Of course Las Vegas is the place to be for glamor, glitz and scantily clad showgirls... but what do you do when the tables just aren't kind and those slots eat up your last quarter?
Play Pauper Magic of course!
I've always loved budget Magic in all its forms and this cube is no different. It brings the best of the best black expansions symbols (and plenty without) together in one neat, little white box. More cards is more fun in my opinion so the cube's currently set to run up to 10 players, though this is mostly to keep the picks varied from one 8 man draft to another.
As of now, the Cube runs through Alara Reborn. Once I get some advice, I'll add anything of note from M10 (Doom Blade comes to mind) and make more changes, or possibly wait for Zendikar for a big update.
This is only my first run through a cube, so the numbers might be a bit off at first, but this is why I'm coming to you guys for advice. Thanks to anyone who can help us out! I'll be getting the spreadsheet as well as an analysis and possibly pictures once it's all settled, sleeved and ready to go.
I think that's way too much multicolor... especially in Pauper where the gold cards are so sub par. I'd rather use more, higher quality mono-colored cards and remove lots of the gold stuff.
(my last game of pauper magic was before the extended rotation, so I probably cna't give you that much of a helpful comment for your cube.)
These are all decent options, of which my pauper cubes shared almost all of them. I think there's some room to upgrade and focus the effects of colors by building redundancy (i.e. multiple "tappers" in white, "pingers" in blue and red, mana ramp effects in green, etc.).

I actually have 50 gold and hybrid combined, but significantly more allied colors than enemy. There are better choices available in the allied pairs and you might be able to switch some of the weaker enemy color choices (Poison the Well, for example) into good allied choices (like Ethercaste Knight).
Yes. A thousand times yes. They lured me in with Ivory Tower and Zuran Orb, and I kept telling myself "I can quit whenever I want...just look at that untapped disk". That was ten years ago man.....
@Eidolon232: That's a great list you posted, I'm actually surprised that some of those weren't on my list to begin with. (Which is exactly why I decided to post this in the first place) I'll definitely be making some changes now.
Now to figure out what exactly I should cut to fit these cards in... Any recommendations on some card-for-card swaps?
@wtwlf123 & Zerin Karamoff: The number of gold/hybrid cards I included was definitely something I meant to ask about. At first, I was just looking for some even numbers to fill out my Cube, but now that I've seen it actually written out, I wanna fix it up.
So would you recommend cutting some of the gold and hybrid (I'll admit, I was stretching things a bit to fill up some spots) for more Mono-Colored goodness, or keep all the gold, but focus more on allied pairs, which do have quite a few more choice commons to choose from?
I was thinking something like:
-1 each Gold combination (10)
-1 each Allied hybrid (5)
-2 each Enemy hybrid (10)
This would give me room for another 5 cards in each color while cutting some of the chaff I had to include to meet my first set of numbers.
Also what do you guys think of the Blade cycle from Alara Reborn? I threw them in as something interesting and they're far from horrible, I just don't know if they've got the support they need to be consistently good.

If you're going to run more allied color pairs than enemy ones, I'd balance out the land and artifact color fixing to reflect that. So, if you end up with 5 of each allied combination and 3 of each enemy combination, I'd use 5 allied color mana-fixing cards and 3 enemy color mana-fixing cards (signets, bounce-lands, etc). That way, you end up drafting an appropriate amount of fixing for each combination supported (and you don't have too little WU fixing and tons of WU cards, and so on).
..........
On another note, I think that every single card from eidolon232's 1st list should go in.
Thanks a ton, eidolon. You're spot on with your suggestions and pointed out multiple cards I've been looking at myself. I'll be making a good amount of changes soon. I appreciated the help.
And wtfwlf123, glad you think those changes will work well. Do I have much in the way of mana fixing that I'd cut though? I'm not sure how too much of it (outside the Bouncelands and Signets) is specifically geared towards the Enemy combinations, though I may just be misunderstanding your post.
As for now, I'll keep the Blade cycle in, but if they keep going at 15th picks, I'll cut them for better cards.
Most of eidolon's cards will be included soon enough, just gotta pull out the box today and start the culling =)

What I mean is, if you have 5 allied color cards and 3 enemy color cards of each pair, you should use 5 allied color-fixing cards and 3 enemy color-fixing cards of each combination. Make sure the available fixing matches up to the available gold cards.
For example. Lets say you're using 5 WU cards and 3 UR cards. I would suggest that you balance the available fixing so you have 5 cards that add WU and 3 cards that add UR.

Got it, thanks for clearing that up. I've got the day off so I'll be fixing up the cube and posting my revisions either tonight or tomorrow.
On another note, I really like how active this forum is. It's good to see other people around willing to help out.

I think this is also dependent upon the fixing you're using. The full ten card cycle of Ravnica block "bounce" or "karoo" lands and signets are awesome. The lands from Invasion and Mirrodin block are some of the weakest you have now. The cycling lands aren't terrible and fit better in a larger cube (I cut mine to increase pack quality). Just trim some of the weaker fixing and cycles and you'll see improvement.
Yes. A thousand times yes. They lured me in with Ivory Tower and Zuran Orb, and I kept telling myself "I can quit whenever I want...just look at that untapped disk". That was ten years ago man.....
I have a few thoughts... cut the Ritual effects, I know very few ppl who have used them successfully more than once.
Paralyze isn't great.
COnsume Spirit should be Soul Burn
Gloom Lance is crap, I'm thinking Cruel Revival or Sever Soul.
I know you are cutting cards.. but IMO you need 0 morphs or more.
The Storm cards also raise an eyebrow.. but feel free to shut me up with any sort of story
I would ask about your slivers... has anyone really used them effectively.. if not that is a few cuts there.. but there are many so it is always plausable.
The light tribal cards like Wellwisher, Timberwatch, etc may or may not need reconsideration for their usefulness
I myself am anti-blade. I had them, and then cut them as you are forced to have more multicolor spells and as it stands I agree with the corwd on trimming that section there are many "playable" but not early choice worthy cards.
Your white seems "weak". Not the choices, the size. I will admit the "fat" in common white isn't the best, but even Siege Mastodon or some fat wall like Angelic would help the defensiveness white has in their creature diversity. Side note; Why Soltari Lancer? Visionary.. great card.. Foot SOldier.. sure.. heck.. Augur il-Vec is a mainstay in mine.
You can critisize my decisions, I will not take it personally, I just want more healthy Pauper discussion. That is why I am active on 3 forums.. I want to better my own by seeing things in a different way.

I don't think the blade cycle is horrible, but if I had the choice of seeing them or another card in a pack of mine, I'll almost always rather see card X.

Got it, thanks for clearing that up. I've got the day off so I'll be fixing up the cube and posting my revisions either tonight or tomorrow.
On another note, I really like how active this forum is. It's good to see other people around willing to help out.
EDH Decks:
- Reya Dawnbringer // - Mistform Ultimus // - Balthor the Defiled // - Urabrask the Hidden // - Mirri, Cat Warrior
