Has anybody ever tested this guy? He was a house back in DTK limited and I feel like he still has some pretty decent value almost like a black deranged hermit. getting 7/10 spread over 3 bodies for 5 mana and a creature, vs 9/9 spread over 5 bodies for 10 mana over 2 turns... I think it does a decent imitation. Obviously works great with gravecrawler, dread wanderer, and company.
I'm not saying he is a black deranged hermit, obviously, but thought the comparison might be helpful in evaluating. At least it's why I considered him in the first place and thought it might show my train of thought.
When comparing beside deranged hermit
+ easier mana cost
+ no echo cost
+ tokens are a more relevant creature type
+ 3/6 body can play defence or offence on its own
+ less competitive slot as black fives are fairly weak
- need a creature to get tokens unless you sac itself
- P/T spread over less tokens
- Cat Demon less relevant than Elf
I have had him in my cube for quite a while but since I moved I haven't gotten any real testing in with him because I lost my play group. I feel like kalitas, traitor of ghet fills a similar role providing a body along side zombie token synergy so rakshasa is on the chopping block for me right now even though he is a bit of a pet card.
Just wondering if anybody has feedback from how he plays before I say goodbye haha!
Gravecaller's floor is abysmally low when you can't exploit anything. His ETB trigger isn't very exploitable due to... exploit. I like From Under the Floorboards and Liliana's Mastery as 5-cmc token generators more than this.
It was on my shortlist for my recent overhaul which included an aristocrats package and I decided he was kinda sweet but too narrow. The P/T maths gets thrown by having to sacrifice something, which hopefully you'd be able to re-buy but that's not a given which means it's only +2 bodies not the +3 I'd like my 5 drop token generator to produce.
It was a fine pet card when I ran it in a peasant cube, but that was a format where most of the 2-4 CMC creature base was some variant of a Phyrexian Rager or Nekrataal, and Phyrexian Reclamation is a stronger card than Reanimate.
I can't imagine running it in an unrestricted list.
