This card indicates to me there's a good chance they are catering to cubes...
It's too expensive/fair for eternal play and possibly commander play?
Going to be absurd in it's native limited format.
Only reason I could see them printing it is for the memes and for cube.
Is it overkill to run both? I usually want this card instead of Deranged unless i'm playing Recurring Nightmare, so I could see replacing it to not bloat smaller cubes

This is a good question.. I must say, squirrel tribal does appeal to me
I feel that classic deranged still has a slight edge over this by having the option to be permanent rather than temporarily permanent, and goes to the yard sooner so that I can recur it faster. While this one gives you more turns for set up, I actually kind of like OG dying the following turn for my reanimation spells to immediately snag it up again. However, paying 5 and having enough power on board for the few turns it should take, you to kill an opponent is still worth strong consideration. However, I'm shopping around in the "is it overkill to just run both" department

I agree there a few decks/situations where deranged hermit will be better, overall I think this card is noteably better...
I'd be happy to play this in basically any fair deck as a threat by itself, whereas that's not always the case with deranged hermit.
Being able to push tempo the turn after you play this is a HUGE deal when you aren't immediately abusing the hermit going to the graveyard. For example, I'd be happy to turn 2 mana vault into this creature, whereas that's not even an option with deranged hermit.
Very rarely do boards stall for multiple turns after I cast a deranged hermit such that Echo > Vanishing 3. Generally games swing swiftly in one way or another after it's cast.
This card is awesome. Reminds me, I never did buy an Odyssey squirrel token for my cube when I acquired Deranged Hermit.
Look like Tribal is going to be a thing, so hopefully we get one or 2 more squirrel cards for cube
Overall this seems better than Deranged Hermit. I still want some hate in Acidic Slime and versatility in Verdirous Gearhulk, and splashability and blink payoff of Thragtush. So I may replace OG Hermit.
Side note: Good Planar Chaos art throwback to vanishing: the red thingy.

New cube achievement. Tooth & Nail for the Squirrel Lords!
My only question is do I want one or two copies of Deranged Hermit. The obvious cut in my list is Wolfir Silverheart, however that card has been performing fantastically well since the addition of a small fires package (Rhythm of the Wild,Surrak, the Huntcaller,Lightning Mauler, and Lightning Greaves). And I definitely don't have room for a 6th green five, and that doesn't even count Nissa!
Honestly, I don't think I want two Hermits. I get that it's an awesome creature and it's power/mana/bodies ratios are off the charts, but I like diversity, especially on higher costed cards that close out games. This will most likely be replacing good 'ol DH for me.
I think for me Acidic Slime gets the cut as I like my utility creatures at lower CC and as we have gotten Reclamation Sage and Manglehorn the need for this effect has gone down even if slime can get lands too. For me the best 5CC cards are battlecruisers or army makers unless they have some alternate casting mode ala Mulldrifter or Shriekmaw. Literally every 5cc monocolor creature card I run fits into one of these categories except perhaps Thragtusk or Glorybringer

A deck with one deranged hermit would probably want two. I have no problem helping a Cube deck become more consistent. They also work extremely well together and, to be honest, i just want to see someone beat down with eight 3/3 squirrels

Personally I’d cut Kalonian Hydra unless you have a +1/+1 counter theme going on, but even then I’d probably still cut Hydra.
