the best use of stitched drake is in decks that can sac or mill themselves. toughest situation so far was t2 Augur of Skulls into t3 drake. the deck can go aggro route as well as control route then. but it needs a buildaround cube/deck, so i dont think its staple.
i dont know about the average cube, but mine (T1) runs:
Id consider those cards more or less staple in powered cubes and i think thats a more or less fair amount of ping effects, but i did cut a lot of toughness 1 stuff at the same time.
but i dont think the problem is the amount, but the efficiency of ping effects. a single desert or other repeatable ping can ruin your whole aggro play when you are dependant on those 2/1s. Its also not only about ping effects, but dieing into everything, like tokens or 1/x
My list are no arguments, but just the effects that efficently kill x/1, so Pestilence and Crypt Rats are on this list as well. How many effects, do your cube run? Maybe you want to contribute to the topic.
We talked about that "loop" very often now and you are right about the balance. Except Javelineers, Gut Shot, Witches and maybe Lava Dart those cards are core of each cube and its far from overloaded. Heck, Desert and Arrows alone are probably enough reason not to include too many x/1s. Btw, Shot is absolutely needed to give non-br decks an out to certain x/1 that still exist. I even run Mana Elves again, but still not sold, honestly. Funnily enough, T1 runs even more x/1 than T2 (albeit almost the same)
Besides, being able to ping or burn face will always be better "in a vaccum" than just another vanilla 3/1.
Or dou you want to tell me, that the flexibilty Shadow Guildmage offers, is worse than Vampire Interloper, because than we can just stop talking here.
Cube meta tends to either kil quick or become a ressource grind, so you dont want weak creatures early to have defense and later you open yourself up to 1-3 or worse trades, which just lose you the game.
I consider my cube very balanced when it comes to x/1s and I dont see any reason to include all those fragile stuff. My main argument against Looter and Undertaker btw is their non existent bodys in combat and the tempoloss they generate. There is definitely no time for such things. Even the T2 can beat you incredible fast (partly because of those 2/1 unblockables lol)
You guys also seem to have too much focus on the "ping" argument, because thats usually just the nail in the coffin on top of other reasons.
Even the T2 can beat you incredible fast (partly because of those 2/1 unblockables lol)
So question for you then, because i believe you've mentioned numerous times about fast your cube decks seem to be, and how slow the looters are. Perhaps then are you supporting aggro too much and midrange/control not enough? Maybe cut those unblockables?
Even the T2 can beat you incredible fast (partly because of those 2/1 unblockables lol)
So question for you then, because i believe you've mentioned numerous times about fast your cube decks seem to be, and how slow the looters are. Perhaps then are you supporting aggro too much and midrange/control not enough? Maybe cut those unblockables?
This thread is about evaluating cards based on powerlevel. So why should i decrease powerlevel on aggrocards to help mediocre midrange cards to be played? Makes zero sense to me.
If you are aware, I run 2 different cubes right? My T1 is a "powered" cube, that means I definitely dont cut on strong cards to balance stuff, instead I add cards that can compete with them. And Looter are definitely out of question there. I mean, we are talking about T3 Blastoderm here...
I run the spell based library manipulation and a quite high amount of removal. So midrange and control are possible. Besides, my definition of powerlevel is strong tempoplay, so a fast meta is logical.
The T2 focus mainly on synergies between cards and is an archetype based cube. Every card from the T1 is banned here, so the powerlevel is already much lower. Midrange and control are possible as well, but they need different tools than looter here as well. You need early defense with high toughness creatures and some kind of mass removal against tokens and unblockables. But if you would cut down aggro there, combodecks would probably become unbeatable and the cards should be Tier2 anyway, right?
So maybe on Tier3 level, where all the good aggrocards are gone... (you would have welkin terns there)
So on Tier4 level where all aggrocards are gone the meta might become slow enough for looter.
