I was reading the dungeons of the "This or That" thread, and I realized that people have widely varying opinions on this card. I haven't run it in years, but I am reconsidering adding. What are people's experiences with this card? It seems like a nightmare to play against because it has some of the most undercosted stats in the game, and when you are facing it you have to either deal with the massive threat or cross your fingers that your opponent has nothing for it after it destroys you.
The level of success this guy has is pretty dependent on your cube's level of sacrifice effects and removal that can target him. The easier you're able to get rid of him once his job is done, the better he'll be. If you're lacking in that department, he's going to be a dead card.
Personally, I love the card, because it's the kind of thing I think black should do, which is big undercosted fatties that have a drawback.
I like Abyssal Persecutor a lot, but not more than Braids / Nekrataal / Skinrender / Kalitas. I actually play him in all sorts of decks from aggro / midrange / control / cheaty face combo decks. He's a good curve topper in aggro, good general stat monster in midrange, and hard castable in combo decks while still not embarrassing to cheat out via Oath of Druids / Eureka. Most decks can remove him via Edicts / Terror effects / Sweepers, but I feel my opponent is the one that removes him most of the time.
Outside of my top four 4-drops in black, I like Persecutor over the other options like Sewer Nemesis / Desecration Demon.
Never liked it. Rather just use a different 4-drop that doesn't say "you can't win the game" on it. Lost too many times to countermagic or simply being unable to remove it. It's super fun/flavorful, but it was never good for us.
I think it's a cool design. And the drawback is negligible for most black decks. I've had to cut it for power reasons but would be running it otherwise.
I love this card. Black had so many ways to get rid of this guy and players know it. This knowledge forces your opponent to immediately remove him or try to protect him. The latter being a losing situation most of the time. And remember, for your opponent to win the game they will ultimately need to get through the 6/6 flying trample without it dying. He's a power house card but every so often you will pay for your greed (I think I saw it once). Very black
I love the subgame it creates. It's pretty rare outside of this card to see your opponent try to counter your Go For the Throat when it targets your own creature!
