I'm always hesitant to play Child of Night because of the one-toughness thing.
She really shines with equipments; one time, a friend got the smart idea to pair her up with the Viridian Longbow. In one game, he went Longbow > Child of Night > Equip. Yeah, he won that game.
I'm currently revamping my Artifacts section, both to make it better and it increase it's size. Anyway, I came across a gem of a blue card: Wizard Replica.
If anyone was at the Kird Ape Fiasco (or the Exalted Angel Dilemma), they'd know that I'm going to put it in blue. So, the following change:
Comment: Looking at what artifacts are costed 1 or less, Trinket Mage will often just be a Grey Ogre. Wizard Replica is just, everything blue wants: super, super splashable, a sizeable blocking body (with evasion), a counter threat. If the worst thing it does is delay the opponent from playing his spells until he two turns later, he's done his job!
Comment: Looking at other Pauper Cubes, I stumbled onto the Spiketail. It's just like the Replica, but helps aggro-control instead of control, and I like blue to dabble. Thornwind Faeries is a sad but reasonable cut; I love pingers, and especially ones in blue, but the Thornwind's color-intesive cost on such a small creature is weird. Plus, the flying confuses me: what's the flying for, if I'm going to be pinging with it all the time? So, trade~
Edit: Revamped artifact section up to 55 cards!
Edit: Small revamp of the high CMC in the Black Creatures section~
Comment: How the heck did I overlook this Pauper staple? Anyway, Bog Tatters as always been an unconscious pet card of mine, and now it leaves, for the superior recursion beast.
Comment: A shaky change; I really wanted to put in the Shinobi, which can be crazy at times, but I was cuaght for a decision. In the end, I decided on the House Guard, because it will almost never live up to its potential in this kind of environment.
Edit: Slight revamp of the White Spells section (CMC 3+)
Hey Lanxal, had a look through your cube, it's pretty damn hot. Seeing some Un-cards warmed my heart
Just a few comments.
Looking through blue, Tidewater Minion seems really bad... I can't really understand why he's there. I also have to agree with Fred, Ray of Command is definitely worth putting in, it's a one-of-a-kind effect for blue. I would probably cut Peel from Reality; it got the cut from my cube. Plus, you have AEther Tradewinds anyway. Also, a blue critter who has being doing really well in my cube is Shimmering Glasskite; it's exactly the kind of hard-to-deal with beater control decks need to seal the deal. Plus, this guy is so hot in foil. Let me know when you get the verdict on Number Crunch.
In green, I'm surprised to see Nest Invader missing (you've got Kozilek's Predator). I haven't played a lot with this guy, but I'm pretty sure he won't disappoint.
Architects of Will seems a bit meh with all of the quality UB cards around, like Tidehollow Strix, Teachings and Probe, but I guess the cycling seems quite nice. Steamcore Wierd is also amazing, especially when combined with bounce like Jilt and Repulse, but admittedly the UR cards you have are four of the best. Also, where is Snakeform?
Hope this helps. If you have time, I would really appreciate if you could have a flick through my pauper cube and tell me what you think, it's still in its (relative) infancy at the moment.
Thank you, kirby. You've saved me from making that last post longer.
Tidewater Minion, as I've defended time and time again, is awesome. It's untapping ability is surprisingly relevant a lot of the time, and when you've gotten to the point where you can attack with it (assuming you're using it in a control deck), it will kill a creature or dome for four. It's one of my favourite blue finishers.
Agree on the Ray of Command, but like I said, I want to try out Peel so more.
The Glasskite has come up in the past, and I'm quite interested, but I wouldn't know what to cut without further testing. I'll get back to you on that.
I will! I don't think it'll leave for Regress, though, because it is 100% better.
Nest Invader is good, but not better than my other green creatures without further testing. If I get the chance, I'll definitely put it in.
Comment: My playgroup never really liked LD, so I've been trying to keep that to a minimum (read: none at all). I've been keeping Molten Rain in here for quite a while, and I think it'll never be as fun as I want it to be, so out it comes for Magma Burst.
And on Magma Burst, I initially thought it wouldn't be so good, but a few games of the Cube shows me that it's exactly the kind of card I want; a late-game answer, when lands become redundant. So sad you can't hit the dome for six.
The card reads ''Another target'' and you can see that the rules thing when you click on it says that it has to be another target also. No 6 to the dome for Magma Burst.