And Salmo, I would appreciate if you play my cube first (since we have the option now), before you further contribute to unfounded assumptions

huh? in no way this was meant as an offense. I just noticed your upvote and since mrengineer is just speculating my midrange is not supported, i would have liked that you join a draft. Unfounded assumptions? Honestly dude, stop insulting mine and others' intelligence here. You're a real piece of *****.
it was a statement into the blue, more or less ignoring our balance discussion of the last 4 years. i even added more midrange support with more ping effects, that was pointed out literally in the same post. actually i feel insulted by those random comments, because why do i contribute here for years and discuss the aggro/midrange/control balance regularely, when someone seems too lazy to follow our discussions on the topic.
sure, he is new and i should be a more patient person than i am, but at the same time you are getting personal now. it was meant to mock you a bit, not trigger you beyond everything.
but yeah, it definitely seems were at the point to stop theorizing cubebuilding here and actually experience each other approaches, because it has become a really low barrier with xmage. otherwise it will continue to be the endless loop, whether to run the 2/1 unblockables or the looter, or both or none, where everybody is annoyed because they just repeat and read the same arguments for years.
Hmmmm I wonder why it got personal...can't be the fact that you intentionally mocked me because I liked a comment, right? It's almost like serious ********s intentionally mock people, and you do that all the time! A real piece of ***** you are, that's for sure. Calling someone out because they aren't taking into account 4 years of discussion, do you have any idea how insane that sounds? It makes you come across as a real unreasonable ********. The mental gymnastics being done here to avoid accepting responsibility for being a piece of ***** is truly amazing on a scary level. Honestly, why do you contribute here? So you can ignore everyone else and put them down for not following the Humphreys way? I'm just kidding, I'm not honestly asking because I know any answer you give will be more bull***** mental gymnastics.
I dont think cube designer should copy paste each other, but for a while its entertaining to promote your own approach when it comes to "the most incredible, broken, powerful" cube the world has seen. But its kinda a dead end, because the powerlevel shifts within the in-cube meta and unless we smash decks made of our cubes into each other, we will never find out whats "best".
besides, many of us have already started to shift away from "powerlevel matters" to "gameplay matters" and its also kinda unrealistic to expect bombs like blastodern or crypt rats as commons anytime soon again.
so even when i dont agree with different opinions, i dont take it personal. And when Al get a bit spikey towards me, i dont get too upset either, because more of us have some attitude sometimes and its that back and forth for years.
night hyrda literally started it with poking the bear, so we all knew whats gonna happen here
written text is always open to interpretation. because the same sentence can mean: "shut up you idiot" or "i like you, come play with me" and i understand its even more hard to follow me on that because i tend to cross the line and i still appreciate when someone calls me out on it, because it just helps me to improve my acceptance over time.
Here's something to accept: when you intentionally mock someone for liking someone's opinion that goes against yours and that's why you're calling them out, you're an ********. Not sure if you know what the definition of 'mocking' is, but its not exactly warm and friendly and inviting.
You act like Night intentionally provoked you--provoking the bear? Are you serious? He just made a point because he's curious, and then you take it as an attack because of the euphemism he uses! It's insane you can justify it like that.
i dont feel attacked, but yes i felt invited to rejoin that topic for another round
its also not a opinion i disagree with engineer, since he asked a question. actually no, he didnt ask, but made the assumption my cube has only aggro, and thats wrong based on gamplay experience and design, although aggro is pretty dominant for sure. the mock that followed also wasnt supposed to be targeted towards you, but towards him, since it was his post. The first half of that sentence was towards you. Play with my cube to get a impression. I think part of the reason you are that upset is, because you feel kinda caught, because you didnt want to get involved too much into the discussion, but stay in the back and just like this and that. but maybe thats only a mental gymnastic
Are you serious? I literally told you why I'm upset: you mocked me based on a like on a comment, and then act all confused and use the language barrier as a defense when clearly you have the capacity to understand the language enough to know how to mock people.
It's not caught off guard or embarrassment or whatever bull ***** you're implying. Like I've watched you and others play the games from your cube, I know how the cube plays out to whatever degree that is based on watching the games. It's your involving me in a way that insults me and tries to embarrass me, and I'm not going to sit down and take that because ******* ******** bully like yourself shouldn't get to mock who they want and then play their own 'victim card'.
But keep digging that hole where you continue to insult me and infer I'm passively involved and 'ya got me' or some *****. (Even though I've been calling you out here in this thread for your BS the entire time so clearly have no problem 'sitting in the front' and not in the back, as if that would be bad or embarrassing anyways.)
