For a 720 cube you don't seem to have very many juicy Tinker targets (I would expect Inkwell Leviathan and Sphinx of the Steel Wind for sure at that size).
Thanks for that. They're on their way based on this feedback.
I'd take Jace here. Tinker and Demonic Tutor are close, but sometimes you don't get there with p1p1 Tinker, and Jace is a sure-thing that I know I'd play in any deck. If I were to cast DT, I can't imagine that I'd DT for anything better than Jace anyway.
JTMS is not a card I Tutor for much. Honestly I can’t recall anytime recently where I’ve tutored for it. If I’m tutoring for something, it’s usually one of the following:
- A mana source
- A threat / win condition / combo piece
- An answer to a threat (removal / sweeper)
JTMS kind of fits two of the categories, but it’s not the strongest win condition or removal spell. JTMS is a Swiss Army knife that grinds for good value, but those typically aren’t the cards I’m casting Demonic Tutor for.
Yeah unless I'm in some kind of weird scenario I never search for the value machines. Usually there's a 'need' in every moment and while Jace is great it's more just generically great in a very overpowered way and not filling a specific role, or at least one you want to tutor.
Snapcaster, Liliana and Confluence, in some order.
edit: Or, taking Zurgo and cutting off red aggro completely while passing my opponent's control cards seems like a great idea. I might not want to meddle with either black or blue given the depth of those colors in this pack.
I think I wuould pick Lily from this pack, but snap and confluence are good as well, but I think cutting black from the pack will push the person you are passing into blue.
Oh man, I really enjoyed reading through the last 19 pages.
Overall I realized that we spend 99% of our time discussing how to build the Cube, and there seems to be a great opportunity to discuss more Cube drafting strategy on this forum.
From reading this thread one consistent disagreement I have is that everyone seems to overvalue the signals they are passing. I personally used to do this a lot but improved my limited game when I started focusing on taking the best card for pick 1 and then trying to read the signals passed to me. 2/3 of your draft is what you are passed, so you are going to be in trouble if you’re overvaluing the signals you pass but are then getting passed the exact color that you stubbornly won’t go into because your picks 1-2 were flooded with a particular color. When this happens it usually means that the person you pass to builds the best deck at the table.
Example: I can’t fathom taking Zurgo over the Snapcaster in the last pack posted. I would take the best card in the pack and be flexible to shift depending on what I am passed. If you’re passed good blue and are able to play the Snap then the player to your left should still abandon blue even if they took a Mystic Confluence. PLUS you can never assume that the players in your pod have the same Cube pick order as you. Maybe Mystic Confluence makes it halfway around the table regardless and your neighbor never takes a blue card.
Liliana of the veil, it's a solid control breaker, and good in every version of black. I also like picking Griselbrand, but I don't know the consistency or strength of sultai or mardu reanimator in this cube
Primal Command. I don't think it's reasonable to expect Orochi Sustainer to wheel, but I think I could expect to get Revel of the Fallen God on the wheel and make a big Gruul deck. Signal Pest is tempting, but I wouldn't expect to wheel White knight, and nothing else encourages me to go aggro in this pack besides Signal Pest and White Knight.
Thanks for that. They're on their way based on this feedback.
