When Cataclysmic Gearhulk enters the battlefield, each player chooses from among the non-land permanents he or she controls an artifact, a creature, an enchantment, and a planeswalker, then sacrifices the rest.
4/5
I know white 5s are pretty stacked these days, but pseudo-Cataclysm on an on-curve body looks like it gets there to me. Something to keep in mind since this is an artifact creature, you can keep this and another creature or artifact.
Both this and its green counterpart have been pretty pushed, I can't wait to see the rest of this cycle.
I'm not feeling this card, the body isn't that impressive for a 5-drop and unlike Tragic Arrogance, your opponent gets to choose what they keep. Has to compete with Baneslayer Angel, which has somehow become the bottom ranked 5-drop (never thought I'd say that). Gearhulk's ETB isn't even that abusable and requires you to play a specific deck and is very matchup / situationally dependent.
The cool thing about this card is that it comes packaged with a way to break the symmetry in that you can choose this as your artifact and still keep a creature. I think there are lots of decks arhat would want to play this card. Think I'll test.
This is a powerful effect, but allowing the opponent to choose will often lead to situations where you go from losing to their best cards to ...still losing to their best cards.
If white's 5-drops weren't so stacked, this would be a solid test, but against that competition, this doesn't excite me.
I like it but don't love it, but white has the toughest 5 drop slot. The oponent choosing keeps me from testing this and most of my white decks have more of each permanent on board than their opponents. I hope the red is a hastey mini Inferno titan.
I'm playing World Queller right now, and this will replace that about 10 seconds after the set release.
Is this a cycle of playable-at-worst 5 drops, ala the Titans? Boy, I hope so. And hopefully the black one is as nutty as Grave Titan is in that cycle.

Not my cup of tea, and it was already agony fitting in new avacyn, which i think is stronger than this card. Don't think its stronger than, baneslayer, Avacyn, or Kithkin in a can.
So this is what we have so far...
White: Cataclysm sans land destruction (which probably means we won't get a Wildfire Gearhulk)
Green: +1/+1 counters
Possibilities....
Black
- -1/-1 counters that you can hopefully spread out like the green hulk?
- Raise Dead / Zombify
- (Random) discard
- deals damage / life gain combo
Red
- Maybe direct damage since Skyconsul already nukes creatures / planeswalkers
- Zealous Conscripts
- Pyroclasm / Anger of the Gods
Blue
- Card draw / loot
- Bounce
- Tap / can't untap shenanigans
- Gives your creatures flying
It's certainly easy to underestimate this effect, but I think it'll be harder to break the symmetry than desired.
Probably very good against artifact based decks (ravage their mana base).
It's also good against swarm decks, but I find those decks are underperforming.. I don't really want more built in answers against them...
The best "mode" of cataclysm is hitting lands.
The most important clause of tragic arrogance, is choosing what your opponent keeps.
I'm not going to test, but I'll keep my eye on it, and interested in feedback from those who do.
I would have preferred it if it didn't let players keep their planeswalkers, like the original Cataclysm does. That is one of the main upsides of that card.
Despite that, this Gearhulk is pretty strong. Too bad that I have four 5-drops that are stronger. Hm, I might bench Cloudgoat Ranger for a while though, just to give this a test run. That is the only of white 5-drop that I could see this replacing.

Black one just mirroring green one would be sick. Megaskinrender is a card I'd be happy cubing :D.

There won't be any -1/-1 counters in this block. It has +1/+1 counters in it. Wizards won't drop this design rule just when they noticed that the last few blocks have been too complex and when they decided to tone the complexity down a bit.
It's not yet certain that the cycle will all be costed at 5 mana, but if that's the case, then I am hoping for a good black one.
This card is really decent but White 5 drops are a tough place to crack into.
After seeing the first two, I suspect them all to be 5-drops. It would be the third mythic fatty cycle after Titans (too strong) and Souls (too weak). It looks like they might hit the right spot this time.
It is interesting to note that the green one and the white one have slightly different body sizes.
Anyone have test results with this card yet? I really really want to like it but it does seem like the decks that would otherwise benefit from it's ETB the most (control, wildfire, artifacts) are the most hurt.
This guy played really well in my prerelease, unlike other gearhulks the artifact bonus is a significant boon, as you can keep him as your artifact or your creature. I think he is better than the other white five drop in this set,and his largest downside, the planeswalkers clause existing won't be too much of a hindrance.

You think he's better than Angel of Invention? The W Gearhulk is OK, but I can't agree with that. Angel seems like it should be a staple to me.
Cataclysm on a stick is a much better effect in retail limited than cube, IMO. In retail limited, each player has only so many bombs / removal spells. Most of your opponent's creatures aren't going to go toe to toe with Cataclysmic Gearhulk in regular limited, but the effect is too symmetrical for cube, IMO where your opponent can easily blow up Gearhulk or have a creature to match it. I'm not a fan of Cataclysm / Tragic Arrogance effects in cube for this very reason, both which I like better than Cataclysmic Gearhulk since Cataclysm nukes lands and all the choices are in your hands for Tragic Arrogance.
I think this and the red Gearhulk are the two worst ones for cube.
White Gearhulk is passable, but nowhere close to Angel of Invention in overall powerlevel, the importance in the cube, or the synergy they have with existing cards. I can't imagine that card making the cut outside of a ginormous cube. The white 5cc creature section was stacked with better options already, and the top shelf got deeper with this set.
The effect isn't nearly as good as Tragic Arrogance, and certainly not close to actual Cataclysm. That's why it can safely have a great body strapped to the effect and still be merely okay.
