Is this too cute? I know that it's 5 mana, but you can most likely double your instant and sorcery for the rest of the game. That sounds pretty powerful, but I don't know if it's too restrictive or not.
I like where this card is going. And if it were tweked in some way. Maybe if it cost three but required spell mastery to get the fork, but alas this is not cheap enough to do anything I care about. Fork effects generally need to cost the same or less than the spells they are coping.
It's cool that you can do the Gilded Lotus trick of playing the artifact and then using its mana supply to do something. However, that thing has to cost exactly R. Depending on the number of R one mana spells you run, this could be passable, since it will break subsequent effects wide open. I would say you can't afford to play this and NOT use it in the same turn, however. We probably don't have enough to make it worthwhile but I actually think the card is alright.
But who is running Cruel Ultimatum in cube? I wanted to stay realistic.
All jokes aside, I've run Cruel Ultimatum in the past and it's very much on my radar for a future re-inclusion. Sure, it's nearly uncastable, but the power level is high and me and my drafters found the "puzzle" of trying to cast it a fun one. I'm not saying it's something we should all necessarily be doing, but spending 1/2 slots in (hard-to-play but fan and powerful) cards like the Ultimatum or Door to Nothingness gives an extra dimension to a draft - 'yes, this is the day I'm casting Cruel Ultimatum!'.
As for the Goggles. I dismissed this card initially but this thread made me realize it's much closer in playability than what I initially thought. Unfortunately, it needed to generate 3 mana (maybe 2) or costing 3 to make it worthwhile, though.
I do the same, bright side. It's clearly not a great choice if all you're considering is competitive play/maximizing the power level of your cube, but it's such a fun card that when you can pull it together not only is it badass, but it feels like you've accomplished something awesome. I'm OK with including those types of cards as a small percentage of my cube, as I don't really feel it detracts from the power level of a cube if there are only 1 or 2 you are "embarrassed" to run if you only look at it from a power-level-maximizing standpoint.

I really like the idea of spell mastery on a 3 mana rock here. Could have become the poster boy for the mechanic
I was able to catch a tiny bit of the SCG Standard coverage today and saw a feature match with a deck including four of these and it looked incredibly fun (and powerful!). I don't think this card cracks it into smaller cubes, but it could certainly merit some testing in larger ones. While the standard deck was abusing it with cards like Tormenting Voice and Magmatic Insight (as well as various red burn spells and sweepers), but including this artifact really gets me excited about a card like Firestorm (which sometimes I'm very lukewarm on in cube).
