Edit: I forgot to say that I am rather intrigued by the presence of Adaptive Automaton in your cube. I suppose it is for aggressive decks and that human is the creature type that gets named the most? Is it still worth running in a deck that hasn't drafted as many humans as humanly possible?
It has been decent since it was included. Humans get named often, but black has a lot of zombies, red a lot of goblins and then you have token producers in all colours. It is not a card your cube will need, but it has its place in a lot of aggro decks and in token based midrange. Just boosting two creatures when it hits is a serious advantage for aggro decks that need to get damage through.
Thanks for your concern, but your fears are ungrounded We only recently added them back in as an experiment and aggro is very strong even without them. The experiment was the addition of the Mirage fetches, but it turns out aggro decks are the least likely of wanting these ETBT fetches, so the impact on landfall creatures is small.
While Daretti, Scrap Savant and Goblin Welder turned out decent in my artifact/reanimator hybrid yesterday, I wonder if Trash for Treasure is good enough to run. It costs 1 less than Zombify (which I run), but the latter can reanimate any creature and doesn't have an additional cost. I don't want to discourage you from testing it (as you said, testing borderline cards for a new archetype is helpful), but I suspect that this will be the first card that you will cut from your recent inclusions.
You could very well be right. We added it as some redundancy over Scrap Mastery (because of its cost), which is really important when trying to make a new archetype work. If it doesn't work or is just too weak, it'll get cut, but first we have to test.
You reminded me of the existence of Burning-Tree Emissary. Since Tattermunge Maniac is always the first 1-drop to be cut, I wonder if I should just go with the "free" 2-drop instead. It attacks one turn later, but it has no drawback and +1 toughness and being "free" instead of costing one mana matters when there is another 1-drop to curve out with.
I'd say, throw it in there and find out!
I've seen Inkwell Leviathan hard-cast in both control and ramp decks. It's more often tinkered or reanimated into play though. You are running a few strong accelerators, so I wouldn't consider it uncastable.
Well, it's *much* hard to cast than Sphinx of Jwar Isle.
Edit: I forgot to say that I am rather intrigued by the presence of Adaptive Automaton in your cube. I suppose it is for aggressive decks and that human is the creature type that gets named the most? Is it still worth running in a deck that hasn't drafted as many humans as humanly possible?
Quite a good guess It also sees a lot of play in token decks because they tend to have the same type: goblins, spirits, humans, soldiers... And sometimes, boosting only a single creature can make the difference. I remember this game where both me and my opponent had a Sphinx of the Steel Wind (I had a copy), and casting Adaptive Automaton naming 'Sphinx' actually won me the game. That was memorable
Ok this swap is not really related to any of the mentioned archetypes, we just wanted to give Vapors another shot and noticed that 'Render didn't see an awful lot of play.
Architect is obviously for artifact.dec but could hopefully also see play in the blue devotion midrange decks we see from time to time. Show and Tell is an extra cheat spell (see colorless changes for context), Meloku will probably fit better in this iteration of our cube than ever before and Triskelion didn't hack it as 'big scary artifact' so Inkwell steps in for that role. A word about the tempo counters, we both love these cards so they weren't cut lightly but they just see too little play to justify cutting something else before them.
Man the green cuts were tough. We didn't really want to cut any of these, but something had to go and as always, no cut needs to be permanent so any of these could be back later. All adds are for the 'lands matter' archetype, although Fastbond and the Baloths could see play in other decks as well.
Yup, the cube has been steadily growing lately. Probably we will start to trim it back down soon, but we wanted to test a bunch of those new guild hybrids. OP is up to date.
Hicham is the only one who will really gladly play it. Our third player and myself will only play it in an aggressive build, and then only if there's room after adding the best creatures, equipment, removal/disruption and powerful spells. In most cases, this means it sits in the sideboard - rochester sideboards are crazy powerful.
So in short, it's not a bad card by any means, but it doesn't see a lot of play in our group because of player preference.
For some reason, Loam has always disappointed us. The effect is usually just not powerful enough to compete with whatever your opponent is doing. We are keeping Crucible in a little longer to see if that can do enough for us.
