Found these cards in a Gathering search. Alms provides a repeatable prevention effect similar to Troubled Healer. Is it reliable enough? Is 1 mana to stop 1 point of damage worth it? Barrow Ghoul No jokes here, this guy is massive for 2 mana, although I feel his drawback is too great to be worth it. Choking Sands A black Molten Rain! It does have the anti-swamp cause, but if you want more land destruction in black, this is the way to go. Anoint Is another repeatible damage prevention spell which would be very annoying to deal with. Dauthi Jackal Have people actually tested out this dude. He actually is pretty insane!
barrow Ghoul can't come down until the lategame. I don't see it.
I've never been a fan of LD. Doesn't do as much as I like & is almost always cut from the MD.
Having to keep up that much mana for Anoint seems a bit much.
The Jackal also seems testable!
Update On Pauper Cube Projects
I will be opening the 2012 Pauper Power Rankings at the beginning of the next week, after the RTR prerelease. At this point we'll have some experience with RTR, although I don't foresee any RTR cards making it into Top 20s.
I'm also thinking of starting a new project, where every week or so, we feature a Pauper cube and get people to submit card suggestions and things for it. It'll give some of the newer Pauper cubes some much deserved spotlight. What do you guys think?
Now that I'm in the midsts of my school holidays, I'll also be able to set up some Crack-A-Packs for you guys. =D
Of course. Usually it would just be in their cube thread, with the announcement for it here.
Make The Picks! #2
I've simulated the first five boosters of a regular 8-man booster draft, using my Pauper cube. Make your picks! Make sure not to peek at later packs before making your picks. =D
Now, I'm not quite sure what's what with this yet, my cube has sadly not been able to come together yet, but I'd probably do it like this:
Crippling Fatigue is the only black card in the pack, besides Dross Golem which I predict will wheel, and sends a pretty clear signal while also being a removal spell I get to use TWICE. Feeling confident.
I just passed some nice white and red, so I'll probably pass on Lancer and Seraph, but the green I passed wasn't anything to write home about, so I feel good picking up a Civic Wayfinder to keep my options open. Though I thought about the Web, I like the fixing a bit more.
Now we have some goodies. Nothing spectacular, but a number of role players. The Elf, Tusker, Signet, and Rager all seem lovely for this midrange Rock type deck that's coming together. I'll wheel the Rager I bet because black has been sparse and I'll probably get at least one of the green ramp elements, since there's so many, so I'm looking at the Arbor Elf because I'm of the opinion that it's the best option and helps me hit the three drop slot that is oh so important in this deck type.
Now is when I begin to wonder if black is open or not. Nobody seems to be taking red, but I've passed some red that makes me wonder if moving in now would be the best idea. The burn looks tempting, maybe play the Branching off a splash. Wurm seems easy to replace so I'm not looking to pick that up quite yet and Umbra is not quite what I'm wanting. In the interest of trying things out I'll take the Viridian Longbow as a bit of utility maybe. Seems like it might work out.
So I'm confident that green is open enough that I can pick up the Wolf now. I may be overvaluing it, but I'm of the opinion that it's very good. UR seems like I could've done better there, but I'll stick to my guns. I'll snag up the Darkthicket Wolf because it's a bit more resilient than the Marauder.
So it's a midrange Gb thing going on, I'm digging it.
Of course. Usually it would just be in their cube thread, with the announcement for it here.
Make The Picks! #2
I've simulated the first five boosters of a regular 8-man booster draft, using my Pauper cube. Make your picks! Make sure not to peek at later packs before making your picks. =D
So I'm really happy with the picks, but I know I've passed Ramp dudes in Avacyn's PilgrimKrosan Tusker and Arbor Elf. Hopefully one would get back to me, but otherwise I'm very happy with the picks I've been able to pick up, and am confident in my removal thus far, and the fatties that I can lay down.
P1: Mana Leak, not really close for me. I'm not as much of a fan of Pyrotechnics as some others.
P2: Errant Ephemeron definitely. Probably the best card in the pack (definitely better than the spider...), and it keeps us blue.
P3: Stay blue with Calcite Snapper or go green. I'd actually take Arbor Elf if I was going green, but I don't think it's quite worth it here and I'd just pick up the snapper.
P4: LAVA DART! No, I think this is between Flood and Sparksmith. We're mono blue so far (though we could change) and flood looks amazing in our deck. Flood for me.
P5: Miscalculation, not really close IMO.
P1: Pyrotechnics - This isn't really close for me. Crippling Fatigue is good, but I feel Pyrotechnics is more powerful and it's far more splashable. Over all, I feel it's the most powerful card in the pack.
P2: Errant Ephemeron - I don't consider Pyrotechnics marrying me to red, so I still feel pretty open. The three best cards in this pack are Errant Ephemeron, Seraph of Dawn, and Sentinel Spider. For me, this pick comes down to personal preference and the fact that I didn't really pass any good blue from pack 1.
