Iirc it was pretty good in lorwyn limited as well. Dead Ringers probably the worst wording of all magic (besides illusionary mask) and not oracle rewording whatsoever. But hitting 2 creatures of the same color isnt hard to do and double removal for 5 is good. Quarry Hauler was noticed but dismissed in the akh spoiler season, but already pretty solid in a deck that just runs something like Travel Preparations or any creature that comes with at least 2 +1+1 counters or more Ivy Elemental Ethersworn Shieldmage rated bad in evaluation and dismissed as artifact dependent card, but its an artifact itself, so its a pretty solid combat trick/pseudoremoval on its own
also potentially interesting are the Chromatic Sphere variations. They are solid fixing, replace themselves and open some amount of interesting artifact synergies, especially in white. Leonin SquireTrusty Packbeast
I know I run a UW Artifact aggro deck is MTGO Pauper and yea I love ethersworn sheildmage but i could see him as a cool option in a pauper cube as a fog/removal spell.
Drelnoch is one of my favorite cards and I actually have a casual deck that stars the tentacle yeti and a few other off attackers with pump spells. I could easily see this being included in a pauper cube with someone's U/G section featured the saboteurs archetype of attackers that draw cards or have on hit effects.
Quarry Hauler why do you need creatures with 2 or more +1/+1 counters to run this? It doesn't double them so it is irrelevant if there is one or 2 +1/+1 counters on it.
the combat damage is dealt at once to the Kor which then triggers single point of damage for each activation to the targeted creature, its not triggered like one chunk of combat damage.
Actually it is since it is a replacement effect and the damage is still combat damage so it happens simultaeously as one chunk. (Similiarly redirection a bolt 3 times will also trigger enrage just once)
For comparison check here
Still a neat little interaction though.
Drelnoch actually came up in our lot card draft (basically buing a lot and draft it) and the guy who drafted it had it out 2 games the first was 2 hits and a block. The second time it was one hit and he ate a removal spell (Nature's Way). So in the right circumstances it can do some work :D.
Aside from that never played any of those cards in a limited environment. Would love to see your new cube and see what you came up with to include those.
hm ok i misread the hauler. each kind of counter, not each counter. so it doesnt double. yeah, then its not good enough.
no comparison link there. since ill play the cube on xmage the program will play it correctly. makes the interaction worse though, but still interesting. no t2 potential then though.

Slivers could be really interesting with the old slivers having all slivers have... if you get into some sort of mirror match
too bad they "reworked" aka destroyed what made slivers slivers in the last set. just another example how disconnected r&d actually is. Or I guess they wanted to finally kill the popularity, since they put sliver queen on reserved in the first place... /rant
anyway, global sliver effect plays either pretty interesting or horrible even only running a bunch of changelings can definitely be pretty annoying against the sliver deck.
i try to draft/playtest it soon.

Lol, just got let out of time out.
Drelnoch is real cool, love it. I'll have to try and shove it into my cube.
Dream Spoiler Witches is also neat. Spell matters is a neat archetype and I like this avenue for multiple creature kills over something like Pestilence. I'll have to try and shove this one in mine too.
Dead Ringers I had in my cube, and then I took it out for Ashes to Ashes since it never got main decked. Now that I've added more ramp into the cube, I think I'm going to add it back into mine. Big dumb Simic 4 mana 5/5's is the best deck in my cube, so cards like these can two-fer those decks. 5 mana may be hard to get to sometimes but if it kills 2 5/5's that seems worth it. Plus, I have a foil of it.
Quarry Hauler seems cool. Keep in mind it also can double up -1/-1 tokens, and can give an Undying creature like Butcher Ghoul +2/+2. You want cards with the graft keyword, and cards like Undying Evil, Serrated Arrows, and Otherworldly Journey and Fume Spitter. Are some of those cards too good for your cube? Sorry if they are. Maybe you could make all of your pump +1/+1 counter based?
At worst, it's just a 4 mana 4/3 which isn't completely terrible.
Are the mana rocks and signets I have sufficient to support ramp? Do I have good ones, and are there enough of them?
What are some good payoffs for them? Is something like Scour From Existence or Disintegrate or the various xU counter spells worth drafting off-color signets and cards like sisay's ring for?