I am not sure that Ojutai Exepmlars are the real deal, I guess they could be decent in some variety of UW deck, but 2WW seems like a lot of mana for that.
Re- Savannah Lions: correct, we have enough 1-drops in white at this point; the Dragon Hunter wins because of its creature type. Champion of the Parish is probably the best purely aggressive 1-drop in our cube at this point.
Flametongue Kavu: a card that has been missing the cut in main decks for a long time now. It's been avoiding the cut because of nostalgia and 'remembered value', but the truth is that our decks always have something better to run instead. Maybe this is part group-think, but really it doesn't matter since it's our cube. The fact that red is one of the tightest colors in our cube doesn't help - every card matters at this point.
Ojutai Exemplars: an experiment indeed, I could see this be really good, or a dud, and I have no idea at this point which it's going to be. White is always the color with the greatest amount of borderline cards for us though, so it doesn't hurt one bit to give the Exemplars some testing time.
I am more of a believer in Flametongue Kavu than Fredo is. The problem with it is not its power level. The problem is that it doesn't get main decked that much. I see two reasons for this.
One is the kind of red decks we see coming up in our drafts. In red based aggro it loses out to Hellrider, Hero and Koth. Then we have synergetic decks like Izzet Spells, Rakdos Pox, red based token decks. Here it gets pushed to the side board not because it doesn't have the power, but because the decks are too streamlined to include it over more synergetic cards.
The second reason is that in a typical draft we get too many decks against which Kavu is not optimal. Control with few creatures, planes walker control, Eureka, token decks, red burn and reanimator are but a few archetypes that get drafted regularly and against which the Kavu has to be sided out.
Maybe the fact that we Rochester execerbates the Kavu's weaknesses (see above). It shines in a more midrangy environment. Not that we don't get midrange here, we get a lot of those, but the way we draft (full table Rochester) lowers the natural midrangyness in all decks.
This update has us testing a lot of card that most likely will not be staing for years, but you can't know without testing.
We also lose some cards I personally liked, like Emrakul, Crucible, Show and Tell and Master of the Feast. But I am ok with high variance, while the others prefer consistency. Compromises is the fate of those of us who share a cube
Hicham, thank you for sharing your thoughts as well!
I think you make a good analysis of the reasons why FTK no longer makes the main deck on a regular basis. In a way FTK not making the cut can be seen as an indicator of how well archetype support works.
Hell yeah, my champion account got activated on CubeTutor: finally custom scans!
If you want to get a feel for what drafting my cube IRL would look like, feel free to take the cube for a spin on CubeTutor (link in sig)! With thanks to Ben for his awesome site, I look forward to CubeTutor going pro!
Glad to see that Thopter Spy Network gets a chance. I can see it being quite the powerhouse in Rochester. Would you consider it for regular drafts as well?
Is Abbot of Keral Keep in over Ash Zealot mainly for the easier mana cost, or do you think that it is generally the stronger card? I think I haven't played with Abbots ability and it is hard for me to evaluate.
I can see Battle Screech being very powerful in the right decks. I hope it performs well for you!
I assume that Elite Vanguard is a cut because in Rochester you don't need as much redundancy in the one drop slot in white.
You keep Trusty Machete over Silver-Inlaid Dagger. Is the toughness-boost that relevant, or is it just the consistency of the Machete vs. the Dagger?
Finally, how has Alesha, Who Smiles at Death played? The effect looks really strong on paper and competitively prized as well.
Thopter Spy Network: I'm a believer, at least in our format. I could see it working in a cube designed for booster draft as well, as long as it contains a sufficient amount of mana rocks, but I'm not sure. I'm excited about trying it out, in any case.
Here's the deck I drafted that main-decked the Spy Network:
Abbot of Keral Keep: I'm quite sure this card is weaker than Ash Zealot. We're just testing this card out in the slot of a card that's narrower than the other 2-drops. If the Abbot can convince us, he can stay in Zealot's slot. If not, Zealot comes back - she's pretty good for decks that can reliably cast her.