Like, I defended you when someone else insanely made an account to mock you, and after I was caught off guard there I thought maybe I had you wrong. But nope, you're an ******** and continuing to insult me and make inferences on my character because I liked a couple posts and then called you out on it later.
dude, i have no idea, why you are so triggered now and actually i dont care anymore. you seemed nice and symphathetic when you asked me to join private chat, but now like one unfortunate post later you turn 180° and go full enrage mode. thats not reasonable at all. ive never thrown any words at you, like you do all the time now and youre passing the line here and i wonder why you dont get moderated.
i remember having you on my ignore list for quite some time, because actually its not the first time you act completely irrational. so, yeah my comments might sound unfair sometimes, but how about you watch for yourself right now, because somehow i wonder myself what you are doing in the pauper discussion anyway. Like I couldnt even figure out what your forum account is based on your discord apperearence, because you only play unpowered, not even peasant. If I had known who you are, id probably just asked you in chat about a game, but at the same time, I wouldnt have taken you so serious in the first place..
but i need to apologize by mrengineer, because he didnt meant his question in a bad way for sure and it was not as unfounded, because he were reffering to my quick meta comments.
Okay everyone needs to take a break for a moment. Flaming and trolling will not be tolerated. If you guys can not keep it on the cards but rather keep going after each other, I will infract. Any personal attacks or comments that come off as intending to get other users flame will not be tolerated as these are flaming and trolling respectively. As this is not the first time this has happened I'm going to remind everyone to review the forum and subfourm rules on what is permitted and what is not.
Wow, didnt mean to start all this. I was actually just curious on Humphrey's take with his cube. I think it was a little condescending of an answer, but i appriciate the apology at the end.
So has there been much Core 19 talk yet? I haven't seen much (and apologize if im missing it). Do you guys like anything from it?
Humphreys is a giant ********, this is par the course, shake the tree then act aghast when the nuts find the hollows. I might get suspended for this but I really don't give a ***** anymore, he's been such an ******** for so long that I'm just sick of it.
You're better off on Reddit or some other forum, instead of dealing with Humphreys who makes insane inferences from out of his ass and then goes 'idk why you're so mad' and the mods just buy it.
It was bull***** when someone made up an account to mock him. But *******-a, he can do whatever he wants and mock anyone and it's alright. **** that.
Don't worry though, I'm in the process of deleting my account (you can't just delete it, otherwise I'd be way gone) because id rather spend zero time here than for a second share space with humphreys and the mods who enable his behavior vs actually dealing with it, have fun listening to his BS, like how he thinks because I haven't been cubing much in the last month that I haven't played pauper peasant and therefore don't get to participate. Like if that's the impetus to his insult you can get an idea for the type of ******* moron speaking out of his ass he is.
Humphreys doesn't respect your opinion if for a month you don't cube every time he does, don't forget that. Thats the type of ******** you're arguing with.
**Big Picture**
Humphrey is an aggressive, somewhat abrasive personality. His T1 cube is... Aggressive and somewhat abrasive. While I would love to sit down and play in an 8-man with him and his cube, that will never happen. But, I would like to point out the necessity of taking a design to both the extreme (Aggro efficiency) and maintaining it. It is actually a healthy extreme to see and judge against.
Styborski has this open input, ever changing, cult-of-the-new cube that is of use for promotion of the format, but also constantly playing more new cards then many of us think viable. He essentially has an ultra-hip liberal cube. Always saying "hi" to new cards and re-supporting the returning mechanics, and constantly making odd choices, but doing so to support the "budget" or n00b-friendly angle. It is another healthy extreme.
Our group is mostly a more narrow-minded conservation of the "better" cards because efficiency, and balance are very big to us as a whole here. It is needed disheartening that we mostly only get together to jab at the new sets. But finding "new" and experienced drafters in our very-narrow universe is hard. Especially with MtG somewhat moving away from what we held dear.
Im on xmage, feel free to contact me and we start a draft its not the paper experience ofc but the best we can get and it has probably even more upsides besides organizing a rl draft. like always updated with all cards, no need to shuffle etc.
Luminous Bonds (Borderline):
Put with the group of similar enchantments that have no significant upside in the average cube that starts with Bound in Silence)
Martyr of Dusk (Bad):
The initial body is bad and the 1/1 with lifelink you get when it dies doesn't make it interesting.
Moment of Triumph (Borderline):
The pump isn't best, but with the extra life attached it can be nice.
Crashing Tide (Borderline):
Will mostly be a Drag Under in the average cube so group this with that
Deadeye Rig-Hauler (Bad)
The timing restriction for the bounce takes a lot of the oomph out of Man-o'-War-style cards since you can't bounce anything pre-combat and you may not even be able to make a profitable attack, in a scenario you might have been able to if you could bounce before combat.
