We were able to get a 6-man cube in last night! Definitely a weird draft. Blue was wide open the whole draft, as we had 5 blue cards in one pack at the end of pack 1. However, I didn't jump ship and stayed in my Golgari plan.
Round 1 I played the Mono Green deck and got run over by Nemesis of Mortals and Roar of the Wurm. His deck was pretty cool. I ended up going 1-2 in that match.
There were only two rounds, since the pair down lost. One of the 5-color decks beat the Rakdos deck, and the other 5-color deck beat the pair down.
My buddy took his 50 card 5-color deck to victory! Whatever works? hahaha
I have long thought that *always* building a 40 card deck is a mistake. If your deck needs cards that have specific roles in specific ratios... that seems more important than drawing any one particular card an extra small % of the time.
Going to 50 is a bit far for me, but I don't see a problem with 41 or 42 card decks if the cards make the deck better.
Made some aesthetic changes today. I added in the tapped lands from Invasion. Functionally the same thing as the allied guildgates, but old border and star foil (which I love way more).
I'm also trying out Fanatic. I've found that aggro really likes the creatures that do damage when they enter to top their curve. Redcap, Champion, Bloodhunter, Pierce Strider. I think the Fanatic will get at least 2 damage average, which has already proven to be good.
I think the Squire will see way more play than the Angel, especially since it's more easily splashed. Plus, the effect is tremendous.
Predator's Howl is instant.. and can be a super blowout, whereas Menace has been losing favor recently, and Morbid has proven to be easy to turn on, so I can definitely see some EoT 3x 2/2 duders coming into play.
What's up guys?! It's been 2 weeks since the last cube, but I was able to get one in last night. We did a 5-man draft. It was the last cube of Season #2! I'll get more into that later.
Anyways, I P1P1 Bloodhunter Bat, pick up some black and white cards early in pack one and hope to go Orzhov. I wanted to pick up some token makers since I picked up a Blood Artist, but the cards dried up. I snapped up some blue late pack 1 and eventually found my way into a heavy counterspell U/B control deck. I was able to snatch up a lot of counterspells:
.
I ran 7 creatures! haha. And a Guardian Idol. The deck came out really solid.. really controlling.
The decks were: U/B (me), Mono Red, Mono Green, 4-color, and Orzhov.
Round 1 I played the mono red deck. Game 1 he didn't have a turn 1 play. He may have missed a turn 2 creature also. I do remember countering a bunch of things, removing his creatures with Shriekmaw + Undying Evil, and eventually smashing with Guardian Idol over and over leaving counter mana up. Ideal! Game 2 I turn 1 Inquisition, counter his turn 3 play, evoke Shriekmaw and Undying Evil it in response to the sac trigger, and leave counter mana up and bash with Shriekmaw. Slaughtered :).
Round 2 was very interesting. I was playing the 4-color value deck. Game 1 was a lot of draw-go.. a type of game I love playing since I'm running 5 counters. Anyways, it gets to the point where I tap out to get a solid army of fliers out including Bloodhunter Bat and Tower Geist, along with Shriekmaw. The next turn I attack with everyone. I had no blockers for his swing back and I knew he had bloodbraid elf in his hand due to my Inquisition earlier. However, he represented 8 points of damage on board: Briarpack Alpha, Sylan ranger, Elvish Mystic, and the Bloodbraid Elf he could cast. So with myself representing lethal, he had 1 turn to do something. I asked him.. "Do you run any burn in that deck?"... he casts bloodbraid and cascades into Electrolyze... getting me for exactsies. Tough loss. Game 2 was even crazier. Lots of draw going again, I Ostracize him taking a Deadwood Treefolk. However, I see his Darksteel Sentinel. It gets to the point where I just cast evoke Shriekmaw and Undying Evil it and keep up Rewind, Forbid, and Exclude. He's a 5, with no black or artifact creatures in play to block my 4/3 Shriekmaw, in which I can proliferate with my Contagion Clasp in play. So I'm representing lethal next turn. He main phases a Darksteel Sentinel, leaving up a blue and a red. I have 5 mana open, with Forbid, Rewind, and Exclude. I decide to Rewind it... and get Izzet Charmed. If I used either of my other 2 counters, I win the game. So it was some crazy games, but I ended up on the wrong side of the luck! Good games for sure.
