An uncommon that does a poor man's Siege Rhino impression. Considering how weak black 5 drops are, could this break into peasant or even unpowered cubes? A 5 mana 3/4 flyer is less exciting than a 4 mana 4/5 trampler but the colored cost is much less restrictive.
Sure, there is a chance of spending $4 on a booster and getting the Mythic Rare $30 super card. There is also a chance of surviving putting your tongue in a light socket.
Gray Merchant of Asphodel is a much stronger effect. While it has a weaker body, Gary having 2 power is very key for Reveillark / Recruiter / Alesha shenanigans.
Black 5 drops aren't amazing but there are still a wealth of cards that fall a bit short but still beat this. From my own cube I would place all mine solidly above this.
I would probably be comfortable running all those in a "low-power" environment. Vampire Sovreign seems like it would need a tribal cube to make it feel like it would be worth running, even then I would be eyeing up Anowon, the Ruin Sage.
Elsewhere, don't think so. I still have Grey Merchant in my unpowered cube and he's still secure for the moment; this would be the competition and I agree with Steveman when he says Merchant is preferable due to its wider range of interactions (also I find he usually drains for like 6+).
Vengeful Pharaoh, Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief, Gilt-Leaf Winnower are some other underrated black 5-drop creatures that I'd run over this. But hey... this card certainly isn't embarrassing, so if this fits a theme that you're trying to bolster in your cube, give it a try.
I understand running mediocre 1- and 2-drops for aggro curve considerations or mediocre role-players to facilitate combo/thematic archetypes, but there's no way you're improving your cube by adding bad cards to cater to goodstuff midrange.
