Basri Ket 1WW
Legendary Planeswalker - Basri
Loyalty: 3
+1: Put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature. It gains indestructible until end of turn.
-2: Whenever one or more nontoken creatures attack this turn, create that many 1/1 white soldier creature tokens that are tapped and attacking.
-6: You get an emblem with: "At the beginning of combat on your turn, create a 1/1 white soldier creature token, then put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control."
Seems decent, but doesn't do much without a board state (unlike the 4-drop walkers). Still, randomly doubling your attacks is good!
163 views and no comments? Guess I’ll start it off. This could be a pretty good card, but literally being useless by itself is a huge drawback. I think if he is good it will be on the back or spamming his -2. However I think he’s whites third best 3 drop pw.
As an aside was really hoping or a lorwyn or alara planeswalker. Flamekin Lorwyn faeries and goblins, all are aesthetically unique, whereas human from plane 47 is getting old
Seems bad. Needs a board to do anything, the +1 is pretty meh, the -2 is only good if you've curved out perfectly, and even the ult won't win you the game some of the time. If the +1 gave vigilance I'd be slightly more interested.
Doesn't help that there are 2 3cmc gideons that are just better.
If the indestructible lasted until your next turn maybe he'd be solid as board wipe insurance. As it stands your creatures are going to be winning combat until your opponent gets a decent blocker out which will hold back the rest of the team anyway. I'd say this card only has value for the -2 ability and I'd rather have Unbreakable Formation pretty much 100% of the time.

Perfect summary of my feelings. Basri is fine but I don't see how it breaks into most cubes. Maybe if you have a +1/+1 counters theme?
Reminds me too much of Ajani, Caller of the Pride. Planeswalkers that rely on you having a board presence have never been great, and this doesn't seem to be an exception.
I agree, but i don't think that means its impossible. Ajani Goldmane was pretty good in cube for a long time. I think a super pushed pw that needs outside help could be fine. domri, anarch of bolas had a lot of people thinking about including it recently.
As an aside, I want more AGGRO planeswalkers. I really feel like Sarkhan vol is the only PW that fits into aggro, that won't just get grabbed by a durdly superfriends deck.
I also thought of Ajani, Caller of the Pride right away, and we tested it and it was bad. I think this card is better, so I didn't want to jump to that comparison right away, but I don't think it's enough better to bother testing.
I also think it's a lot worse than Goldmane. Goldmane's +1 at least did something on an empty board, and more importantly his anthem -1 let you get good attacks and protect him because of the vigilence. He almost always represented at least +2/+2 forever for your whole team, and if your opponent wrathed you got to tick him up while redeploying threats and start the whole thing over. Also, I don't think goldmane is good enough anymore, so a substantially worse version of that card is not getting me excited.
Ajani, Caller of the Pride was actually among my faves, but I removed it because I already had too many Ajanis (this was pre- rules change).
I think this card is super cool, but I'm trying to find more cards that strengthen specific themes and he doesn't quite fit. Maybe if I wanted to try to make Hardened Scales archetype work he'd have a shot.
Lots of comparisons to other Planeswalkers here, but what about Hero of Bladehold as well?
My problems with Basri Ket is that while he does give you a turn 3 Hero effect, he doesn't protect himself while doing it. His pump ability is pretty marginal, and his ultimate is pretty expensive.
While all the abilities are desirable abilities, I think what this comparison brings to light - is that the goal you are trying to achieve is pretty important. Hero can offer repeatable effects more consistently to create stronger race scenarios and the appeal of a Planeswalker filling that role, is the ability to work around potential mass removal spells, which Basri doesn't do at all.

Yep, this is exactly what I was planning to do with him. I do like the Battlecry for go-wide support...might get rid of the Cat one. Hard choice honestly. I think the lifelink is probably stronger in more situations though.
I remember everyone (me included) was freaking out when original 3 mana ajani was spoiled and it proved to be worse than it looked because of that. I think? this is worse than that ajani, which is pretty deep in the archive at this point.