Comment: Taking out the placeholder red burn for another X-burn spell. Looking over my cube, it's pretty obvious that I've got a color-wide graveyard-matters theme, so I'm going to give red an answer for recursion with this sweet burn.
Comment: A very tough swap. I want to try out the Uprising, which can net awesome card advantage (idea, again, from kirbydabomb). I just don't think the Unburden will ever be as good as it could be, in a different cube.
I don't know how much I like Urborg Uprising. It's nice, but I think I like Unburden a lot more. They're both card advantage, but in black I prefer to take cards away from my opponent more than providing cards for myself. If they cards were similarly priced or even if Uprising were only one mana less, I could get on board with this swap. As it is, though... I don't much care for it. I found that the times I wanted to cast a spell at sorcery speed that returns dudes from my graveyard to my hand were slim to none. So much so that Death Denied has found it's way into and back out of both my rare and my common/uncommon cube.
I want to try the Uprising a bit. If it doesn't stack up, I'll take it back out. So sad that I haven't gotten a chance to try out the Unburden at all; perhaps I'll playtest it with it as well, in the future.
I was looking over Un-cards at common and I'd definitely try to get Double Header in here. It has a ton of targets since most permanents are double-worded, including all but 2 bouncelands. It seems like it'd be pretty close to a Riftwing Cloudskate without suspend, especially considering the relatively small size of fliers in the format. I'd probably cut Prohibit for it, which seems like a pretty weak counterspell.
I'd also probably try to get Gerrard's Irregulars in here. It's the commons equivalent of Giant Solifuge. It can unfortunately be killed by spells, but if not (which I found was the case pretty often) it's taking something with it. I'd probably take Lightning Hounds out (and move Gathan Raiders) to 3 CMC. I think the other options at 4 are better, including the craghorn.
I'd also replace Lairwatch Giant, which I think is a pretty meh creature, for Noble Templar. Fixing, huge defense and even a semi-relevant tribe (and I'd try to get the m10 Soldier lords in there, especially the 3/2)
I remember not liking Double Header because I thought it was a bit restrictive. Looking over my cube, I do like it now. Lots of targets. And yeah, Prohibit is a bit weak; nice swap.
Same with Double Header, I remember chancing upon Gerrard's Irregulars but not liking it fully because it would die too easily. I'll try it out; again, easy swap for Lightning Hound.
The problem I have with Frazzled Editor is clarification on what counts as a line of text. Does flavor text count? Reminder text? But yes, I'll probably add it soon, taking out the Bogardan Lancer, and say that any text is a line of text.
Mesa Chicken... I don't know, it seems like it'll get annoying for a while. It'd be powerful with a player who didn't mind, but I can't see my playgroup enjoying doing it every turn.
Agreed. Lairwatch was just a placeholder card. Noble Templar is very interesting; another easy swap.
The thing is, I can't do any changes right now, because I've already made the boosters for Group Draft V Pauper Edition, and it'd be confusing for people who are checking my Cube. But, I'll make a list of changes to put in the moment the Group Draft ends.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
Comment: Scroll up to Usman's reply, then read down for the discussion on these cards. Also, I've decided against adding Land Aid. Firstly, it's color intensive, and secondly, I like the rest of my other green ramps (because they're not mana intensive).
Aaaand... M11 updates, as cards are spoiled. To conserve space, they're all going here.
Comment: Sandstorm never really lived up to its hype, so sadly, it gets the cut. Outrage is an excellent role-fulling burn, to kill annoying fatties and still go in for dome.
Comment: I came to a realisation that Echoing Truth is only good against tokens, which is not good enough. I don't like it anymore. I do like the new scrying cantrip. Simple as that!
Comment: A perfect swap. Making my cube more color-intensive is no issue, as they are both double green. Trading recursion with just the most deadly beating.
Comment: Another perfect swap, with same casting cost and P/T. I'm sad to see the Avenger go, but sadly, gotta take one for the team. And I don't want to make the "I'm strengthening Threshold!" shpeel here.
Comment: Let me say it now: I don't think Greater Basilisk is anything to go "WOWSERS" at, but it's not too shabby. Taking out the card I've been meaning to take out for a while.
I think maybe you could cut Fire Whip for Act of Treason. I'm not big on aura's anyway because of their potential to get me 2-for-1'ed, and this seems incredibly week for the risk.
