Been playing it for two days in Standard, and Showdown of the Skalds feels busted. Like potentially the best card in standard, but certainly the best card in the aggro deck I'm playing. Turns out four cards is a *lot* and an average of three +1/+1 counters goes a hell of a long way toward closing out the game. Most people would play a 2RW 3/3 that draws two cards on etb. 2RW for a 3/3 that draws four cards is absurd. This card often plays like that.
If you're looking for a new Boros card that packs a punch outside of Winota, I sincerely recommend testing it.

Totally forgot about the existence of this card when I posted. Yes, def worth a test.
I don't think Showdown is bad but 4CC aggro curve toppers are not hard to come by. I'm not sure I'd want to use a multicolor slot for a card whose role is already saturated. I'll put it on my watch list though.
For what it's worth, I do think Showdown fits in a lot more decks than your average aggro topper though! Currently a lot of Yorion lists are running Showdown because blinking it even once is disgusting. Shepherd of the Flock is actually even better with it, cuz it's two spells.
Two other lesser considered cards that have stood out to me so far:
Esika's Chariot. Card runs a value train on them. Frequently worth 12 power for four mana. Everybody likes to talk about how the opponent can cast a removal spell on the token you're targeting to "blow you out" but they forget that you still have a 4/4 body, another 2/2 cat, and anything else you did that turn with all of your untapped lands. I have often had my opponent spend two removal spells on the tokens Chariot creates, later wrath the board, and still have Chariot be relevant in the game. Also plays extremely well with Starnheim Unleashed in your opening hand. I think this card will give life to Selesnya token strategies while also being a very good card in it's own right. It is, still, a fair card and probably doesnt fit cutthroat powered lists.
Clarion Spirit. Pretty impressed with this in limited. Turn three this and a one drop or bolt make it a 2mana Pia Nalaar right off the bat. Two activations and you've got Whirler Rogue stats. The flying has mattered quite a bit. I like that this works equally well in a low to the ground aggro weenie deck and a Jeskai prowess tempo deck since it doesnt care about what type of spells you are casting. Bonus points for working so well with Showdown of the Skalds. Not certain how long it'll last, but it fills a void in my white section atm and I am currently optimistic.
I'm actively maintaining a comprehensive article to help explain to new cube players how some complex vintage level cards work in a cube environment. Vintage Cube Cards Explained
Got in the first test on Xmage last night and got some reps with a lot of cards.
Usher of the Fallen, Clarion Spirit, and Dragonkin Berserker were played in a Boros Aggro list. Usher was great as expected and clarion spirit ate removal everytime it hit the board which is fine for a 2cmc creature and at least speaks to the perceived threat level of the card. Dragonkin threatened to make a dragon forcing the opponent to remove it or die so again I think if your 2cmc spells are forcing your opponent to use up valuable removal they are doing a fine job.
Doomskar, glorious protector, and cosima, god of the voyage were played in an Esper control list. Nothing much to report on doomskar unfortunately, glorious protector was mostly played as a non blinking restoration angel, but cosima was surprisingly good. Vehicle wasn't played at all but the front side blocked then drew two cards, then exiled while the controller played a board wipe and came back later drawing 3 cards. So pretty good in this shell. Still feels slow but has potential and people who run double fetches might want to consider it more strongly.
Battle Mammoth, Esika's Chariot, and Masked Vandal were played in a Mono Green deck. Battle mammoth was a big dummy as expected but in the situations where Elder Gargaroth would have just died the insurance of battle mammoth felt good. Chariot is very strong. It was very difficult for opponents to decide to kill the chariot or to kill the crewing creatures and just snowballed so hard. Surprise of the night, Masked Vandal was very strong. It hit the board as a 2 mana Rec sage three times not being hindered by lack of creatures in the graveyard at all. Took out a retrofitter foundry and two coalition relics. Was tutored for with Green Sun's Zenith twice costing only 3 mana to tutor it directly into play where compared to reclamation sage would be 4 mana. So far very happy with this over spell based disenchants like Wilt especially being able to tutor for it in green with things like greensun, Fiend artisan, etc.
Behold the Multiverse was in a Dimir control list and played pretty much as expected. It was cast for foretell about equal amounts as fully paid and gave a nice flexible option to hold up mana for counterspells.
Starnheim unleashed unfortunately didn't get cast as far as I know. Firja's Retribution rotted in the sideboard of the Esper Control deck, being too demanding of a casting cost for the mostly blue aligned deck. I feel it is the weakest of the cards i'm testing so not too surprised by this. Shimmerdrift Vale Was serviceable as a fixer if you are looking to cut back on functional reprints of evolving wilds and terramorphic expanse which are both better than this. Some people are diehard on singleton and this helps with the spirit of that if you are against functional reprints. Also if your cube plays some crazy land configuartion where decks consistently end up with only 1 or 2 basics shimmerdrift can fit into these decks without ending up as a dead card with nothing to fetch so that's one advantage to consider.
Hope you are all getting in some good testing and enjoying the set!
Thanks for sharing!
Cosima was pretty good for us too, the game I saw I think it came down a turn early and drew 3 cards when it came back? Share the concerns about it being kinda slow and clunky.
Battle Mammoth was very solid in the GW midrange deck I saw it in - drawing a card off an opponent's Primus trigger.
I really want Vorinclex to get there, it hasn't happened much yet (one player did get to immediately ultimate a Nissa WStW which was fun, but otherwise it just ate removal where both Primeval Titan and Carnage Tyrant would have been better. Going to keep hoping though cause it's a wacky card.
I'm still very skeptical of the reliability of Masked Vandal, but if it ends up being good, would love to play it!
Got in another draft last night. Doomskar solid. Usher of the Fallen was in a 3-0 selesnya deck. Firja's Retribution last pick in the pack. Think I am done testing it.
The changeling effect of masked vandal came up twice in funny situations that weren't expected. One time saving its controller from being killed by a flipped Thing in the Ice while it counted as a horror. The other time backfired and stopped its controller from creating snakes with their Ophiomancer! lol