Kitesail Corsair (Cubeable):
Could just group with the similar Welkin Tern and similar. It's slightly different of course, but I don't think it's different enough that it needs its own entry. Mostly a side-grade.
Secrets of the Golden City (Borderline):
An upgraded version of divination for the cost of an extra U in the cost. Still not very exciting though.
Soul of the Rapids (Borderline):
The body is small to begin with, but it's a good carrier of equipment and aura. It can be nice if you support the hexproof archetype.
Spire Winder (Bad):
The initial body isn't exciting and it can take a while to turn on Ascend.
Sworn Guardian (Bad):
group with the similar vanilla 1/3s
Dark Inquiry (Bad):
Group with similar bad 3 cmc discard spells (starts with Coercion)
Dinosaur Hunter (Bad)
Groupe with the other bears with fringe upsides
Dusk Charger (Borderline)
Getting bigger in the late game is nice, but the initial body isn't very exciting and black doesn't go very wide or use permanent based removal very often to help with Ascending.
Impale (Bad)
Group with other 4 cmc sorcery speed unconditionals
Moment of Craving (Cubeable)
A solid removal spell that's best against aggro but otherwise still fine and flexible. Mostly the strictly better Sorin's Thirst
Vampire Champion (Borderline)
A decent sized body that can trade with anything.
Overgrown Armasaur (Borderline):
Requires some built around with other cards like pingers to worthwhile, but can potentially make a decent amount of saprolings.
Orazca Relic (Borderline):
A 3-mana rock that only produces colorless mana isn't exciting but being able to turn it into a card and 3 life once it's no longer needed is pretty nice.
I think that is a fine start since you have been fairly conservative in handing out "cubeable" ratings. From there everyone can quibble over specific cards. The only one that popped out to me is Jungleborn Pioneer which gives you (basically) a Gladecover Scout when it enters which matters for cubes with an hexproof+aura theme (which is a sizeable chunk of them since it tends to be quite powerful at the pauper level).
Martyr of Dusk - borderline. Getting a replacement token is okay in grindy games. I considered it a few times.
Kitesail Corsair - still no friend of those 2/1s but I agree its on par with Terns
Mist-Cloaked Herald - id put both on bad
Soul of the Rapids - its kinda borderline, but at the same time better than other borderline stuff :/
Fathom Fleet Boarder - still bad. 3/3 for 3 must be noticable better than cathodion
Grasping Scoundrel - i tend towards borderline. its not a real 2/1
Vampire Champion - bad. 3/3 is big enough on its own to kill stuff, but 3 power for 4 is not aggressive enough these days.
Bombard - meh. bad. pay 1 more and target to the dome as well.
Swaggering Corsair - boderline. see above
Jadecraft Artisan - bad. as said. 3/3 for 4 must have a huge upside to become interesting
Jungleborn Pioneer - uhm. very much playable (read borderline) Summoner as well.
Orazca Frillback - borderline. 4/2 is a really bad statline
i dont know about the average cube, but mine (T1) runs:
Icatian Javelineers
Cuombajj Witches
Crypt Rats
Pestilence
Cartouche of Ambition
Tragic Slip
Fireslinger
Forked Bolt
Lava Dart
Arc Lightning
Pyrotechnics
Rolling Thunder
Fireball
Shadow Guildmage
Granger Guildmage
Viridian Longbow
Serrated Arrows
Pith Driller
Desert
Gut Shot
Id consider those cards more or less staple in powered cubes and i think thats a more or less fair amount of ping effects, but i did cut a lot of toughness 1 stuff at the same time.

So has there been much Core 19 talk yet? I haven't seen much (and apologize if im missing it). Do you guys like anything from it?
Thats the type of ******** you're arguing with.

for m19 and any new set we have the spoiler thread

needs some playstesting and time investment to get the full evaluation done here.

Personal Enjoyment Cube
T2 powpercube Value https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/37t
Put with group of bad modal cards that starts with Alabaster Potion
Exultant Skymarcher (Cubeable):
Functional reprint of Chapel Geist
Luminous Bonds (Borderline):
Put with the group of similar enchantments that have no significant upside in the average cube that starts with Bound in Silence)
Martyr of Dusk (Bad):
The initial body is bad and the 1/1 with lifelink you get when it dies doesn't make it interesting.
Moment of Triumph (Borderline):
The pump isn't best, but with the extra life attached it can be nice.
