Spells you cast that refer to artifacts or Contraptions in their rules text cost 1 less to cast
1/3
What is your opinion on this gal? She is exactly what I want for my cube since she makes good cards that care about artifacts but are not themselves artifacts like Pia and Kiran Nalaar cost less. Then again, she does not make artifacts that don't refer to artifacts in their rules text cost less, so maybe she's not that great.
This card may be broken in half in a powered cube. It reduces the cost of all mana rocks, Tezzerets, artifact removals, Trinket Mage, probably more cards than you will think on the fly.
Also? 1/3 blocks nearly everything that comes early. I'm eager to at least try it in my unpowered cube but I suspect it wouldn't be as nearly as busted in a powered cube.
My inclination is no, as I believe the number of cards that reference artifacts is probably low? But I'd want to know what that number is, or on average what it is. But even then, what would the amount of cards referencing it have to be to make it worth it?
This is the exact kind of stuff I want to see from the un-set though, things that probably wouldn't work in black border but are alright explored in this design space, and also cards that feel like magic cards while also not feeling like them in a cool way that doesn't involve rolling dice or 'gotcha!'-type mechanics.
EDIT: this ability affects a very different card pool than "artifacts". Here are the possible Cube cards I saw on page 1 of a 100 card/page Gatherer search:
Abrade
Acidic Slime
Aether Chaser
Aftershock (is this played?)
Ancient Grudge
Angel of Invention
Apostle's Blessing
Arcbound Ravager
page 2
Baral's Expertise
Blade Splicer
Bone Shredder (has the word "nonartifact", not sure)
Bosh, Iron Golem
Braids, Cabal Minion
Cataclysmic Gearhulk
Conclave Naturalists
No idea. Is keyword text part of a card's text box? I would think so, but I don't know.
I think reminder text counts as rules text in the Silver-Border world, but I'm not sure...
This believes me to think that it doesn't:
207. Text Box
207.1. The text box is printed on the lower half of the card. It usually contains rules text defining the card’s abilities.
207.2. The text box may also contain italicized text that has no game function.
207.2a Reminder text is italicized text within parentheses that summarizes a rule that applies to that card. It usually appears on the same line as the ability it’s relevant to, but it may appear on its own line if it applies to an aspect of the card other than an ability.
207.2b Flavor text is italicized text that, like the illustration, adds artistic appeal to the game. It appears below the rules text.
207.2c An ability word appears in italics at the beginning of some abilities. Ability words are similar to keywords in that they tie together cards that have similar functionality, but they have no special rules meaning and no individual entries in the Comprehensive Rules. The ability words are battalion, bloodrush, channel, chroma, cohort, constellation, converge, council’s dilemma, delirium, domain, eminence, enrage, fateful hour, ferocious, formidable, grandeur, hellbent, heroic, imprint, inspired, join forces, kinship, landfall, lieutenant, metalcraft, morbid, parley, radiance, raid, rally, revolt, spell mastery, strive, sweep, tempting offer, threshold, and will of the council.
Also, I'm pretty sure un-sets follow the same rules as regular magic until the cards themselves alter them.
This is pretty sweet, i'll probably test it out. In a world of jackal pups, a 1/3 body is MUCH better than a 1/2 body on the artificer.
Then there's a fair number of targets it helps ramp out that the artficer doesnt.
I can back this up because this is fairly common knowledge in EDH, otherwise Trinisphere would be classified as a black card and all Extort cards would be BW.
I can back this up because this is fairly common knowledge in EDH, otherwise Trinisphere would be labeled as a black card.
In addition, while it's not explicit in the rules text, you can make some pretty safe logic leaps. The fact that:
207.1. The text box is printed on the lower half of the card. It usually contains rules text defining the card’s abilities.
Is a different rule than:
207.2. The text box may also contain italicized text that has no game function.
207.2a Reminder text is italicized text within parentheses that summarizes a rule that applies to that card. It usually appears on the same line as the ability it’s relevant to, but it may appear on its own line if it applies to an aspect of the card other than an ability.
...makes it really easy to come to the conclusion that they clarify the box contains the rules and then have a separate ruling for what Reminder text is. Otherwise, the rules would include Reminder text in the section that discusses how the rules text is in the lower half of the card. i.e. Reminder text has no game function i.e. Reminder text is not rules text.
I like this card a lot, and it's exactly what I want to see coming out of Unstable. I think it's a narrow miss even for my cube, but it's interesting enough that I'm likely to try it.
I wrote a thing where I humor the idea that keywords could work with this card:
Playing rules-devil's advocate: Reminder text has no gameplay function as per 207.2. However, a keyword works as a short form of particular rules text. Thus it's not the reminder text that is referring to artifacts, rather the ability modular X has "referring to artifacts" built into the term itself.
But reading the relevant rules, I realized this is probably false.
701. Keyword Actions
701.1. Most actions described in a card’s rules text use the standard English definitions of the verbs
within, but some specialized verbs are used whose meanings may not be clear. These “keywords”
are game terms; sometimes reminder text summarizes their meanings.
In addition, ability words:
For me this hits a weird assortment of cards that don't sell me on it - 39 total, but a lot of them are things that get rid of artifacts. Also, I'm assuming that "nonartifact" doesn't count.

Does card type count as rules text? Or is rules text solely what's in the lower box?