Stuff like this is why I can't cut Mirror Entity. I love little interactions like that.

Cool to hear Chariot has been strong - I might have undervalued it in its SCD. I think I'll give it a whirl.
It's my personal favorite green 4. I think it's probably behind Questing Beast and Thrun on power alone, but only by a little. It is a downright good card.
I really appreciate these firsthand recounts of testing! These are my includes I'll be testing tomorrow during a bday cube session, and will report back:
-Starnheim Unleashed
-Glorious Protector
-Doomskar
-Usher of the Fallen
-Esika's Chariot

Esika's Chariot seems like a good card, but no good shells currently.
I'm going to have a second look at at ForeTell, but as a Legacy player, I'm generally skeptical of cards with 3CMC > Higher in ramp/ combo decks. ForeTell allowing a turn 2-turn 3 curve might be interesting.

As others have noted, I added [Starnheim Unleashed] and [Doomskar] as a 2-card package because they present opposite survival tactics for the opponent, so guessing your foretold card incorrectly can cause a game-losing disadvantage for them. But Glorious Protector joins in because, as unlikely as it could be, they actually create a Rock-Paper-Scissors foretell game.
Starnheim beats Glorious Protector. 4/4 > 3/4
Glorious Protector beats Doomskar, a wrath.
Doomskar beats Starnheim Unleashed, no matter the x.
On the real tip, Glorious Protector is another (slow) Resto for the flash/flying deck, that also occasionally plays as a 3 mana 3/4 flyer with flash that counters a removal spell, in a weird way. Rebuying ETBs is slow, but if it ain't dying, you're probably getting in damage every turn.
Doomskar and Starnheim are the truly playable options, and should go in together imo, but GloPro's art is unstoppable, and it's nearly a pet card for me.
Esika's Chariot - definitely sticking around for many more tests. Not until playing in paper did I consider the line of turn 4 chariot, turn 5 creature OR token-producing planeswalker, crew chariot with 0-1 cats, swing for 6-8, and leave a 2/2 defending the walker. That's pretty much BCS, but the ACS was good each game. It often traded away after making 1 new cat, and that's also a good deal. Both the cats & the car won't often be destroyed simultaneously in my cube, and it's fun to play with. I love vehicles. and this one's green!

