Magus of the Crucible is an autoinclude for me. The art though.
I would imagine this being autokilled and acting like a Cartographer. Even then it's fine.
Wow this is so insane to see this card getting print! And having 2 power is almost an update for us. Can be tutor with Recruiter and bring back with Llark! That's so cool! Redundancy for Loam//Crucible has been wanted for years and we finally have it! That's simply great! We think it's a staple at any size above 360!
Super excited to see this, crucible has always been a card painfully out of my price range. It being a green creature feel a bit more fair and a better fit for the colour pie.
I wonder what the price on this will be? Seems like people will speculate pretty hard given the price of crucible.
I dislike the fact it is just a random snake guy. Since the effect is iconic (and redundant in multiples) I would have preferred if it was a legendary snake, but I think that about most creatures.
I imagine it will be pretty high and stay high. Not only are there already relevant interactions in standard (cycle lands) but it's the card every cube and green EDH deck is going to want.
Well, it's a draft weekend card, so I imagine it's going to be pretty cheap for the firs few months at least. Calling it, $3 at most while it's in standard.
I hope so, but I'd be pretty surprised. If they were pre-saleing at £3-4 I would grab a playset and sit on the rest. The fact it's named for a location in amonkhet means it won't see a reprint for a while and it feels like it will be a staple in afew formats.

Return of Core Sets means this can be reprinted much more easily now.
Over the long term I see this card settling below $5 once it rotates out of standard. While it'll be played a lot in cubes / EDH, those are singleton formats and this doesn't go in every green EDH decks. Don't look at Crucible of Worlds as a comparison since 5DN wasn't opened a lot, Crucible is played more in EDH due to being colorless, and is actually a 4 of in Legacy / Vintage decks.
A good comparison would be Eldritch Evolution, IMO. Super popular EDH card from a second set in today's era and it's currently less than $2.
How much of a precedence is there for Core Sets having cards from specific planes without them being special circumstances, like Origins or core sets in specific planes? Like, would we find Ramunap anythings on Dominaria? Without looking at the numbers, I feel like that's a bit of a stretch to expect that.

M15 had enemy pain lands and a lot of those have names referencing Dominaria. The set also references Innistrad a lot in the flavor text. Darksteel Citadel is also in the set.
I'd imagine that core sets will reference planes more in the future due to branding reasons. They also said in the announcements that they will be focusing on some backstory / history of characters in the new core sets. Maybe that means we'll get pre-Bolas Amonkhet gods???
Haven't they specifically said that the new "core sets" won't be like the old ones; they will be purposefully aimed at new players by including simple cards (playing lands from graveyards mightn't be what wizards call "simple") without nessicarily looking to print cards that "need" reprinted, and the sets will shift around planes but be tied to the story in some way.
I suppose with these new rules it depends how the story on amonkhet plays out, I guess we should be hoping ramunap comes out of this ok.

Crucible of Worlds was in tenth edition and is a very elegant card by itself. Also, Crucible / Excavator are much more simple than planeswalkers, which have become staples in core sets.

That's a pretty specific example from a core set that specifically broke what the aesthetic was. Im not saying it's impossible or that it won't happen, but it certainly doesn't lead me to believe it is much easier to reprint.

Phyrexian Revoker was also in that set!
I think M15 / Origins would be the closest references to what the new core sets will look like since they're the most recent examples.
That being said, is it just me or is every regular in the cube thread never going to reference this by its true name and always by Magus of
the Crucible?

Unless this is like an attributable quote to someone, I don't see that. I mean, they disbanded core sets as they weren't working, right? So why go back to how they were doing them last?

No quote, just speculation based off what we heard. It's a mix of old / new cards, which makes it very similar to M10-M15 right off the bat. My prediction is that this lets WotC do some storytelling with background stories and can let us touch some planes that we haven't been to for a while like Kamigawa / Lorwyn. The fact that there was minimal specific plane representation in previous core sets means that could be one of the big "changes."
I believe they discontinued core sets not because they weren't working, but because they wanted to try a new model that will make WotC / Hasbro more $$$$$. If you want to discuss this topic more with me, hit me up on Discord.
Anyways, I wouldn't be worried about the long term price of Magus of the Crucible in the long term. Eldritch Evolution is super cheap and is from a 2nd non-masterpiece set, that should be a good reference for Excavator.
I think Magus has a lot more casual appeal than Eldritch, but neither one of us are clearly experts in predicting the market so we'll see what happens when we get there
Origins was the first truly good core set. I hope the new core sets are just origins sets every time. I like that this guy is a 2/3, I feel like this would normally be a 2/2 which would be disappointing.

Seeing how Magus of the Will / Wheel were both 3/3s for 3 mana, I predicted Magus of the Crucible would be a 3/3 also. Much better than a 2/2 or a 3/2, at least 2 power gives it some synergies.
Also, M10-M15 had A LOT of great cube cards: Baneslayer Angel / Titans / Thundermaw Hellkite / Goblin Rabblemaster / Fauna Shaman, etc. Overall, the new changes means more new cards every year, which is a good thing for cube. I'll take a core set over a masters set any day.
I'm seriously considering running two copies of this card. I'm also thinking I'll betray my budget sensibilities and put my obscenely valuable Crucible back in. That will finally make this ability a real thing in my cube. Unique abilities deserve redundancy (Dark Ritual has earned its four copies in my cube). This would be the first time I've ever added a new card as a two-of, but I'm considering it. It depends on the value, really.
I do like this guy a lot for the incredible strip mine/wasteland plays, but I just can't actually see him replacing any of my 3 drops when considering the average value garnered from a green 3 drop. Could anyone help review my analysis?
Tireless Tracker: makes free permanents, draws cards, and becomes a decent threat.
Courser of Kruphix: I understand that with Excavator, if you recur the same fetchland every turn, you are basically getting nearly identical fixing value to Courser, plus a 100% guarantee you can recur the fetchland next turn. But Courser provides almost as good fixing, with the potential of finding your 3rd color, and with life GAIN instead of loss. Also 4 toughness. Plus, you just don't always have that fetchland early in a game, and then Excavator's fixing qualities disappear.
Den Protector: A card I'm quite fond of. I don't think I want to cut her just yet.
What are you all actually cutting for this? The excitement is so high, it sounds like you all would throw anything away for it, but until I playtest, I can't really see this bringing similarly high and consistent value compared to these options.

A bit niche/narrow, but it adds to the critical threshold to certain lands decks can make archetypes more playable than they were before..
And a solid good stuff card if you have strip mine/canopy/fetches.
I cut fastbond combo like a month ago (for like the 6th time)... but gonna have to revisit it.
