I love how this thread is just consistently everyone saying there are no good includes, and of course then Wizards summarily reveals an instant staple at the last second.

Check out the thread for my cube if you have the time, and tell me how terrible it is.
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
No staples, IMO. Nothing even that great. Might test Ash Barrens and/or Frenzied Fugue, but I'm skeptical about both. Have been testing the Crawler a bit, and it seems lackluster so far. Not interested in Magus. Nothing else close other than those 4.
I think there are enough times where I'm disappointed with the Wilds/Expanse land coming into play tapped that if I were to only run two of that type of variant--i.e. fetch land with a draw back that gets any basic--that I would want to run Ash Barrens + one of them instead of both of them and no Ash Barrens. If I were to only run one I'm not entirely sure it would be Barrens, but having that fixing basic immediately when you can spare the mana is a real issue that I want to address and Ash Barrens does that.
It has some pros and cons in comparison to Wilds/Expanse, and ultimately the effect is pretty comparable. Which is to say that it's solid, albeit unexciting.
With a 450 card powered cube, I don't think there's a thing in this set I want. I like a few cards, but none seem good enough. If anything comes in, it will Ash Barrens.
Ash Barrens will be it for us as well. I'm honestly kind of relieved at how unexciting this release is for cube. The last few months have just been bam bam bam set after set. It's been almost a constant state of spoiler season and I've not yet even gotten proper testing in with the Shadows Over Innistrad cards.
Two days ago, I thought this set was pretty weak. The previous Commander sets have provided between 3 and 6 cards for my cube, but I was only mildly interested in Crawler. The final day gave me two more potential inclusions. I think none of them are slam-dunks, but those three cards look certainly good enough for making the cut.
One the worst set for cube we've seen in a long, long time. We're going to add Ash Barrens, but that's all. There's nothing even close to look like cube material other than that land and we're at 630... That says it all. The closest one is Magus of the Will, but we'd readd Yawgmoth's Will before adding the Magus, ao there's no need for it at the moment. Cubes supporting storm should be happy with it though.
Got to see Ash Barren's in action over the weekend. It had... pretty much the same impact as Wilds/Expanse but felt more techy and fun to play. I'm going to be keeping all 3 at 540.
Test Ash Barren. Not enough for 360. 0 include this set. I think this is the first set since I start making cube in 2010 that have 0 include. Even Gatecrash got Experiment One and Boros Charm.
Played against both Vial Smasher and Crawler in last weekend's draft, both were amazing.
Vial Smasher has huge damage potential and only needs to survive a turn or two before you're basically dead. The turn after my opponent dropped it he played Shriekmaw on me. So yeah, that hurt.
Crystalline Crawler was ramped out to be a 5/5 on turn 3. Forest + Birds + Swamp + Hierarch I believe? He didn't have a follow up to use the mana with, but honestly he didn't need it. I just couldn't keep up at that point. And if he did have a ramp target, it could have been anything in the cube with that kind of mana.
Haven't seen Ash Barrens in action yet, but no reason to think it will be anything other than great. Especially since we're still supporting colorless.
I had the crawler again last night and it lived up to the hype again for me. The ability to remove counters at instant speed for ANY COLOR is so good. Makes splashing double color spells more possible.
On a different note, has anyone tested Frenzied Fugue, and what are their results?
I've liked it as a Threaten+ type of card.
Something interesting came up last night where I had a Chandra, Flamecaller on 4 and a Sower of Temptation who lost her friend and the opponent had just cast a Primeval Titan, getting a Maze of Ith and some other hand.
I Fugue his Prime Time, attack with it and the sower, minus Chandra for 3 and finish off the Primeval Titan with a Lightning Bolt before he gets it back. If I had some way to contain the Primeval Titan when it went back, I likely would have let it live and bash the opponent for 6 (or would have stolen the Maze) again and again, but my board was unfortunately not able to really deal with Prime Time, so I had to kill it (and as my opponent was on ramp, I felt it was better to just take Prime Titan and kill it rather than just steal the Maze.)
There've been other times when it stole a PW (a few weeks ago, it stole an Elspeth, Sun's Champion which created an... odd tug-of-war situation, but one that was advantageous to me.) Overall, I've liked it though. Tons of flexibility.

But it's interesting
Thanks! Also--always good seeing you post around here!
Is there a certain size cube where you would be surprised/disappointed at it's lack of inclusion, or is it a purely preferential card?