That is a pretty good point you are making! Why though do good new cards have to be CMC 4 in white so often That is the most contested spot in my Cube.
That is a pretty good point you are making! Why though do good new cards have to be CMC 4 in white so often That is the most contested spot in my Cube.
That is THE biggest problem I have with Kaldheim & other recent sets.
Starnheim Unleashed, Halvar God of Battle, Court of Grace, Glorious Protector, Doomskar, Luminous Broodmoth, UGHHH
Starnheim Courser:
Outstanding performance. This is an all around good card that helps strategies all over the board.
Cyclone Summoner:
I've still never seen this used. I still like it as a finisher, but I could see cutting it.
Bind the Monster:
This card hurts a lot, but it's worth it, and I'm not cutting it any time soon.
Egon, God of Death // Throne of Death:
This is clearly pretty niche, but I've been liking it a lot. It's mostly just a lot of fun, but it's seldom dead. Frankly I think the front side is overplayed, and people overlook the backside too often.
Birgi, God of Storytelling//Harnfell, Horn of Plenty:
I really underestimated the back half of this. Birgi's not much of a topdeck, but if you have something to discard, Harnfell can really put you back in the game. Birgi herself is fun too. She's particularly fun with Underworld Breach. But without the back half, she'd be pretty one-dimensional.
Masked Vandal:
This is pretty good. It's exactly okay. Exile is relevant, and the body's not bad. It does really suck to have a target and no graveyard though. I wanna play more changelings in general, so I'll keep it.
I'm still interested in Valki, Tergrid, Toski, Esika, Realmwalker, and maybe Orvar, or The World Tree. But I don't have any of those cards. Most of the others, I ended up not being interested in, or quickly cutting. I ended up not including any foretell. Esika's Chariot is an excellent card, but I'm currently not playing mine in my cube because I have a deck that needs it.
I'd be interested to hear results from others on threads like this from past sets.

For me, the big standouts were Usher of the Fallen and Esika's Chariot, those are the only two I'm still currently playing besides the Pathways. Usher of the Fallen is one of the better Savannah Lion variants and Esika's Chariot was probably the sleeper of 2021.
Pathway lands are obviously good, although I do like pain lands more. I think they're pretty even / slightly better than fast lands.
Doomskar / Starnheim Unleashed were pretty good. Despite their AWESOME CARD NAMES, they're just lower on the totem pole for me in their respective roles. With me going back to experiment with 540, I'm tempted to bring them back in, but there's also some other things I want to mess with.
Halvar, God of Battle was okay, but passable given the insane competition at the white 4-cmc slot. Would definitely include in a more fair cube trying to push an equipment theme though.
I liked Starnheim Unleashed and Doomskar. Space is at a real premium but I'd consider reincluding these as a pair if I expanded the cube size.
Halvar, God of Battle is fun. With the addition of the equipment creatures like Lion Sash and Blade of the Oni (plus Eater of Virtue) in Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, this guy also gains some credit and I've toyed with bringing him back. His equipment side is very decent and generally the main draw of the card. Yet another 4 drop though (at least one side is)
Valki, God of Lies overperformed and I would consider bringing him back. Tibalt side is incredibly strong. The major issue is that both faces kind of want a different deck.
Esika's Chariot was a disappointment even in the barren green 4 slot.
If you're looking for a new Boros card that packs a punch outside of Winota, I sincerely recommend testing it.
Totally forgot about the existence of this card when I posted. Yes, def worth a test.
