I thought this might be cool to share. This is a list of all the Magic sets, and which ones have had the biggest impact on my cube. This is sorted by where the cards were originally printed, not the sets they were re-printed in, or the versions I use in my cube. Just which sets had the biggest influence on the cube with the cards that made an original showing in their set. Have a look-see:

When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
I thought it was cool that I still had 20 Tempest originals in the cube. That's awesome to me. I loved that set.
And Scars is only temporarily a one-hit-wonder.
Me too, I think that is the set where they finally figured out people don't like playing with crap. I started during Legends and wow were sets terrible back then. You kids and your fancy power creep have it much nicer now.
Ya. I've been playing since just before Ice Age came out. I remember buying packs of... Fallen Enpires, when there were Revised packs on the shelf next to it.

That's really funny because I have almost exactly the same story, I remember I was still a kid and finally saved up enough money to split a box of cards with a friend using allowance money. This was before the internet or spoilers and the new set was Fallen Empires (we had no idea what was in it and were really excited). So I basically payed $50 for some Hymn to Tourachs. I remember I just kept opening packs wondering where all the good cards were.

This happened to me with Chronicles back in the day. They reprinted all the worst cards from the early sets, instead of all the good ones (City of Brass and Blood Moon aside). The only thing it was good for was giving people the Urzatron (if they didn't already have it).
Edit: Also, I'm like 10 posts away from 10K. Crazy.

I think I hate chronicles like you hate Portal, absolutely despise that set and the cards just looked so hideous with white borders and that awful ink they used. They even managed to piss off a bunch of collectors by plummeting the value of a number of cards that used to be a lot more expensive (the original Elder Dragon Legends were highly sought after even though they were bad). That set was made completely of fail.
My first box was Fallen Empires. I didn't even know enough then to realize how bad the cards were. Sigh.
I also thought Chronicles was cool at the time because it was all these old cards that I'd never be able to get otherwise. Now, I see what they reprinted versus what they could've reprinted and it's really sad. Chronicles was really crappy.
What Homelands card are you running, wtwlf? I can't think of anything cubeworthy in that set.

Of course. I like all this nostaglia. I started playing right around 4th/Ice Age before Homelands came out. It's one of the reasons I love the cube, because cards from almost all eras of Magic are still relevant and have a chance to shine.
Chimeric Idol is still played in a lot of cubes, though it's only a matter of time before he is outclassed multiple times over isn't included in anyone's list aside from maybe C/U cubes.

I had to do it manually. Deckstats only gave me the most current printing.

Oh my god, I totally forgot that was from Homelands. For some reason I thought it was from The Dark. OK, so that set does have a cubeworthy card.

Ya, but Memory Lapse is really the only card that's still cubeworthy. Poor homelands.
There's Serrated Arrows, Primal Order and Merchant Scroll too.
Autumn Willow used to be a complete bomb. Ihsan's Shade was a decent 1-of back in the day. Koskun Falls was the original control enchantment. Sengir Autocrat saw some play back in the day. And Spectral Bears was a sideboard card in a pro tour caliber deck. And I had An-Zerrin Ruins in some sideboards way back when.
So all in all, it's not too bad a set.
