IMO the creature clause is just a really, really nice bonus. Otherwise, a majority of its weight is carried by its normal planeswalker abilities. I think this would a be slam dunk regardless of its static ability just due to the fact that it's so close to RB Daretti anyways. +1 to make a 1/1 with no restrictions is unprecedented on a 3-cmc planeswalker: Daretti's tokens can't attack and Nissa makes 0/1s.
This. It's ridiculous how good Grist is even without taking advantage of his most abusive line of text. I was briefly considering reconfiguring my Golgari section to include a sacrifice theme, but then I realized this card is just good in any deck. Good grief.
Cool card. What happens when you cast Animate Dead on it? Since it stops being a creature?
I think the following Oracle ruling covers that question. In this case, protection from black is analogous to not being a creature while on the battlefield.
If the creature put onto the battlefield has protection from black—or if the creature can’t legally be enchanted by Animate Dead for another reason—Animate Dead won’t be able to attach to it. It will be put into the graveyard as a state-based action, causing its delayed triggered ability to trigger. When the trigger resolves, if the creature’s still on the battlefield, its controller will sacrifice it.

So, Grist will enter the battlefield and then be sacrificed before you have a chance to activate it.
It's kinda funny because the PW abilities are decent, like kinda mediocre even, but the Creature clause just has so much versatility (like you folks have already noted). I really look forward to playing with this card.

My favourite thing about the creature clause is it makes the card interesting and unique.
His ability set is +x make tokens, -x destroy stuff that we've seen so much of. Obviously there's some nuance to those abilities , but it's nothing out of the ordinary for a planeswalker.
I'd be shocked if he wasn't the #1 golgari card even if he didn't have that clause
Filling graveyards often requires whole cards to do, and this one does it passively while offering other useful planeswalkery things (make a token). That should help Golgari a lot. I'll find room for bugboy here!
After how good wrenn and six and how boring most standard walkers are, I was really hoping for a slam dunk planeswalker for cube this set. The black blade dissapointed, but I love every single thing about this card. I expect this to be the card I set my expectations for modern horizons three from.
It’s interesting mechanically, flavorfully it’s amazing, his first ability has a bunch of abuse cases, his second ability is token generation, with UPSIDE, his other abilities are good. Man, I think I’m falling in love with modern horizons...
Daretti is very good, and so is this. That the tokens can attack is a great bonus - will definitely find a slot. I don't think the out-of-play ability is massively relevant.
We tried Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast and didn't like it, but hitting PWs is definitely better than hitting artifacts, not to mention these tokens are better. The creature synergies with this card are cool too, and this being in green makes it better as red's respective 3 drops are better, and being accelerated out on turn 2 with a dork is big game.
Being able to kill Oko is also awesome, so we're happy to try this over Vraska, Golgari Queen
This also makes my cube 1 step closer to a pseudocycle of walkers is each guild... selesnya really needs some help though. Its easily the worst color combination.
Cutting a removal spell from golgari is going to be really tough though!
