I'm not fully on board with this card myself but I'm going to give this a try in the coming weeks. Obviously this card is no Mana Drain, but if Ancestral Recall or Time Walk costed Blue - Green - Green or Blue- Colorless - Green Green, it would still be very strong in any powered environment.
I think this card is pretty comparable to mystic snake with its mana cost. I been considering this card as my cube as I would like +1 counter magic and +1 card in storm support. Especially with the Talisman cycle and the Signets fully in cube, I think its pretty consistent to get 4 mana on turn 3.

My inclination is 4 is already too high for counter magic, 5 might be way too much.
I'm kinda evaluating this card in a vacuum assuming the color requirement isn't the issue but mostly around the mana cost and opportunity.

This card was pretty great in my multiplayer cube back when it was slower. If your environment is like a classic powered/unpowered cube like others in this forum it's too slow.
What makes Mystic Snake good is that the deck that plays him are mostly tempo decks where you disrupt your opponents with small creatures and chip in for damage. The disruption and damage adds up and you win. Plus being a creature means you can abuse it pretty easily.

Unfortunately I might have to agree with you. I will give him a try just to round out my number of counter spells + storm support, but yah I prob won't have high hopes for the card. I will test it out in a vacuum though, just wanted to see what other people's play experience has been

I've tested this slightly, unfortunately, it didn't live up well to expectations. Maybe if it was 2 Colorless, 1 Blue, 1 Green and could be cast off a cost reducer/ fast mana.

It's feasible in slower cubes, but look at this card more as a mana ramp spell, that happens to have a counterspell. In my cube, Simic decks already have a lot of ramp, and this serves really as a "mana storage" and leaving your opponent behind, to go off with a big fatty, such as Simic sky swallower , or even scarier a Craterhoof Behemoth to get that triple green with ease.
Mana drain is an excellent card. If you are using it for ramp, its mana is colorless however
Maybe if it was 2 Blue and 2 colorless, I could see this having a slot. But the more I think about it, the 2 blue, 2 green is too restrictive.

I agree with BlackWaltz3, GUU would've been super sweet.
That would be very good - The only three mana counter spell I have in my cube are Force of Negation and Spell Queller, which really aren't the three mana unconditional counters.
I have prioritized two mana Rune Snag over three mana counter spells myself.
There's also Scattering Stroke but that one's kinda meh. There's just too many crazy good Simic cards to warrant Plasm Capture I think.
I might be adding this card to my cube if it unconditionally added the extra mana, but clash seems really silly.

Maybe it would only give you all mana of one color or only a combination of U or G mana to make up for being 3CC.