The 4-color deck ended up winning the finals against Orzhov.
The season ended last Sunday and there was a two-way tie for the last spot in the playoffs. My two buddies are playing for the last spot as I'm typing this! It's Naya vs 5-color! 90 card sealed, best of 5! !!!!
The playoff is over! The Naya deck won, beating the 5-color deck with a barrage of tokens. The bracket for the championship is up! The date is TBD. If we cube tomorrow, we will just start Season 3. The finals will hopefully happen next week sometime, or next Sunday.
What's up guys?! We were able to get the 4-man Season 2 Championship Cube last night at my place. We decided to do Sealed, drafting the whole cube. At 390 cards, we had a few cards left over, but we just randomly through them into 2 piles.
Anyways, the decks were: U/B (me), Orzhov, Grixis, and 5-color.
This is the best of 5 remember.
Semi-Finals: I played the Grixis deck. He came out in Game 1 playing a turn 1 Jackal Pup, followed by a turn 2 Lightning Bolt and Gideon's Lawkeeper. Apparently he was Boros Aggro in game 1! I ended up turn 2'ing an Augur of Bolas, and then Bone Shredder and Calcite Snapper to shut down his aggro plans. He was also stuck on 3 lands. I managed to beat him quickly. He then sides into a Grixis deck for Game 2. I get him to low health in game 2, but I was also relatively low, so he proceeds to Acidic Soil for the draw. Game 3 I take thanks to Calcite Snapper and counterspells. He takes game 4. Game 5 I had him at 2 life, he stabilized, but then I topdecked Bloodhunter Bat and drained him for the win. I won the match 3-1-1.
Finals: The battle for Season 2 was between me and my buddy Ryan, playing his Orzhov token deck. Game 1, he was able to get cheap evasive dudes out early, and I couldn't block them with my ground utility guys, like Augur and Omenspeaker. He was able to play Lingering Souls for full value and out aggro me. Game 2 he just steals the game with an active Curse of Shallow Graves which I had no answer to. Game 3 I sideboarded green in for Trygon Predator, Wickerbough Elder, Prey Upon, and Fleetfeather Cockatrice. I end up stealing game 3 on a lethal swingback for 11 when he was at 11. Game 4 I was able to get some counterspells early and get my evasive beaters going. He ends up scooping and we go to game 5 for all the marbles. Game 5 I have a good hand, 2 counterspells and some action. We go back and forth for a bit. I end up stabilizing and start to take control towards the end of the game. However, he resolves a Falkenrath Noble and puts me at somewhat of a standstill, since I was at 4. I think I had Sea Gate Oracle, Omenspeaker, and Bloodhunter bat out. So I couldn't really afford to attack since I couldn't block the backswing. We end up going into topdeck mode. We both brick a few times, but he manages to topdeck Lingering Souls and casts it for full value. I draw a land for the turn and scoop. Tight tight match, but Orzhov wins.
It was a great match, but I lose my 2nd straight Championship match!! hahah. Anyways, Season 2 was a success and now we move on to Season 3 this Sunday.
Oh, btw, this game in from France today. Thank you to Sandraline Alters for this one:
Yeah! The season adds some fun and competitiveness to the cube. I have a bunch of guys who enjoy playing the cube and can make it consistently. I don't forget to remind them often how much I appreciate it.
Anyways, Vault Skirge, in my opinion, has success because he's a 1 drop evasive, lifelink creature that every deck can cast on turn 1.
I usually see him played in the grindy, aggressive decks, and 4-5 color decks.
His role is usually the same in the decks he's in. He usually just keeps poking away at people, gaining life in the process, and usually gaining back more than what you paid for him. Plus, he has the fringe scenario of wearing a Grafted Wargear or a Rancor or a Bonesplitter and becoming a wicked threat.