Sanguine Glorifier (Bad):
Tribal card
Snubhorn Sentry (Bad):
The body takes way too long to be relevant.
Squire's Devotion (Borderline):
A fine aura, but it's usually still not worth the risk of card disadvantage on non-hexproof creatures.
Sun-Crested Pterodon (Bad):
Tribal Card
Sun Sentinel (Bad):
Functional reprint of Huatli's Snubhorn
Mist-Cloaked Herald (Borderline):
Functional reprint of Triton Shorestalker
River Darter (Bad):
Put in the group of creatures with way-too situational abilities.
Sea Legs (Bad):
Tribal Card
Secrets of the Golden City (Borderline):
An upgraded version of divination for the cost of an extra U in the cost. Still not very exciting though.
Soul of the Rapids (Borderline):
The body is small to begin with, but it's a good carrier of equipment and aura. It can be nice if you support the hexproof archetype.
Spire Winder (Bad):
The initial body isn't exciting and it can take a while to turn on Ascend.
Sworn Guardian (Bad):
group with the similar vanilla 1/3s
Waterknot (Cubeable):
Functional Reprint of Claustrophobia
Functional reprint of Mass of Ghouls
Dark Inquiry (Bad):
Group with similar bad 3 cmc discard spells (starts with Coercion)
Dinosaur Hunter (Bad)
Groupe with the other bears with fringe upsides
Dusk Charger (Borderline)
Getting bigger in the late game is nice, but the initial body isn't very exciting and black doesn't go very wide or use permanent based removal very often to help with Ascending.
Dusk Legion Zealot (Borderline):
The black Elvish Visionary. They body isn't great, but it replaces itself at least.
Fathom Fleet Boarder (Borderline?)
Do you folks think the 1 less life loss makes this good enough to be a ranking above Serpent Warrior?
Grasping Scoundrel (Cubeable)
A fine 2 power aggressive 1-drop
Gruesome Fate (Bad)
Group with Alms of the Vein to create a group of bad life-loss cards
Impale (Bad)
Group with other 4 cmc sorcery speed unconditionals
Moment of Craving (Cubeable)
A solid removal spell that's best against aggro but otherwise still fine and flexible. Mostly the strictly better Sorin's Thirst
Vampire Champion (Borderline)
A decent sized body that can trade with anything.
Voracious Vampire (Bad)
Tribal Card
Flame Slash at instant speed can be nice but 3 mana is bit much
Brazen Freebooter (Bad)
The treasure can sometimes be nice to help double spell or fix mana but otherwise, it's just a Hill Giant
Buccaneer's Bravado (Bad)
Tribal Card
Fanatical Firebrand (Borderline)
Group with Mogg Fanatic
Frilled Deathspitter (Borderline)
A decent body with damage tacked on is nice.
Goblien Trailblazer (Cubeable)
A solid 2-power creature with evasion
Mutiny (Bad)
A neat design, but red has better options for removal.
Orazca Raptor (Bad)
Functional Reprint of Hyena Pack
Stampeding Horncrest (Bad)
Tribal Card
Sun-Collared Raptor (Bad)
It's bad in the early game and requires a decent amount of mana each turn to be relevant.
Swab Goblin (Bad)
Put with other vanilla bears
Swaggering Corsair (Cubeable)
A 3/3 for 3 mana is good and Raid isn't usually too hard to enable in red decks.
A fine pseudo-evasive two drop. Could just group with Deeproot Warrior
Giltgrove Stalker (Borderline or Cubeable?)
Another fine evasive two-drop. May just group it with Hardy Veteran
Jade Bearer (Bad):
Tribal Card
Jadecraft Artisan (Borderline)
A Hill Giant with a decent upside. Not great, but not terrible either.
Jungleborn Pioneer (Bad):
Group with Scion Summoner
Knight of the Stampede (Bad):
Tribal Card
Orazca Frillback (Cubeable):
Functional reprint of Alpine Grizzly
Overgrown Armasaur (Borderline):
Requires some built around with other cards like pingers to worthwhile, but can potentially make a decent amount of saprolings.
Group with other similar bad walls
Orazca Relic (Borderline):
A 3-mana rock that only produces colorless mana isn't exciting but being able to turn it into a card and 3 life once it's no longer needed is pretty nice.
It's a work in progress
4/2 is a really bad statline
otherwise good ratings. very conservative.