Battle Screech: still in the experimental phase, so far it's been ok but not wow. You really need to flash it back to get sufficient value, and if you can't do that the turn you cast it with some random soldier, it won't be easy to do it later on. Jury's still out on this one.
Concerning the Elite Vanguard cut: you guessed correctly, 7 aggressive 1-drops + Mother of Runes is enough to strongly support aggro. White weenie is quite strong in our cube.
Trusty Machete vs Silver-Inlaid Dagger: yes, I was surprised by how often the toughness boost was actually relevant. It turned out more of a bonus than another point of power for humans, and we found that 2 pieces of cheap equipment with equip cost 2 was one too many.
Alesha, Who Smiles at Death: I don't know, she had a hard time finding final 40s and the few times she did see play, the trigger was pretty hard to pay for. Also, Hicham never had any confidence in her, which of course doesn't help to extend a cube card's test run.
We missed Skinrender so it comes back in. Unearth is just not 'wanted' enough to merit a slot, as efficient as it is. When new Omnath was spoiled, it made me want to include Dragonlord Atarka, so we did It's quite some bang/buck, castable in ramp decks and a solid cheat target. BTE has been ok but has been underplayed lately so we thought we could go without it for now. Hordechief is fine but at an awkward cost, it often loses out to the competition so it's probably just not necessary. Hangarback has been played every time it was in the pool, always a good sign.
Looking forward to BFZ spoiler season to truly begin!
We've been brooding on a return of combo for a while now, and here it is. The bulk of this update is an overhaul of green, which will lose some aggressive elements and some creature-based ramp to make room for all the cards we wanted to add. The changes in the other colors (excepting the BFZ adds) were also made with the new combo emphasis in mind.
Daze was added as additional storm support but didn't turn out to be very wanted by storm. Inkwell is ok but very narrow, basically only Tinker support. Oath and Tamiyo go in as walker control support.
Oath of Druids was bad (again), so made room for another Oath. Advocate & Ooze fit the same slot and Advocate is more likely to see play (Ooze was often sideboard material for us because (while good) it's not essential for any deck. Oracle underperformed so we brought back the big bad wolf, which we ended up missing. Glad to have you back buddy.
Relic Seeker was perfectly fun, but is also perfectly cuttable, so there it goes. Another Oath and another walker - I think this Oath has actually the best shot at actually being a draw towards a walker centered deck.
Some OGW test cases + 2 extra answers against manlands. Having thought it over a bit more I don't see them being more than solid sideboard cards actually - input on this topic is welcome. This section grew 6 cards with this update, which makes me more than a little uncomfortable.
Testing the mage over the good, but redundant, sphere. I've no idea why we included Venser again, blink was never successful in our cube. My hopes aren't high.
I feel compelled to repeat everything I hear

This time we bolstered the artifacts archetype, cheating, big mana, and lands matter.
Consuming Vapors (Skinrender)
Ok this swap is not really related to any of the mentioned archetypes, we just wanted to give Vapors another shot and noticed that 'Render didn't see an awful lot of play.

Mishra's Workshop
Crucible of Worlds (Mimic Vat)
Metalworker
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
The Eldrazi was a bit of a surprise even for us I think all of these are understandable additions considering what we're shooting for.
Knight of the Reliquary (Bloodbraid Elf)
Yasova Dragonclaw
The knight is for 'lands matter', obviously. We never ran this card so no idea how good this really is. Testing Yasova.
Finally, we re-added these:
Evolving Wilds
Terramorphic Expanse
And there it is, one of the more psychedelic updates of 2014! Happy holidays everyone.

What is the reasoning behind the Flametongue Kavu cut?
I am not sure that Ojutai Exepmlars are the real deal, I guess they could be decent in some variety of UW deck, but 2WW seems like a lot of mana for that.
"What am I looking at? Ashes, dead man."

I can see FTK not making main decks, it is a good card but does not necessarily do what you want a four mana card in your red deck to do.
It is a good thing that you test the Exemplars, some cards can't really be evaluated just on paper.
"What am I looking at? Ashes, dead man."