Just run more Eldrazi and green fatties my man. I wouldn't consider Scour From Existence a payoff, more than just an extremely costly and tempo-negative answer to anything, like a "break in case of emergency" glass. You have better answers in all colors, but this one saves you from basically anything.
When I was trawling through Enchantments I found Gaea's Touch. Does anyone reckon that this is any good?
I think it's worst in terms of power than Tinder Wall, but powerful in a vacuum. I think Wall of Roots, Cultivate, Werebear and friends are probably better in this environment. In terms of mana production it's a better green version of Vessel of Volatility. I doubt there are many enough if any forest synergies. And big mana decks seem to be lacking a certain something, especially when removal is good.

Gaea's Touch seems pretty good. I've never seen it before, must be one of those 'paper Pauper' cards. Not only is it an Explore on a stick, but it's also free so it can build a storm count or allow you a 4+ mana swing on the turn you pop it and make 2 land drops. It may be a little too good.
It would be pretty good if your cube heavily supported Landfall, too. That way that 0/1 white bobcat thing would be a 4/5, and adventuring gear could make it an 8/9.
I'll have to consider adding it to my cube.
I've found the opposite. In trying to buff green I took out some of the ramp from the initial version of my cube and put in as many 4 mana 5/5's as possible. This had the result of making simic decks the best since they had access to 7 Gurmag anglers, cantrips, and adequate protection for them. So big mana green stuff does have the potential to get out of hand, I don't think it's lacking anything really.
Are the mana rocks and signets I have sufficient to support ramp? Do I have good ones, and are there enough of them?

Also you're missing Cultivate and the 1 CMC elves and Land Auras, although I suppose that's a conscious decision.
Those are all good ideas. Monstrous, Adapt, and the transform creatures are all neat, as are the cycling ones. I'll have to look through all of the rest of them too, thanks for the ideas. I was thinking about some Flash creatures myself, to get mid-sized or big ones you usually have to pay a premium, and they're exciting. No one expects a 5/6 on the end of your turn.
I support Splice Onto Arcane in my cube, so Kodama's Reach is the same card as Cultivate except with better art and it's Arcane.
I'm missing some of the normal 1 mana ramp elves for a few reasons. I didn't spend $8 in store credit on an Elves of Deep Shadow to not use it, so I view that as a stand-in for Llanowar Elves. I also hate the original Llanowar Elves art, Fyndhorn Elves looks like *****, and Elvish Mystic is soulless PhotoShop garbage.
I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to art. None of the playmats I've found have been satisfactory, so I had one made with L'Absinthe by Edgar Degas on it, lol.
I'll save you the rant about how I don't think that art is subjective and that PhotoShop makes art lesser.
And Heart Warden is just a better card since you can sac it for a card. Maybe not in constructed Pauper where you need to begin the Elves fission reaction on turn 2, but in cube you can afford to wait a turn for the added utility. Additionally, I found a foil one that I spent $7 on.
I've considered the Arbor Elf druid that untaps 3 lands when you have Threshold, but I don't want to have to make a bunch of changes to support Threshold.
Fertile Growth is in there because Carl Critchlow is my favorite artist, and it's nicer looking than Utopia Sprawl while also not being a $20 foil.
I suppose you could then ask me the question, "Well then, why not run both Fertile Growth and Utopia Sprawl, and both Cultivate and Kodama's Reach? Etc." and my answer to that is that besides for art considerations, I just found other cards more interesting, or the creator originally had them in but I took them out in order to make green more big dumb 4 mana 5/5 centric and less ramp focused.
I'm trimming that back a little since the deck with 7 Gurmag Anglers in it is too good.
Sorry for the prolonged absence! Work picked up, I got frustrated with some stuff, and I lost internet access at home for a while on account of a move. Humphrey, I'm afraid I won't be able to look at Tier 3 until tonight, and doing that during spoiler season is a dangerous game, but I will say that the idea is actually pretty exciting to me and I look forward to looking at it.
Out of curiosity, are those cards that you listed for general Cube consideration, or for Tier 3? I don't think any of them are good enough for regular Cubes, but I don't want to type out why if that's not the conversation that you're interested in having.