P3: Izzet Boilerworks - Calcite Snapper is appealing, but by no means necessary, and mana fixing lands are quite rare in common cube drafts, so I'm happy to pick the one that's in my apparent colors.
P4: Flood - Fire Ambush and Rift Bolt both got my attention, but then I saw Flood and it's just not close. I'm concerned that blue may be getting cut, but if it is, why on earth did someone pass Flood in the first place?
P5: Magma Burst - I really want Shoreline Ranger, but I feel I can probably table that, and Magma Burst is solid removal.
So yeah, UR control it looks like for me. Cards I'm looking to table:
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
While you can always hope, in my cube the chance of wheeling these is pretty close to zero - not quite zero, but I'm pretty sure it's never happened yet.
For me it went:
Pyrotechnics by a wide margin
Ephemeron also fairly easily
Death spark (slightly over snapper, sad to passthe green stuff but didn't want to move in)
Sparksmith
Miscalculation slightly over red removal
Quite satisfied, mainly due to power level of first two picks
Pack 1: Pyrotechnics
Pack 2: Civic Wayfinder
Pack 3: Krosan Tusker
Pack 4: Fire Ambush (Is this better than Rift Bolt?)
Pack 5: Magma Burst
Looks like I have the start of some sort of R/G Ramp Burnd deck.
I finally finished my cube list. 405 cards, based off of Usman's and Lanxal's list. Let me know what you think. I probably missed some obvious stuff. After I order my missing cards I'll make a thread.
Pyrotechnics - That card is such a bomb! It's like a mini undercosted Rolling Thunder. Civic Wayfinder - I'm looking for a big G/R/x deck. They are one of my favourites to build. Yavimaya Elder - Continuing with the previous pick flavour. Spark Smith - After looking at this pack I'm going to try and wheel the Branching Bolt, which I really want for my deck. Darkthicket Wolf - In my opinion is green's second best 2 drop after Wild Mongrel. It also opens up the way for a more aggressive G/R deck.
1.Pyrotechnics, and it's not even slightly close. Pyrotechnics is this format's one-sided wrath. Splashable, too, which means I'm not committed to red. 2.Errant Ephemeron. Like I said earlier, we're not committed to red. I like UR decks and it really wants solid creatures, although we're not necessarily in that deck type either. 3.Calcite Snapper. There are a lot of powerful green cards, but I'd rather stick with blue. Snapper is very strong. 4.Flood, windmill slam. That card can just be silly. 5.Magma Burst, I'd say. High impact card.
Behind the Scenes: Unfortunately for the red drafters, it's unlikely you'll be getting any more red if this draft actually happened in real time. Drafters feeding to you actually took Staggershock, Arc Lightning and Brimstone Volley from those packs.
By the way, anyone else who wants to do one of these, go for it! =D

Is Arena valid in this format? It was only ever released as a book promo or a Time Spiral reprint.
Also, I love how this format is so easy to pimp out. Everything, even promos are all dirt cheap and people will fall over each other to trade away this stuff.
Also, I love how this format is so easy to pimp out. Everything, even promos are all dirt cheap and people will fall over each other to trade away this stuff.
Haha yeah. It's awesome fun looking for foils in my LGS's binders whenever I go for a prerelease.
I feel this is the beginning to a really sick control deck. I think other people drafting red is fine, as I'd only be grabbing easy to splash, high-impact red spells for this type of deck. Calcite Snapper and Flood will do a lot to stall the board so just a splash of red removal should be fine and it's fairly likely we could wheel the UR bounceland.
Edit: Apparently I missed Errant in P2. That's probably the pick, but Brainstorm would be solid as well.
O_o that's a lot of red in the packs. How do you make yours?
I do, 2 of each color, 1 land, then shuffle everything left together and do 4 randoms. I always thought my way made a lot of variance but consistently 3-4 red cards in each pack seems really strange.
Got a bit bored tonnight. Bought almost all of the red and green cards I need for foiling out my cube. Just skipped a few.
Missing
Faithless Looting: Seems like this could be a FNM promo. Want to give them the chance to do that before buying a foil one.
Splatter Thug/Gore-House Chainwalker: They sort of need to be on sale before I can buy them.
Mogg War Marshal: Since when was this a $10-12 card?
Avacyn Pilgrim: Friend says he has a FNM one for me.
Yavimaya Elder/Kodama's Reach: Trying to ebay one.
Penumbra Spider: Both SCG and Troll and Toad didn't have one for sale.
Still have to figure out what to do with the 15-20 cards that can't be foiled.

Why should Blinding Beam be so much better than Frost Breath? Really much people play the beam, but none plays the breath. Is the fact, that the beam prevents all creatures from being untapped really sooo much better, that there even would be paid an additional mana?
The thing is, these kind of effects are more geared towards the lategame, so at that point the mana difference is nearly negligible. Preventing all creatures from untapping has actually proven to be very important in games. It makes Blinding Beam much more relevant in the lategame.
Frost Breath isn't bad, though. It's just that blue has Undo and things, which do the same thing but are much better.
