This is a card that similar to Thalia's Lancer's and Captain Sisay, became much more attractive with the new legendary permanent rule regarding planeswalkers. While previously this was essentially a low-tier three-mana colorless producing mana rock not even worth conversing about for the purposes of cube, it now has the potential to be so much more. If you have a planeswalker out before casting this, it is already better than a Worn Powerstone. If you have TWO planeswalkers out, then it is better than Thran Dynamo or Basalt Monolith (Wake Thrasher/Mana Reflection combos notwithstanding). And while yes, if you have two planeswalkers out you are likely doing pretty well already, but it's not a board state that is rare to stumble upon, so it's certain worth factoring in. In addition, the new legendary flip enchantments from Ixalan also (temporarily until you flip) provide even more synergies as there is no disincentive to tapping them. Thoughts?
Saw someone mention this interaction on reddit. Costing 3 is kinda brutal. Tapping for more than 1 mana is not. Question is, how reliable is the latter? Does anyone have experience with it with the new rules?
This might be decent now with the new rules assuming you’re running a good amount of walkers. The doesn’t stack up to Worn Powerstone / Coalition Relic / Basalt Monolith, but I like it more than Chromatic Lantern. Not sure if it beats out Cultivator’s Caravan as the #4 mana rock at the 3-cmc colorless slot.
I think Chromatic Lantern is kind of overrated. It's mean for decks that need fixing, but how much is it saving such decks? It seems more like an 'oops I don't have enough playables' card vs an actual playable, which doesn't seem necessary. For every Maze of Ith or Mutavault you fix, there's another scenario where Chromatic Lantern is pretty much just a manalith. Fine but I've cooled off on it considerably. I probably liked it more when it came out cause I was a worse player then and sometimes had awful mana bases lol
I think I'd have to see it in action before I can judge it. Including 'walkers was enough to push the number of legendary targets for Thalia's Lancers from too low to consistent enough to have 2-3 in the same deck. But needing those targets to be in play to get any kind of bonus is a little different story. It's solid enough with another 'walker or two out, but I can't see this replacing any of the good 3cc mana rocks (Coalition Relic/Worn Powerstone/Basalt Monolith). Perhaps in addition to? IDK. I'm not sure if I'm in the market for a 4th 3cc mana rock. But if I was, I'd test this one over Cultivator's Caravan or Chromatic Lantern, because I think tapping for more than 1 mana is the prime factor in determining whether or not it's worth spending 3 on a rock or not; and at least Honor-Worn Shakucan in some cases.