Rewind has been mediocre. Every time I've had it in my hand I just wish it was cheaper. I make the exception for Dismiss because cantripping is definitely worth it.
I'm probably going to keep it in until I add Quickling and Frost Lynx. Rewind will be one of the cuts.
I think I recall cutting the Cryptologist because I didn't want two looter effects in my cube. It's not necessarily a type of effect I'm pushing for in my blue section. I'd rather only play 1 of the two, and Merfolk Looter blocks better and requires no more mana after you play it. Granted, the Cryptologist has a better high end, but it was a close cut. Which one do you like more? The cryptologist?
I also prefer cryptologist to looter, although it's pretty close....it's nice that the looter can block in a pinch and potentially trade with something which cryptologist can never do by itself.
I promised to give some feedback after testing Acidic Soil. Yesterday we finally got around to it. One game it won the game, dealing the last 5 points, and the other game it came one turn too late. If I had drawn it the turn before, I would've won, dealing 7 with it.
So, thanks
Anytime my man! I'm glad it did well. The card has been insane in my cube. Great finisher for the aggro decks.
Enclave cryptologist is significantly better than merfolk looter. Even without the upside of being utterly lopsided sometimes, +1 loot activation compares very favorably to forcing a block. It "gives" you the extra turn you bought by blocking oftentimes by looting one turn faster.
After a brief hiatus, we're back! We got Season 3 kicked off with a 5-man cube last night.
I first picked Intangible Virtue (I know.. bold), and tried to see if I could wheel the Battle Screech and hopefully luck out and get passed some token makers. Unfortunately, that didn't pan out, as the Screech didn't even wheel and I didn't see much token producers. I eventually found myself in a mediocre Selesnya midrange deck. Definitely wasn't my most optimal build, but you win some and lose some.
The decks were: Selesnya (me), Orzhov, 5 color, Gruul, and Simic.
Round 1 I play the Orzhov deck and just get beat dooooown. Fliers got me, as I eat it to Bloodhunter Bat and Hypnotic Specter.. with help from Undying Evil and Reanimate. He hosed me game 2 as well. Quick 0-2 for big dog....
I got the bye Round 2.. unfortunately.. or fortunately??? Matter of perspective? haha. My deck was poor. :(. Anyways, the Orzhov deck played the 5 color deck. It was the finals since the pair down lost. The Orzhov deck met Firespout and lost in 3 games.
We were able to get a cube draft in last night. It's been a while since I've done a midweek cube, but I got one in! I was actually able to pick up two new cubers last night as well. We had 5, but with addition of the new guys we were able to fire off a 7 man last night. After the draft, since they enjoyed it, I got their numbers and added them to the "invite to cube" list. It's always nice to get fresh faces to the playgroup and hopefully they can become regulars! I bet you can have a whole thread on just Networking and Expanding your Playgroup, since I think that's actually an important part of being a cube manager. We don't only have to manage our cubes, but managing our playgroups is an ongoing process as well.
Anyways, we got 7 last night. I first picked Tower Geist and finished the rest of pack 1 without taking a single blue card.. .:(. It was funny though, blue was wide open all draft, but I just didn't go into it. I ended up with a Junk deck, playing a bunch of recursion type creatures and effects.
The decks were: Junk (me), Gruul, Gruul, Mono Blue, Selesnya, Orzhov, and I want to say 4 or 5 color?? maybe??
Round 1 I play the Selesnya deck. I resolve my turn 5 or 6 Cloudgoat Ranger in game 1. He didn't have removal, but he had a decent ground force. I just swung for 5 flying with the Ranger for 3 straight turns and eventually Snuff Outed his Stingerfling Spider he was using as a blocker. Game 2 I turn 5 Cloudgoat Ranger and proceed to do the same thing. I win 2-0.
