I got the promo as a "tribute to a new cube". So much time had passed, and I still have the same promo in my cube! By being textless, it thought us young cubers to remember the text fully, and that's awesome.
The card is the definition of 2 for 1, and I can't imagine a cube without it.
Favorite tapper - Vectis Dominator (I love the design and the art)
Favorite counterspell - Force of Will (Also, my most expensive card I own, a foil Eternal Masters fresh from the pack)
Bonkers good card. My #1 trade regret is turning down a guy at the Zendikar pre-release who was offering me a playset of textless Cryptics for the Arid Mesa and Misty Rainforest I'd pulled at the event. I said no, as I was worried about remembering what they actually did. Should've thought I'd one day be able to trade them for normal copies if I'd wanted! Still, would've been hard to predict where all these prices would've ended up a decade on.
Fave bouncer: Capsize. Why do it once when I can do it forever?
Fave counter: Counterspell. Because it feels good to leave two blue untapped like the old times, and I'm too poor to own a Mana Drain.
It's the most wonderful time of the year.... That's right, the MTGO Vintage Cube (fka Holiday Cube) is back for a limited time only! While it's online, we'll be looking more specifically at some the choices are unique enough to that cube that to not make the cut in Cubetutor 720 average.
Obviously too narrow for normal cubes. I think even in combo cubes this will not see play because it is too good of a hoser for the decks that you want to support. In said cubes this would be too binary and I could see mulliganing into it as a valid strategy in some matchups which does not promote clever or interactive cube play.
Surprisingly better online because of how many people try and go for storm combo, but even then it only really feels good there. I've sided it in against red aggro decks too, to mixed results. I would never run leyline, and while I understand it's application it still seems like a stretch.
I like MTGO and the MODO cube a lot. Sure, there are some terrible card choices and it's not ideal, but it keeps me playing cube (and magic) and it's really easy to sit down and get a few matches in.
This is especially so with leagues, which has its cons with cube but is mostly pros. It really changes how you look at cube because it's this weird non-singleton singleton format--there's almost no point where you can conclusively count out a card because it's in your pool, and the more your deck can handle multiple match ups the better. There is almost no benefit to hate drafting, which to me is a massive pro both in drafting and in overall improving of draft mechanics, and the better your sideboard the better you match up vs the extensive field. Matches start at your convenience, are easy and quick to join, and you can crank through games.
If you don't have hours to sit through a draft but still want to cube, I think the MODO Vitnage Cube leagues are an amazing alternative.
I've never run this card, and I don't think I ever would, because it's such a narrow sideboard-only card. Sure, Leyline of Sanctity shuts down Storm decks, but it seems like there are so many better ways of disrupting Storm combo with cards that will be effective against other kinds of decks like artifact removal, mana disruption, and hand disruption. This just shouldn't ever be a high pick for anyone drafting any cube, which makes it a lousy choice from a design perspective. If this kind of effect were actually necessary, I'd rather have it in "hate bear" form like Aegis of the Gods, so at least you're advancing a beatdown strategy somewhat by playing it.
At least the art's nice. Ryan Pancoast sure knows hisflowers.
I've yet to play the MTGO cubes, but I do watch the Channel Fireball pros' draft videos to learn how to get better at retail drafting. It's always a treat to watch their videos of the MTGO cubes, and to see how the pros approach cube draft.
As a general value 5 drop this is fair, but a 4/4 body at that turn is unexciting, and green has many better five drops that win games. As a Naturalize-on-a-stick variant this just costs too much compared most of the cards you will want to destroy. You do not want to wait until turn 4 or 5 to kill that Sol Ring.
I like them (and I liked Indrik Stomphowler before them), but I'm not currently running them, since I had enough green 5-drops already and there are enough other Naturalize-effects available in my cube.
Conclave Naturalists is a fine card, but just isn't needed for most small to medium sized cubes. Honestly, I'm not even running it in my low power list anymore. It's great in peasant cubes, though.
My favorite full art has to go to Clint Cearly's Reclamation Sage. Just gorgeous.
Hey remember that time we were talking about how we weren't in love with the art for this card and Howard Lyon actually came to the forums to talk about it?
That was hilarious. We get pretty passionate in our discussions about MTG art, I can't help but wonder how many other artists have seen what we've had to say about their work.
I don't think my cube would have to be much larger before I wanted to include Conclave Naturalists, and I'm more surprised that it's not in CT Average 720 than in the MTGO cubes. It's not quite as good as Wickerbough Elder, which can come down and attack a turn sooner, but the design is much cleaner on Naturalists. I wouldn't blame anyone for running this card in addition to, or instead of Wickerbough Elder.
My favorite extended art is the gruesome Diregraf Ghoul.

I haven't put it in yet, but I have one waiting to rotate in if I feel like making a change. Slightly different role than the Acidic Slime, as it's more beater with a narrower target range, but it's still not a bad card. I'd definitely consider it a step down from Slime.
Howard handled that situation very well and I loved that he returned to share more as the promo came out. I have nothing but respect for the guy after that interaction. I still think it was a certain poster ratting the thread out at the time because we called him on his inarticulate art opinions.
I'm not really a fan of the wheel on a stick because it's slow. He's not bad for EDH, but cube... eh. Nekusaar and Niv Mizzet love guys like him and whirlpool warrior.
I love the Magi cycle but Wheel Man Thad really has timing. I'm still running it at 540 just because my friends really like wheel effects, but he's definitely at the front of the line for the chopping block.
I want to see Magus of the (Recurring) Nightmare. It'd be slow and probably wouldn't crack my cube, I just think the name sounds cool and I bet the artwork would be awesome.
I love Magus of the Wheel in EDH, and have played it in cube, but it's a turn too slow, I think.
Would love to see:

I run Magus at 540. He's fine, not great, but I do like having another Wheel effect.
Rant's suggestion of Magus of the Port is very good. Considering my deep and abiding love for Opposition, I would love to see a Magus of that.
If it came out, my Magus of the Opposition would immediately get altered to Bernie Sanders.
