I'm not saying he's the best white five drop ever, but he's piqued my interest enough to test him in the enviroment, and I think angel of invention is massively overrated.
Cataclysm on a stick is a much better effect in retail limited than cube, IMO. In retail limited, each player has only so many bombs / removal spells. Most of your opponent's creatures aren't going to go toe to toe with Cataclysmic Gearhulk in regular limited [...]
I've just played the white Gearhulk in Kaladesh prerelease this weekend and, no joke, it was garbage material. One of the most trap card I've ever played. It was not as good as expected, and by a huge marge. He was basicly a 4/5 vigilance with drawback... Somethimes killing you own stuff, or at the opposite, preventing you from developing your board state. Been an artifact was seriously a problem as well. Almost every time I've casted it, it let live the two biggest creatures my opponent had, because one of them was an artifact. Just can't imagine myself running this in cube...
Garbage material sounds a bit harsh. I saw it in action all weekend and thought it was pretty good, but not as good as the other Gearhulks (disclosure: I pulled 3 of them at the midnight release tournament and combo'd the blue / red ones with Saheeli's Artistry all night). Cataclysm effects can be VERY awkward, but I would probably snap P1P1 him all day in retail limited still.
LIke I said, not being harsh at all, as a mythic rare, it was garbage. A Bastion Mastodon with drawback all day long, even if I was running a creature light deck... In Kaladesh limited at least, this card is not a bomb.
At the prerlease, CG was strong. Not super bomby, but a good and impactful rare. Calling him Bastion Mastodon with a drawback is just silly. If you plan one or two turns ahead, it is all upside. Entice your opponent to go wide, then punish them without losing much (if anything valuable) yourself. Seriously, is Day of Judgment just Murder with a drawback!?
And note that it is less likely that your opponent will have big normal and artifact creatures in cube than it is in Kaladesh limited.
I think planeswalkers really mess with Cataclysm effects. This card is pretty good against aggro but awful vs control. Too many scenarios where your opponent keeps their best creature and a planeswalker that can pop out 1/1s to block Gearhulk all day.
I've played Tragic Arrogance enough in both draft and EDH to know that many times your opponent will just have one of everything already or it only hits one permanent. At least I get to choose with Tragic Arrogance and can get rid of their biggest problem if possible. Not only that but you have to play to your board too. Gearhulk is too much work with not enough payoff for me.
Don't call people silly because you think what they say is untrue. This is simply unrespectful. Not the place for that. And yeah, there isn't that much difference between Bastion Mastodon and Cataclysmic Gearhulk when it's not in your opening. You can't be that much behind, without being already dead, to just be save by topdecking it either... If your opponent has 3 creatures on board, he'd still be able to keep two of them most of the time.
If your opponent has 3 creatures on board, he'd still be able to keep two of them most of the time.
Maybe in KLD limited. But in cube, there's no way that 33% of your threats have a non-creature card type on them to punish the caster of the Gearhulk. It's pretty rare that they'll keep more than one in this format.
The problem is that it does nothing against diverse boards. When your opponent is killing you with a good creature and a good planeswalker, the Gearhulk does nothing for you. Same as if they have a good creature and a good artifact out. It only really punishes linear play, never eliminates their best cards, and usually can't beat good, diverse boards. That's the reason I think it's a pass. Not because they'll keep 2 creature sometimes.
I don't see much in the White Gearhulk personally, but AoI is definitely being overrated. Its a nice card but..Cube powerhouse? That seems ridiculous to me.

You're absolutely right. I was meanly referring to KLD. It's simply that its overall performance this weekend was so bad that I'm kind of mad at the card. I don't see it been very good in cube, but for other reasons, like the ones you've mentionned. It's just seems to be also bad against the creature match up, in which it's suppose to shine.
Calling gearhulk bad in limited might be true in your experience but my undefeated sealed deck loved him and had the whole game plan of flickering him as much as possible. Definitely an Allstar in limited, the planeswalkers clause was a lot more hindrance than I thought it was in cube though, without that clause it would be so much better.
Concerning the connection between limited and cube, I'm surprised we didn't get more pushed menace creatures, as menace in this format is the weakest it'll probably ever be.

Yeah, it was that bad...
This is why it's important to connect both theory and practise, and not judge a card entirely based on a limited sample of experiences.
If you are running gearhulk in a token deck for example, you are going to be disappointed heh.
Was in a WB Control shell with absolutely no token generator. I had like 3 Fabricate card in my whole pool FWIW. I just had a decent amount of creatures. Just enough to survive on a sealed-limited field.
What happpens with the targets of enchantment from spells like banishing light, stasis snare etc when the Cataclysmic gearhulks effect resolves?
Say I have one creature and two banishing lights on the battlefield, and the opponetns have just one creature.
I suppose I have to choose one of the banishing lights as my enchantment. But what happens to the creature my banishing light put in exile?
The opponent choose his creature after I have choosed the one I will spare, and then it resolves and the banishing lights is gone, does the creature the banishing light have enchanted come back after the Cataclysmic effect have resolved?
Is it then possible to use enchantments like banishing light for saving own creature? Like say I have twoo big creatures, so I cast banishing light on one of them in my opponent end phase, and then in my phase I cast Cataclysmic Gearhulk,
and if I have one other enchantment, I can just sacriface the banishing light and the creature will come back into play?
Not sure on how you're planning on casting Banishing Light on your opponent's end phase, but anyway, all of the unchosen permanents are sacrificed at the same time, so the creature that the Banishing Light is exiling would return to the battlefield safely.
Ok, I mixed up banishing light with stasis snare. But I guess that plan is a little too complicated with removing my own creatures with enchantments. First I need to have one additional creature I want to save, then I need one enchantment more so Im sure that I get the opportunity to sacriface the enchantment etc.
