Good points about hydra. How do we all feel about acidic slime these days?
Probably better than ever. As the quality of midrange creatures increases, the deathtouch s becoming more and more useful. And with the recent influx of additional manlands, the LD function has increased in importance. Definitely not a cut I'd be looking to make.
I like this, and might try and find room for it somehow, but not over Kalonian Hydra. Losing a full turn off your clock, dying to artifact removal and being unable to be targeted by 'Lark and (both) Recruiters are all significant drawbacks. It has its advantages too, but not enough for me to do a straight replacement. I might try and find another way to get this in though...
Technically with another creature on board it has the same clock speed as the hydra.
4->12->20
0->8->24
Gross oversimplification tho
A lot of the times Gearhulk's clock will be 0-8-8-8 etc

Ya, but the extra 4 damage matters a lot w/ trample in terms of clock, and the Hydra does it in two turns all by itself.

I'm predicting it will be correct to make it an 8/8 less than 20%. You are likely gonna play it in a creature heavy deck and it's pretty rare not to have another creature on the battlefield in decks that can support GG. Hasted clock is super relevant, as is spreading out your power/toughness to removal.
A common line I suspect will be taken is +1/+1 on the gearhulk and +3/+3 on whatever creatures you have lying around (given the nature of removal in cube)... but a lot of variation will exist. Strategic options = ++
Way too many variations to account for, but there's going to be a lot of times where the creature you're pumping won't be super relevant, like a 1/1 mana dork that also won't have trample or some sort other form of evasion. Combinin high power and trample is key to breaking a lot of board states, I think the most common way to divide his counters (assuming he's got something to work with) will probably be 2 and 2 or 3 and 1
I really don't want to cut the hydra, all I really want is a cube hydra.. but I think this is better. I might sadly cut hydra, or just ignore this cards existence.
Green fives are super tight... I get the draw of kalonian hydra and it's been good for us but I think this creature is more versatile and may be better with extended testing. Even at 540 I don't know how I can squeeze this in without losing hydra. Maybe I cut a four drop... Like master of the hunt. Gah.
Because I think it is an amazing green creature, it had to be a 5 drop... Oh well and being there are only a couple green artifact creatures ever and this one has an insane power level of course it is a mythic. Only way it could be more if it was legendary and named.
It's a card that I will Tinker, GSZ, Natural Order, reanimate, or Eldritch Evolution for. It also plays into +1/+1 counter synergy and blink decks. Seems hot in fires decks, formidable cards, pump spells and equipment.
I will be shocked it this doesn't make it. I isn't a centerpiece but it goes in so many decks and helps make them hum. I'm loving it.
Looking at the card, it doesn't seem like it is stellar at any one job, but it is serviceable in many, many, roles. Lets see here...
Reanimator, Tinker, Natural Order, Show and Tell, Sneak Attack, Wildfire, Midrange stall-breaker, Aggro finisher, Blink, Recurring Nightmare, tokens, and any sort of +1/+1 shenanigans.
Being able to use one counter on itself and 3 counters on another creature to get it out of Wildfire range is important on both sides of the table. Synergy with tons of creatures, even favorites like Birds of Paradise. You can snipe planeswalkers with a 8 power trampler, or buffing an evasive guy. If you fear removal you can use the counters on other creatures, to sustain your value.
Also, another artifact creature to help enable delirium.
Also, closes the game out very quickly.
Also, I think there are enough cards to support a +1/+1 counter theme.
And from the Kaladesh Consulate Facebook page they included a lot of story flavor including " We challenged five teams of expert designers to build automatons of an extreme scale, with the added stipulation of incorporating a single element of the Aether Cycle into their design" , so expect 5 colored artifact badasses like this one.
THAT is something to get excited about. Tinkertitans
This gearhulk cycle literally excited me! Woe to our wallets!
If this turns out to be a cycle, we might finally get the great black 5cc.
Verdurous Gearhulk is so versatile by itself (anthem, overrun, or pump spell) plus it combos with almost all cheaty ways from NO, GSZ, Tinker and Animate. I am skipping Kalonian Hydra for this.
Saw this today in testing in a blue green midrange deck. It was a house. I am a fan of the hydra and, thankfully for now, was able to cut thornling to make room for the green gearhulk. That said, if I run into a spot down the road where I need to make space for another green five drop I'll probably cut kalonian hydra before gearhulk. I get that they play well together but, come on, how many times is that interaction going to happen in real life. Gearhulk is just so freaking flexible. i saw it come down as an 8/8 a couple times but usually it was a 5/5 or 6/6 that mad an evasive creature more scary.
I lost one game where I was locked in a ground stall, my opponent had monarch online with a regal behemoth, and managed to cast this, bounce it with man o war, cast it again, and then hit me for lethal with a 13/13 trampling behemoth. Fun times.

When people ask why I think cube is the best format, it's stuff like this that I tell them.

Green Gearhulk has been medium in testing. In the games that it has won, it was jut imitating Kalonian Hydra. In the games it has lost, Hydra may have won for me in those situations. Being an artifact is a legit drawback for a green midrange card; probably the deck with the lowest count of artifacts out there. Meaning my opponent seems to always have a sandbagged Disenchant effect at the ready to kill it. It may not make it into my cube permanently.
FWIW the Kaladesh Inventions have been spoiled and unsurprisingly all five Gearhulks are on the list. Better yet, there are a BUNCH of great cube cards also included. Glad I'm not trying to pimp my cube out because the mere fact that some of these cards exist would drive me crazy with jealousy.
How have people liked this card compared to Wolfir Silverheart? I've been meaning to test Gearhulk over the Wolf-Dad, but haven't gotten a chance to. Being an artifact strikes me as a real drawback, and I don't support the artifact deck so there seems little benefit besides Tinker.

My Cubes - The Busted Cube. A fully functional, almost 100% custom cube. The project started out by asking "What if other colors got cards on the power level of Mana Drain,Ancestral Recall, and Time Walk?" Draft and enjoy!
