Sweet lord. I always thought they were going to push Chandra for this set and I am glad they did, Chandra has always tried so hard and now she gets a stone cold staple that we will be seeing in lists for years to come.
Yeah the is pretty unimpeachable. We have 3 great 4 mana red walkers now, plus sneak attack and Porphorous, and the actual creatures like Hellrider, Hero, and Flametoungue Kavu. And just today Fiery Confluence won back to back games. I have already cut Surrack and I would rather have room with the 4 drops.
It's sacrilege but I think Chandra finally bumps Koth out of 360 territory.
I was expecting her to be pushed, most Chandras have been dissed and this is her home turf.
If I do understand good, with the first ability, you have to cast the card at activation? Is that right? Because if you don't, your opponent eats 2 and the card woould be exile for good?
No, you don't have to. If you reveal a card you can't cast (a land, a card that's too expensive, a card with no targets, a counterspell, etc) OR you elect not to cast a card you could otherwise cast, the spell stays in exile and your opponents take 2 damage. If you want to cast the card, you have to do so immediately, as it's part of the ability.
Yeah, that is what I meant. By you have to, I meant if you want to, you have to. My question was more about whether or not you could cast the card, after activation, at anytime like if it was in your hand. But according to the way the damage trigger works, it is pretty clear that you can't.
I see a lot of people remarking how nice it is to finally have a great Chandra. The thing I find amusing is that we also got a great Chandra literally three set ago
I'm sure I'll be sad a once in a while when I can't use the stupid good one to accelerate out the really good one, all because of that pesky planeswalker rule.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.

Well, you can... it's just probably not a good idea.
Chandra, Flamecaller's good in the right kind of deck, but this is the Chandra we've been waiting for. It supports everything my red section wants to be doing. I'm not sure what the best cut is for this, but I'll find something, and I'm pretty sure everyone else should too no matter how stacked your red section is.

Its about time that Wizards pushed a planeswalker who isn't named Jace.
Her abilities are a bit unfocused, but are all red relevant. I do agree that she is a good replacement for Koth as THE Red walker, but for me he will always be the epitome of Mono red.
Way way worse than mind sculptor for a couple reasons, but that doesn't matter in the slightest, good card is good. Be slotting this in over sarkhan, dragonspeaker.
If we are talking about cube only, I think that it's not that clear if she's worst than JtMS or not.
They both generates CA. Jace does it better, but by putting less loyalties on the table. Brainstorming is super strong, but only if you have fetchlands or stuff to shuffle your library. They both remove creatures from the field. Jace can removes treat multiple times in a row, but only by bouncing them. In counterpart, Chandra does kill, at the cost of losing more loyalties, a lot of them permantly. Also, I think Chandra's ramp ability is more relevant than Jace pseudo scry, but Jace does it with a +2 instead of a +1. Finally, the ultimate favors Chandra.
For all those reasons, I think they're not that far away one from the other in terms of cube powerlevel. Main difference is the removal ability that favors Jace.
I'm not arguing that she's clearly better or whatever, only that, which ever is the best, it is debatable.
I am suddenly very glad that I still run the original Chandra Nalaar. Easy cut. Red now has almost as many 4-drops (counting both creatures and non-creatures) as white has in my cube.
The fact that people are comparing this to Jace, the Mind Sculptor says it all. It seems like it's in the same power ballpark, which is awesome.

Same for me. Ran Old Chandra partly because I wanted all the original walkers to be represented. This one will come in instead for me as well.
Now the question just is at what price point I'll buy it.
Her long term price is going to be dependent on if she's a hit or miss in modern, a format I really can't say much about. Definitely putting her on my "buy after Kaladesh rotates out" list, but I play a good amount of retail limited so hopefully I'll crack her at the pre-release or something, because she is no doubt the chase mythic of the set.
Being a cube staple and playable in EDH, her floor after rotation will probably be around $10 I'm guessing, and that's only assuming that she's a complete dud in Modern.
I don't think she will ever fall below $20. At least some niche modern decks will play her. I don't want to pay $40+ for her though. That is a bit much for a single newly printed card.
Maybe the planeswalker tax will catch up with her but no red cards are ever worth anything . I kid but Chandra Pyromaster was toyed with in modern and soared for a little while but now can be had for $2.
There is only one red mythic in the history of magic that I can't currently buy for less than $20, and it is this one. It sure is cool but I think I can wait until it hits $10.
Sick. Hard to compare across colors, but red Mind Sculptor does seem like an apt comparison regarding CMC, flexibility, and maybe even power level.
Also, she somehow follows the design of Fiery Confluence and Collective Defiance, flexible burn (=reach and removal) that does more than just burn. I like that direction for red very much.