Also, funny that you don't care for Flood when it was getting a lot of talk about how it seems ridiculous in this pauper format over in the Group Draft thread.
I don't know about cutting Fire Whip. The last time it was played, it was just incredible. If you have a ready creature, it translates to a lesser Arc Lightning. If they don't have ready removal, it becomes a better Arc Lightning. But I've only seen it played once, so we'll have to see; I do agree that removal-in-response would suck, big time. I'll need to playtest it a bit more. Thanks for the suggestion, though!
Hahaha, maybe they'll prove me wrong. We'll see when we finish the Group Draft; for now, what else do you think can go for Preordain? I have Serum Visions, Ponder and Brainstorm taking the roles of cheap top-fixing. Do you think one more is too many? Should I just cut the Vision for it?
You could cut Gush for it. I don't like that card at all for any cube, even Pauper. It was good in it's hey day because it was played in decks with a lot of free spells and a lot of cheap spells. In the cube, however, returning two islands to your hand is very detrimental to your game plan, especially in blue. At least with Fathom Seer, the ability comes strapped to a creature. Preordain seems much better than Gush, IMO.
Even on turns 5 and 6 Gush is clunky. Returning two Islands is such a huge set back even on those turns. Going from six lands on turn six to four lands on turn six is so bad. At that point I'd much rather just pay one for my Preordain or even four for my Deep Analysis.
Fred is right - Gush is sick. Don't forget the whole return-land-replay-land business, it's not as clunky as you'd think. Instant speed is also useful to dig. I would definitely cut Serum Visions for Preordain.
Also, why has Pestermite gone? This guy is amazing and definitely deserves to stay. Even without the tapping business a 2-power flier with Flash is very useful for control decks (I even run Sentinels of Glen Elendra). And also, don't forget the Mite taps (or untaps) permanents - many times I have basically Time Walked by tapping a Bounceland during my opponent's upkeep.
Shaper Parasite definitely deserves a place though - I've 3-for-1'd a person with it before.
Even on turns 5 and 6 Gush is clunky. Returning two Islands is such a huge set back even on those turns. Going from six lands on turn six to four lands on turn six is so bad. At that point I'd much rather just pay one for my Preordain or even four for my Deep Analysis.
Pretty much this. When I saw the Gush pick in the pauper group cube draft, I thought "replace it with Mysteries of the Deep, it's better as it's pretty much a Concentrate" and saw that's already in here. I'd rather have Train of Thought, it scales pretty well and it's very good in my experience.
No matter how many expensive cards there are, Gush is still detrimental unless it's turn 15 and you've got 12 lands in play. Any time before that, I'd rather have just about any other draw spell. I agree with Usman. Even Train of Thought at sorcery speed is better.
Hmm... a lot of people getting behind Pestermite. Okay, then I'll cut Spellstutter Sprite instead (which I've been meaning to cut for a while).
Everyone's kind of split on Gush. I think I'll move this to the Card Evaluation thread, for more discussion.
Edit: Okay, Gush > Train of Thought (I've got this on the main changes post here, which will be my main changes post until the end of Group Draft). Also, cutting Echoing Truth instead of Flood, because most of the time, it's just a terrible bounce.
I love both Child of Night and Scuzzlebutt. Good stuff.

Swirling Sandstorm → Chandra's Outrage
Comment: Sandstorm never really lived up to its hype, so sadly, it gets the cut. Outrage is an excellent role-fulling burn, to kill annoying fatties and still go in for dome.
Elvish Visionary → Sylvan Ranger
Comment: Ranger is better 60% of the time, so cut the Visionary. Maybe it'll come back.
Martyr of Frost → Æther Adept
Comment: Taking out the weak counter critter for the sexy Man-o'-War almost copy.
Echoing Truth → Preordain
Comment: I came to a realisation that Echoing Truth is only good against tokens, which is not good enough. I don't like it anymore. I do like the new scrying cantrip. Simple as that!
Vampire Aristocrat → Liliana's Specter

Primal Growth → Cultivate

Plated Sliver → Caravan Escort
Comment: Change of opinion. Though I love the sliver, it's extra toughness doesn't do much. Let's try out this leveler.
Kiln Fiend → Suq'Ata Lancer
Comment: Don't worry about this change. Fiend just wasn't stacking up.
Spellstutter Sprite → Shaper Parasite
Comment: I love the Pestermite. Love it to death. But removal calls, and I need to make tough decisions.
