Trivia, Useless Ramblings, and Facts (TURF)
The Chaos Color - Despite only having 20 voters, 74 different cards were voted on in Red (In 2016 there were 28 voters and only 68 cards received votes). Only the top 12 cards had widespread support and afterwords there is a precipitous drop both in numbers of people who voted for a particular card and how highly they rated it.
Thanks for bearing with me. I had a busy weekend so this came out a bit later than usual. The Green voting thread will be up tomorrow morning. Friendly reminder that partial lists will not be counted. Let's try to get more green voters than in 2016...er the color that is, not the party.
Red can do a lot of fun, interesting and powerful things in the cube, but it very often gets used for just red aggro. Sad. I realized I made a couple mistakes with my red top 20 list this time around too. Next time my list will be better.
I was surprised Splinter Twin wasn't on more lists. I find that Twin is one of the best performing archetypes in nearly all cubes that support it, powered and unpowered.
When I added Red Sun's Zenith, it was just because fireballs are good, but through testing, I've learned its greatest power above the other Blazes is as a control finisher. If the game goes long, it's not uncommon to cast this three times, especially since blue decks can always find it. Two fireballs to the face are usually lethal. It's late game, you have a thin deck, they have a low life total, and you Zenithed a creature earlier. You topdeck Zenith and win. I've seen that scenario at least a dozen times.
But I will note that my cube is slower than most, which makes fireballs more effective.
This list seems like a bunch of stuff is way out of place, I'm guessing its because not everybody runs Wheel because of its high price and Confluence is from an older commander set so not everyone has one, but I can't explain how Wildfire, Young Pyromancer, and Inferno Titan ended up so low. Really is bizarre. Regardless, thanks for the list Waltz! You're doing the whole forum a favor compiling all this data, truly a blessing.
I would say anything in the top 12 is a widely agreed upon cube staple so even if the rankings appear out of order to you most people valued the cards you mentioned. Confluence also jumped a ton from 2016. I appreciate the thanks! It's very time consuming, but I was curious about where people were at too so I took it on myself. I already learned that I should probably incorporate Shelldock Isle, very excited to see what we get from the guild sections.