Round 2 I played the Orzhov deck. Game 1 he comes out quick, with his little 2/1 fliers and his Lingering Souls tokens. He manages to rock me pretty handily. Game 2, I mull to 5 and manage to cast my Golgari Charm on all his X/1's. I stabilize with Pharika's Mender and win the game. Game 3, it goes back and forth for a bit, until he gives me two draw steps as I'm dead in two turns with Lingering Souls tokens and a Spined Thopter. I end up topdecking Firespout, wipe his board, and resolve Pharika's Mender and proceed to win the game. Definitely a lucky top deck.. and only 1 of my 2 outs (Golgari Charm), but hey.. it happens!
The finals was, surprisingly, against Mono Blue. I was really excited to see Mono blue in the finals, since it's a deck I don't see often. Game 1 was super long, as he countered everything relevant I played. It went back and forth for a while, with him stealing my stuff, and me flickering it or destroying the enchantment. I eventually out value him with my recursion.. and Black Curse... (which blue has really no great way to deal with it), and win the game. Game 2 goes a little faster, as I, again, slam a turn 4 Black Curse and outvalue him with my recursion. Cards like Custodi Squire, Unburial Rites, Pharika's Mender, Deadwood Treefolk (a card I didn't main... and hate myself for not.. won't make that mistake again.. I must have forgot about him!), just outvalued him and outlasted his counters.
We got a 4-man cube in last night. I first picked a red creature (the only one in the pack) and decided to see if a R/x aggro deck was open.
I managed to pick up a bunch of red and white creatures and went Boros aggro.
The decks were: Boros (me), Junk, 4 color, and U/W/R.
Round 1 I played the Junk deck. Game 1 I manage to draw the game with a timely Flame Rift. Game 2 and 3 I just remember out aggroing him.
In the finals, I played the 4 color deck. Game 1 he gets a Bubbling Cauldron in play and I think I'm toast. However, I fight through 2 activations of the Cauldron and when he taps out to lethal me with a Fireball for exactsies, I Harm's Way 2 of it back to him and win on the swing back. Game 2 was uninteresting as I mull to 6 and get stomped with a 1 lander. Game 3 I manage to just out aggro him and finish him with burn.
So Boros Aggro takes the cake and I win my 2nd cube in a row!
Also, I'm going to try the two Knights -- Knight of Glory and Knight of Infamy. I've avoided them for quite some time because of the protection, but I want to test them. I'll pick them up tomorrow and add them in. Hopefully they don't mise people too often because I think they are very good 2 drop creatures.

Draft my Peasant Cube on Cube Cobra !!!
So I won the draft with this brewski:
1x Gideon's Lawkeeper
1x Perilous Myr
1x Sylvan Ranger
1x Tidehollow Sculler
1x Flickerwisp
1x Murderous Redcap
1x Marsh Flitter
1x Glimmerpoint Stag
1x Blind Hunter
1x Cloudgoat Ranger
1x Pharika's Mender
1x Custodi Squire
1x Gut Shot
1x Sunlance
1x Regrowth
1x Golgari Charm
1x Evolution Charm
1x Terror
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Read the Bones
1x Snuff Out
1x Unburial Rites
1x Curse of Shallow Graves
Land (17)
6x Swamp
6x Plains
4x Forest
1x Golgari Guildgate
Power Rankings: This is Custodi Squire's 1st win!
Season 3 (Draft #2 of 24): Gideon's Lawkeeper and Regrowth are tied for 1st, winning both drafts of the Season so far.
My Peasant Cube thread !!! (380 cards)
Draft my Peasant Cube on Cube Cobra !!!
Here's the list:
1x Reckless Waif
1x Frenzied Goblin
1x Jackal Pup
1x Gore-House Chainwalker
1x Lightning Mauler

Power Rankings: This is Fanatic of Mogis's 1st win!

Draft my Peasant Cube on Cube Cobra !!!
OUT Prescient Chimera //// IN Quickling
OUT Rewind //// IN Frost Lynx
OUT Flames of the Blood Hand //// IN Stoke the Flames
OUT Everflame Eidolon //// IN Borderland Marauder
OUT Trusted Forcemage //// IN Reclamation Sage
Still considering Altac Bloodseeker and maybe Ancient Silverback, but most likely I won't include them.
