I've taken a nice long break from magic and cube in general, with work getting super busy and the holidays. I'm hoping to get back into cube within the next week or two!
We finally got a 4-man cube draft in the other night.
The winner was a Grixis deck. It had a few strange things going on... (like running Bloodbraid elf with 2 counterspells in the deck), but sometimes a deck just gets there! haha.
Several years ago I copied your list for my own cube and have had fun with it. I followed your suggestions until you did the big overhaul (2016?) but just couldn’t bring myself to make such grand changes. I thought I liked the cube as is, however, many more drafts in, I now see the problem with it and why you changed it up.
The blink strategy combined with the value creatures led to too many of the same type decks winning time and time again. A friend of mine constantly drafts 4 or 5 color and dominates any two color strat I decide to draft. I don’t think peasant cube should be this way. So, I’ve finally decided to update mine to be in line with yours again and look forward to seeing how it plays out. Thanks for your dedication to this forum and constant updates.
Quick questions: Looking back, are you glad you moved away from the value based synergy in the original builds? Also, can you speak to the importance of some of these cards? I rarely draft them and don’t see them on the table much. Bubbling Cauldron, thoughtpicker witch, wight of precinct six, and stonewright.
Also, what do you consider the first pickable bombs? I feel like good removal is always at the top of my list but past that, what do you like to take and feel wins the most games?
Last question (I promise!): how would you do a two person draft? This is how I play most often and my friend and I have developed a system but, I’m curious on your opinion with this list in mind.

Im out of town for the Superbowl, but I’ll gladly sit down tomorrow and fully answer these questions! GO PATS!!!
May I ask what your system is? Always interested in new ways to draft.
We draft 1v1 almost exclusively, and have been very happy with Glimpse draft (detailed here). The only difference is that we 'burn' 2 cards at random after each pick instead of choosing what to remove. This is purely because it's faster and we like the uncontrolled element.
[/quote]
My friend and I do a similar system. We do 9 packs of eleven. First pack you draft one then pass. Second pack you take two, burn two, then pass. Third pack you take two and burn the rest (4). This leaves you with 45 from which to build. We have done this for a long time and haven’t really had any issues.
Your method seems fun and I’m interested in the random burn. We may give it a shot next time we draft.

It's funny you mention the 4-5 color value decks dominating. My playgroup and I refer to this time in my cube as the "dark ages". There were too many drafters just slamming all these EtBs into their decks, combined with reanimation effects and blink effects, and it overwhelmed the cube. I'm glad you found this out on your own though. It's important that you felt what that's like yourself so you can understand why I did what I did. It was the best decision I've ever made and I'm very happy at where the cube is.
Bubbling Cauldron is sort of a "pet card" for me. I like adding some life gain into the cube, and I also think that this card is quite good in the right deck. It essentially turns all of your opponents' removal into 4 life, while also neutralizing Mind Control and threaten effects. It's also very fun with Blood Artist and Falkenrath Noble. Not a staple, but a decent card that I enjoy.
Thoughtpicker Witch... if you never achieved the soft lock on your opponent with this card.. you've never lived. Great in the token/sacrifice deck.
Wight of Precinct Six gets big very quickly. I like playing him in control decks, where I'm countering your creatures on the way down while also packing lots of creature removal. Having him be a 4/4-6/6 for 2 mana is a huge advantage in the control deck when your keeping mana up to do things at instant speed.
Stonewright is close to the best 1 drop in Mono red.
First pickable bombs... I think there is a small amount of cards that are on a higher power level than the rest of the cube. Some of the old school cards like Lighting Bolt, Demonic Tutor, Counterspell, City of Brass, Clone... that are obviously a lot strong than the majority of commons/uncommons that you see printed now are great candidates for me to 1st pick. I also like picking splashable 2 for 1s like Flametongue, Shriekmaw, Treasure Cruise..
Maybe I'll 1st pick an archetype card like Pelakka Wurm or Oketra's Monument. The great thing about Peasant is that most of our cards are on a similar power level, minus a small handful. Sometimes it's just a mood thing. If I played the Pelakka Wurm ramp deck last draft and want something different, perhaps I'll take a blue counter or a red hasty guy 1st pick, even if I see the Wurm in pack 1.
My two person drafts don't happen often, because I've been fortunate enough to grab 4-6 man pods on a consistent basis. However, when I do run 2-mans, I like running a Winston draft.
Any thought to slotting in Golden Demise over one of the other -2/-2 effects? That card is an absolute beating in RIX limited.
Not really. The card seems fine, but I don't like it over what I'm running now.
+1 mana is worth the instant speed on Hideous Laughter.
Having an out to the Blood Artist/token drain plan is worth the Flaying Tendrils slot.
If I was to add another one in, I'd probably just want Drown in Sorrow.. I like instant gratification, not waiting until I have a 10 permanents in play to get an upside.
I included the Masters 25 editions and put them in the pool so they could be seen!
I made it to the finals with my R/G Monsters deck against a Grixis deck. It was a real quick finals as I mulled to 3 game 1 and got stuck on 2 lands in game 2. Happens! We played 3 more games for fun afterwards. I won all 3!! However, I'm not technically the winner, so here's the Grixis deck!
We got a 6-man cube draft in on Friday night. I put all 12 Dominaria cards in the pool so they could get tested! I ended up in an Izzet aggro/tempo deck and won the draft with it! I was able to snag Skizzek out of the Dominaria stuff and he was fantastic. I timed him right, kicked it, and got in for 5. The card is good.
That deck is 1 Tetsuo Umezawa away from being a little bonkers
Funny you mention that.
I actually still have to post a winner from last Thursday (another blue aggro deck), but the blue tempo/aggro deck has become on the premier decks in the format. Actually to the point where I think I have over-supported the archetype. It's actually become a bit oppressive to be honest. Most of my early 2 drop blue creatures are aggro-oriented, so I'll be focusing on mixing that up a bit more.
I'm going to be making a small change to blue overall to try to cut down the support of the aggro/tempo cards for some more control cards. In earlier versions of the cube, I completely supported control in blue. You had little to no evasive 2 drops, and many card draw spells and finisher creatures. Then I shifted into supporting aggro in blue, and it started taking off, especially as of late, with all the good blue evasive duders. Now I think it's a bit over-supported and I want to make control GREAT AGAIN! Whether that's a blue only problem, or a speed of the cube problem... starting with blue is certainly the plan. I'm going to be cutting some of the evasive 2 drops for some utility creatures, and perhaps adding some of the big hexproof fatties at the top end.
We got a 4-man cube about a week and a half ago. I just went on a cruise with the wife and have been stalling out on the cube front. I'm still trying to get them in on occasion, but certainly not as often as I used to.
We got a cube draft in last week and I piloted a sweet U/B Control deck to victory. I had all my M19 cards added and was able to snag a few in my deck.
What's up everybody? I know it's been a while, but here's another winner from the other night! I took it again! I've been on a little streak here. I played mono blue, piloting a few of the new cards.
Woah.. I'm finally back from about a month break from cubing. The holiday season was busy and I just completely took time off. I haven't even looked at Ultimate Masters, but I'll get those updates up soon.
Here's is a winning list from the last time I cubed that I forgot to put up. This was probably about a month ago. It was a Abzan deck.
I've taken a nice long break from magic and cube in general, with work getting super busy and the holidays. I'm hoping to get back into cube within the next week or two!