My 450 Card Pauper Cube is going through major renovations. Feedback appreciated!
Hello friends, I've been lurking theese pages for quite a time now and tried to participate a little from time to time (under an ancient account). I own a (wacky) Pauper cube and play it with friend(s) every now and then.
It's also been a while since I had an idea to contribute to the community and its discussions. It all started when Wizards had a poll for what the next cube should be and a pauper cube list showed up, with mixed feelings. Then, this "Reasonable conversation about Pauper" showed up in my feed and they brought the subject back on the table. The video is quite interesting (focused mostly on constructed Pauper though) so here's a link for those who'd want to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmHvTnG6VQ4
Anyways, here is the question: would yall be interested in trying together to put what this community's Pauper cube would be? And if so what are your inputs on how to do so?
I was aiming for the same thing, discussing altogether about the different choices. I was thinking having a voting system and each step, the community would vote for this or that and so on. Should I start a new thread or maybe someone with higher qualifications (I don't know anyhting about polls or something similar)?
The problem is, that there is a huge amount of interchangeable equally powerful cards that compete for specific spots. I don't think you can make a complete cube, but rather the core of a cube with cards that are present in most lists.
But as Runner said, a mission statement would be best to start with.
Is it something that tries to get people into pauper cubing? Cause that would be like an Iconic Pauper cube, going through multiple standards and picking commons that defined that standard. Although this might be hard and result in somewhat parasitic keywords like infect and affinity showing up a lot.
I strongly support a community Pauper cube, and I also strongly support a Wizards cube. I do think that there are a number of problems with it, which have been mentioned here a little bit, but I think that it would be very good for us to detach ourselves from our babies a little bit. A mission statement would be very important. Here are a few of the considerations/questions for me:
-Who is the audience/how often would they play? The MTGO Cubes tend to be larger than most Cubes because they will be played more often by a larger number of people than most Cubes. The increase in variety is an important and desirable goal. I think if we were gunning for an MTGO style cube, we would want at least 720 cards. This does effect other questions.
-How often would we update/play? I strongly support the idea of a "Core" Cube that updates with each expansion release to play with the themes of the new set. This will work for some sets better than others, but a huge part of the charm of lower powered Cubes for me is digging through time and seeing how new mechanics and themes interact with old ones. For instance, I would expect War of the Spark edition to support various forms of Counters from over the year to play with all of the Proliferate.
-What is the power level of the Cube? I would shoot deliberately low, and be much more willing to cut for high power level or disruptive play than I am in my own Cube so that the rotating themes have more chance to shine.
-What is the desired play experience? This is a little hard to define, but I imagine it being something like "Default Limited Plus." We're playing with Commons, so we're playing with the simplest possible version of all of our themes. However, I do think there is a little more room for variety in our themes than we typically want or desire. For instance, I've been pretty down on specific, narrowly defined archetypes in the past, because I think they're directly responsible for many of the weakest parts of Magic in the past few years (which probably reached its nadir in BFZ). But I think this more explicit support would be much more desirable for a widely played, regularly updated "Community Cube."
Just kind of spitballing, but I really like this idea.

Hey gang! So many new cards from Modern Horizons! With the amount of changelings and tribe-matters cards, does anyone think there is any viable tribe support for cube?
Hey gang! So many new cards from Modern Horizons! With the amount of changelings and tribe-matters cards, does anyone think there is any viable tribe support for cube?
You can make it more viable than it initial was. I had a skeleton a long time ago. http://www.cubetutor.com/visualspoiler/3022
The issues back then weren't the number of Changelings (but this increase helps) but more the Lorwyn paradox: How many Tribes can successfully be supported per color? Also, do your non-Tribal related filler overtake the point of tribal?
Here was my layout:
5C Slivers
5C Spirits (??)
5C Humans
R/b Goblins
B/u(w) Zombies
W/G Kithkin (Depends on Humans ot not)
W/x Soldiers/Humans (it changes)
G/x Treefolk (this seemed cut-able)
U/w/b Merfolk
R/X Elemetals (5C ??)
U/B Faerie/Rogue
G/w/b Elves
U/R/b Wizards
B/W/r Vampires
R/G/b/w Warriors
Pirates seemed too uninspiring. Rebels is only OK at Common
Your main source of incentives was Lorwyn, Onslaught, Innistrad and Khans blocks
The other issues I saw were:
Removal has to be Tribe-related, big push for Legion's Creatures-as-spells over non-creature spells, artifacts are gonna be fixing or OP; Stalagtite in Lorwyn was HUGE in limited.
ive to go back to my tier3, it got tons of cards with ravnica and mh. All the +1+1 stuff and tribals will make it an excellent cube. http://www.cubetutor.com/visualspoiler/4709
Did anyone test Blade Juggler? I'm interested, if this card performs in Pauper Cube.
It's fringe constructed Pauper playable. It's essentially a better version of Phyrexian Rager.
It should be very cube-able, as are other versions of the same card like Dusk Legion Zealot, Phyrexian Rager, Coiling Oracle, Elvish Visionary, Thraben Inspector, etc. (any others that I'm missing?)
Getting more than a single card's worth of value out of a card in limited seems to be the name of the game. In limited these cards are more playable than they are in constructed, the free body you get out of them is actually relevant and you can afford to durdle for a turn and play one of these.
The additional requirements to make it 2B, make it an Aggro, Tempo, or Midrange card. The others mentioned can often fit in Control, Blade Juggler is real mediocre in true control.
So long as your Cube keeps true control at 25% or less in design, Blade Juggler will encourage aggressive design; imo, that is good
I know I run a UW Artifact aggro deck is MTGO Pauper and yea I love ethersworn sheildmage but i could see him as a cool option in a pauper cube as a fog/removal spell.

Ulvenwald Captive, Walker of the Grove, Sauroform Hybrid, the cycling fatties and to a lesser extent Ravenous Leucrocota which is kinda bad are all ramp payoffs in green that are still live in the early stages of the game. In Red you have Vildin-Pack Outcast which is imo THE best Red 5 drop and probably the best top end for Red midrange/control decks, and Ill-Tempered Cyclops and Gluttonous Cyclops as ramp payoffs, on top of the X burn spells and Bestow dudes which you already run.
Also you're missing Cultivate and the 1 CMC elves and Land Auras, although I suppose that's a conscious decision.

You can make it more viable than it initial was. I had a skeleton a long time ago. http://www.cubetutor.com/visualspoiler/3022
The issues back then weren't the number of Changelings (but this increase helps) but more the Lorwyn paradox: How many Tribes can successfully be supported per color? Also, do your non-Tribal related filler overtake the point of tribal?
Here was my layout:
5C Slivers
5C Spirits (??)
5C Humans
R/b Goblins
B/u(w) Zombies
W/G Kithkin (Depends on Humans ot not)
W/x Soldiers/Humans (it changes)
G/x Treefolk (this seemed cut-able)
U/w/b Merfolk
R/X Elemetals (5C ??)
U/B Faerie/Rogue
G/w/b Elves
U/R/b Wizards
B/W/r Vampires
R/G/b/w Warriors
Pirates seemed too uninspiring. Rebels is only OK at Common
Your main source of incentives was Lorwyn, Onslaught, Innistrad and Khans blocks
The other issues I saw were:
Removal has to be Tribe-related, big push for Legion's Creatures-as-spells over non-creature spells, artifacts are gonna be fixing or OP; Stalagtite in Lorwyn was HUGE in limited.

Ignoring what Magic players say isn't the answer, it's listening to what they have to say and doing the exact opposite that's correct.
So long as your Cube keeps true control at 25% or less in design, Blade Juggler will encourage aggressive design; imo, that is good
